Des Hasler may have reached use-by date at Canterbury, say former Bulldogs

A trio of Canterbury premiership winners have spoken of their concerns about the direction the Bulldogs are heading in following a 36-0 thrashing by Manly, indicating Des Hasler has reached his use-by date at Belmore.

Hasler's future at the club is hanging in the balance after the Lottoland rout and it appears he will need a remarkable turnaround from his team against Brisbane on Thursday night and in coming weeks to keep his job beyond this season.

"All I'll say is it was very difficult sitting there watching and taking it seriously," said Paul Dunn, the 1988 Clive Churchill medallist and former Bulldogs board member.

"They've lost seven out of their last eight games now. It doesn't look like anything is changing. It's going to be a long year."

Premiership-winning captain Peter Tunks believes the clash against the Broncos at ANZ Stadium in round five now shapes as the "biggest match for the club for a long time".

"Des has been there a long time," Tunks said. "He'd have to understand there comes a time when a coach has been somewhere for long enough and what he's telling them is maybe going in one ear and out the other.

"They talk about losing the dressing room. Well, there was a lot of effort put in [on Saturday] but there was something missing. I haven't seen that from a Canterbury team for a long, long time.

"There is a sell-by date for everybody. It didn't look like the players are in on what Des is trying to get them to do. When you have a result like [on Saturday] it's not a good sign. Des has made the semis every year [since he arrived at Canterbury in 2012] and two grand finals. But they've had one win this year and in round four to get beaten 36-0 by a team that had only won one game before then you've got to be pretty concerned."

Fairfax Media was told last week that the finalisation of Hasler's two-year contract extension would hinge on performances over the proceeding eight rounds, including the visit to Manly, with the end point of that period constituting nearly the halfway point of the season.

The Bulldogs are adamant there is no set time frame but what is increasingly evident is that Hasler can ill afford another Manly-like beating on Thursday night. Canterbury is a club renowned for setting high standards and despite Hasler's rich record of reaching the top eight and beyond what was on display on the northern beaches was wildly out of character with Bulldogs sides of the past.

"It looks on the surface that there is a fair amount of passion missing," grand final-winning second-rower Graeme Hughes said. "Unless they can find something it's almost time for all parties to move on."

Every man and his dog can see it, and have been saying it for some time.

Poor old Baa Baa called it early last year and was gagged, Turvey brought it to a head and got punted...wtf??!!

Even the fact they are CONSIDERING extending Hasler is verging on on negligent by management and the board.

Made 2 GFs in which we scored 2 tries combined!

His KPI is to make the top 4 each year, and we've failed for the past 4 straight. (Sure in 14 we fluked it to the GF when Penrith knocked off the top seeded Roosters and the finals draw opened up for us...)

Enough is enough.

Fuck off Des!

For some reason i have not lost all my faith in the club and believe Hasler is definitely gone...it is a matter of getting a replacement coach now.
I reckon Hasler knows it as well and wants to be punted for the golden payout.
He is a germ and toxic to the club.

This is exactly what we need. Club legends publicly holding Des' feet to the fire. Mortimer, Lamb, Dunn, Tunks, Hughes...many more from that generation would want Des gone.
Think Langmack said a few things last year too.

I think you'll find the lack of coach change comes from lack of availability of skilled coaches in the market.

Club are unlikely to go with an untested rookie and get crucified when it fails.

Club will also want someone who hasn't been sacked before.

That leaves the big hitters, who would take a lot of money to get over (Bellamy Bennett, Robinson, Stuart).

If Souths don't perform you could even say Macguire might be under pressure.

That's the issue IMHO.

Des has no one else to blame but himself tbh. He tried to change the way nrl was played and it ultimately failed.

Matty johns said it was our lack of cattle, and that any other coach in the hot seat would have produced the same garbage. Then said that there were no good halves on the market.

Truth is, sezer wanted to come back and we said no. Maloney was on the market and Des apparently didn't rate him. Munster (fullback) didn't get his phone call returned. We passed on latrell. Instead we continued to load up on fucking forwards. This all on Des. We fucked up foran, thanks to hero dib. Yep foran is a decisive figure on here, but at full fitness the kid shits all over Reynolds. No one can deny that.

This place needs a fucking flamethrower applied to it to clean out the virus that has infected the place. Fuck off dib, fuck off rae Rae, and maybe keep Des cause no one else on the market is better. Des can be kept if we have a Gm of football and someone to say "hey what the fuck, that's stupid, go back and do it again".

It's mind boggling how people like Mat Johns let Des off the hook because he "doesn't have the cattle"

He took this team over 5 years ago and there's no player in our roster that he hasn't either re-signed or signed so its not like he has inherited a group of players that he didn't want.

When he came here from Manly he wanted complete control of anything to do with the football program and he got it.

Any player with flair or natural attacking instincts such as Cook have been let go in preference to plodders like Lichaa or Garvey.

He has left our salary cap crippled with the majority of the money being invested in a ageing and immobile forward pack and completely neglected the spin which in today's game is vital to any success.

It's ironic that Des's best season (2012) was with a squad of players that he inherited form Kevin Moore.

Yes, he doesn't have the cattle and it's all his fault.

Des was given all the power. retention, recruitment, cheque books, staff and all his toys.

the majority of public were and are of the opinion that the coach deals with the footy side of things and the CEO deals with the business side of the club.

des was given everything he requested (except a extension for Williams) and now the board and CEO are at fault for Des Hasler's results.

Get the fuck outta here

The board and CEO ARE AT FAULT!!!

They should have seen alarm bells ringing in 2013 and 2015, and they FAILED to act, they gave him an extra year (2016) of complete control.

They're all to blame.

2013 a year after the GF appearance? You serious?

The downward spiral started after Hasler got rid of Ennis.

Hasler MUST go first.

Only 3 years to figure out the players don't respond to him
Wow it took only 3 years hahaha

If it took 4 years and counting to find a fullback how long do you reckon until they find a proper coach
