im no mathematician, but ... we have 7 players off contract this year and youd expect their replacements to at least get a 2 year contract. Contracted players for years 2021 and above equal 6 (Crighton, Napa, Okunbor, Meaney, CHN and Ogden)... so thats 13 confirmed squad members for the start of the 2021 season.. so 23 spots and 8.5 cannot be accurate in the slightest.. unless he means including the recruitment at the end of this season as well ??
I think of it as there being 23 contract spots available for 2021 (which is not the same as in 2021). We can fill some of them this year, some next year and some in 2021. For example we could sign a contract this November for someone to play with us in 2021, so he's not included in the 2020 salary cap or contract numbers.

Yeah because the club is really going to tell you or any other Joe blow the amount of cap space they have, if any
I was there. So was the FG team. Fewer Members than expected. Questions were allowed from the floor. I spoke to Andrew Hill at the end - believe this or not at your own discretion but this is straight from the CEO: 2020 we have 7 spots open out of 30. He wouldn’t say how much cap space, but said we have ‘more than enough to be competitive’ in signing those players. They reckon 2-3 established first graders, 1-2 fringe and 1-2 of our juniors to come into the 2020 squad. 2021 is the big story. Only 7 spots signed out of 30, so 23 signings to come (yes, some will likely be retentions and others some juniors but a good number not currently with the club - with a budget of ~$8.5m. So hopefully 2020 improves and 2021 is when we rise again.
Seems that I'm not the only Joe Blow that gets told "the amount of cap space they have".

We also have 4 ex bulldogs players in origin. So fair enough you release them. But why are we still coming last..... I need that explained to me now.

Better off just playing for no points then shedding 15-20 nrl standard players for Meaney, crighton, cogger etc.

You’d think ok you make the tough choice. Remove players on heavy contracts. And you get either young up and comers or atleast 1st grade standard players.....

Noooooo. We get reserve graders instead :p

Great heart from the team to compete most weeks. But to be honest fans don’t show up for heart shown. It’s about results which arguably since 2014 we haven’t had. That’s 5 years now. And song think Anderson’s and co will miraculously fix everything by next year or the year after.
You do realise we ha e a top 30 yeah??? This means that 13 players from our top squad are actually what you are referring to as "reserve graders". This is 43% of our squad. So yes, it is necessary to sign reserve graders. Some come good, and others dont. That's life.

We need Greenberg back at the helm. He is the only person that can set our people free and take us to the Holy land for the ultimate prize.

Because they can't play effectively for more than 50 minutes (your numbers, ie; 80 - 30 = 50).
CHN has played 80min before. Has certainly played 65-70min

Because the reserve is no better than the guys on the field plus if someone gets injured we play the last 7 mins (again your numbers) with 12 men. Then you would be bitching over being undermanned. I suggest you check other teams' replacement timing, ours is far from unusual.
Using the 8th interchange in the 73rd minute, fine. Having one of your four interchange players sitting on the bench for a full 73min before using them, madness. If they aren't good enough to contribute more than 7min, they're not good enough to play at all. If your hooker can play 73min, they can play 80min

That's the players on the field doing it, not the coach up in the box. Plainly they aren't following the coaching team's instructions, evidence by the fact that some (many) have been dropped.
I wasn't intending to just blame Pay for onfield errors, players have plenty of fault here. But, its the coaches job to get these stoopid errors out of their game.

I don’t think it’s about affordability, it’s about responsibility. I’ve been on a board before (nothing to do with sport) and it’s the directors duties to run the business responsibility. I don’t know of any director that would authorise a $50k spend just to get something off their chest (even collectively). How do you explain that to shareholders who ultimately front the money? Don’t get me wrong - as a fan it riles me as much as anyone else, but with my business hat on, it’s hard for me to disagree with their stance.
Throwing money away is dumb business. The people who run the business aren’t dumb. They have better things to spend the money on.

MEMBERS FORUM REVIEW
Dear Members,

After our Members Forum last night at the Canterbury League Club I thought it was important to summarise what was spoken about, as well as acknowledging your passionate and loyal support of the Bulldogs.

With this round of the NRL being Members Appreciation Round, it seems appropriate to pay enormous credit to you the Bulldogs Members, as the most important part of our club.

The past week has seen many great moments that started with the tremendous turn out at Belmore for our match with the Storm. That day highlighted everything that is great about the Bulldogs, with the unveiling of the Steve Folkes High Performance Centre in honour of one of our greatest ever. In attendance at the unveiling ceremony were members of both our 1980 and 2004 Premiership winning sides, who later did a lap of the ground before kick off. At half time we were treated to an incredible dance spectacular that featured over 1500 local children, and created an amazing display for the crowd.

After the match all of our NRL team came back to the Canterbury League Club to meet our Members and we heard from both past and present players on stage.

That was followed with our Members Forum last night where the whole Top 30 playing and coaching squad took time out to show their appreciation to our Members for their support and to be part of a great evening.

During the evening I updated the Members on a number of key matters, including the season structure for 2020, stadia redevelopment progress, the playing roster for next year, and the work that the club is doing to protect our brand in regard to negative references to the Bulldogs in media reports for non-football related articles. This was followed by Chair Lynne Anderson joining me on stage for a Q&A, as part of a ‘questions from the floor’ segment, leading into a discussion with Charbel Khoury and Joe Saukuru about the outstanding seasons that had been enjoyed by both the Harold Matthews and SG Ball sides.

We then moved into an NRL discussion with Head Coach Dean Pay and Club Captain Josh Jackson, in addition to a special interview with rising star and local junior, Jayden Okunbor, about his journey from local junior club to the NRL.

The evening ended with special guest Terry Lamb looking back on his great career with some fun stories, before Lynne Anderson closed the night with a special thank you to all Members from the Board.

We are always grateful for our Members support. Our club is proud and passionate. We all want results that are eluding us so far, but we are at our best when we dig deep together. All of us at the Club: Board, Management, Coaching and Playing staff, are working hard to continually improve and thank you for your continued support.

We hope that the evening proved enjoyable for those that attended and we look forward to releasing details of our next Members Forum in due course.

Once again a big thank you to all Members for your continued support of our great club and we look forward to seeing you all at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night for our vital clash with the Raiders (7-35pm Kick-off).

That's all well and good highlighting the lap of honor before kick off as well as the half time entertainment featuring 1500 dancing local kids, shame the actual game was a woeful spectacle by our FG side due to our genius coach's "tactical nous" to not put any pressure on the storm and gift them possession

Hi Wendog - did you see the bit about 2021 with 23 spots to fill and $8.5m to spend? I get the feeling that’s the focus - there will be some big announcements next year. In the meantime, we have to see out his dismal time with a largely inexperienced squad and coach and reduced dollars to fix the problem - all of which everyone well and truly knows.
Thanks for replying...alleviated some concerns about our "direction" or lack of.

Seems those who attended were satisfied with the answers and outlook presented ...working towards progress and syccess. It probably had tones of the usual snow job fans get fed :grinning: but I guess that's all we can hope for.

We all realise the problems they are working with but Pay has to have improved coaching help and accountability ...can't whitewash that IMO.
