Below is the actual press release from Sharks (yes they included a betting partner link in the press release).

This stuff is a stain on our game (like alcohol and cigarette advertising). Both of them were banned and they need to ban all betting advertising as well.

Maybe then the game will see some genuine big name sponsors enter the fray.

Sick of watching the game and having betting shit crammed down ones throat.

The Sharks are pleased to announce a new stadium naming rights partnership with PointsBet, Australia’s fastest growing online bookmaker.

PointsBet is both Australian owned and founded and is successfully taking on the large international players that have dominated the Australian online betting market in recent times.

The deal will see PointsBet Stadium as the new home of the Sharks for the next four seasons, complimented by the PointsBet logo on the sternum of the Sharks jersey. The newly pressed jersey made an appearance for the first-time in their round three win over the Cowboys.

Sharks General Manager of Commercial Chris Highett was thrilled an innovative and modern Australian owned company such as PointsBet would be joining the Sharks corporate family.

“PointsBet is setting new standards in the sports betting industry in Australia and around the world and we’re excited they have shown great faith in our club by partnering up with the Sharks on this long-term arrangement,” Highett said.

“Starting with our round five game against the Roosters, the Sharks will be playing out of PointsBet Stadium and we look forward to a long and positive relationship with the team at PointsBet.”

PointsBet co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer Andrew Fahey said; “We are thrilled to be entering a long-term partnership with the Cronulla Sharks.

“They have ambitious plans both on and off the field and we look forward to being part of their success. There is nothing better than watching footy at a traditional suburban ground like at Cronulla and you won’t find a more loyal, passionate supporter base than Sharks fans.

“The announcement of PointsBet Stadium is something we are very proud of.”

In January this year PointsBet launched in the recently legalised USA sports betting market and is already making a significant impact.

With its in-house technology powering new bet types, expansive player props, exotic markets, early payouts and best-in-market pricing on key events, the PointsBet Sportsbook iOS (Apple) App is already ranked in third place amongst bookmakers nationwide in the USA, ahead of multi-billion-dollar brands like William Hill, MGM and Caesars.

PointsBet Australia continues to develop in tandem with its U.S. enterprise with the synergies across the two jurisdictions driving common growth.

The Australian operation has experienced significant increases in customer acquisition, turnover and revenue in the past 12 months, implementing similar growth strategies to the U.S. business.

PointsBet utilises NBA legend Allen Iverson, as well as local footy personalities Brett Finch and Billy Brownless as brand ambassadors. PointsBet Australia is building national brand awareness, via a growing marketing spend that draws customers to its ultracompetitive products.

For more information on how to open a PointsBet account to take advantage of PointsBet’s 4 up at Half-time, you win NRL early payout, go to the website at www.pointsbet.com.au

I really can't see how these betting companies being so heavily involved in our sport isn't a massive conflict of interest!

To think that every bookmaker has an official vested interested and there being absolutely no funny business going on would be extremely naive.

This is so true. I still remember the bs when they used to have Tom Waterhouse as a commentator spruiking his betting company. I don’t like how prominent betting is in rugby league and parents should have the choice to keep their kids away from that without it being part of the broadcast

If you think this is bad - look up the major jersey sponsor of teams in the EPL (generally the scrub teams) and the Championship (2nd division).

9/20 EPL teams

17/24 Championship teams

Agreed - it is a stain on the game. But it generates cash.

ESL teams are pretty heavily sponsored by betting cos too. Sports betting is pretty big in the UK.

Fantastic; another club hops into bed with a betting agency......oh well I guess the NRL has so it is no surprise. Just seems wrong that the game itself and so many clubs are associated with the betting agencies....just another avenue for them to suck in people

These betting companies have fully integrated themself into sport and are laughing. The Executives of sporting organisations world wide have been made a mockery of and I don’t even know if they have realised it yet

Wish we could adopt NZ's laws.... Sometimes I second guess why I still invest time into the game when you see the teams running out with betting agency branded attire, into betting agency titled arenas, on a betting agency sponsored telecast, etc

As others have said, its not just the NRL but this is a huge issue worldwide...

The negative impact all of these betting ads and sponsorships would be having on people would be massive.

It would be nice if the governing bodies could have some sort of values and respect for the wellbeing of their fans but money is more important and they don't care what the ramifications are.

But I agree Mr.I, if cigarettes can be banned in advertising, then beer and betting ads/sponsorship should be too.

Hang on, are we banning booze outright, or just from sponsoring/advertising in sport?
