Sam Perrett has declared he wants to make Canterbury's contentious fullback spot his long-term position despite no assurances from coach Des Hasler that it will be.
Ben Barba's off season move to Brisbane has left a huge hole at the back for the Bulldogs and Perrett put in an unconvincing display in Canterbury's round one NRL loss to the Broncos.
Bulldogs chief executive Raelene Castle has said publicly the club is still searching for a star replacement to fill Barba's old No.1 jersey and Bronco Josh Hoffman continues to be linked to Belmore.
But Kiwi international Perrett says he is the man for the job.
"I was pretty happy with how I went at the back against Brisbane but I know I still have a long way to go," Perrett said on Thursday.
"I haven't been back there for a while so I was a little bit rusty.
"As I get a bit more of a feel for it and a bit more time there hopefully I can do a better job for the boys.
"I only found out at the start of last week that I would be playing there.
"Nothing is set in stone.
"I would love to stay there for the year. I love playing fullback.
"I'm just going to take every opportunity I can and see if I can get better and better at it.
"Des has given me no heads up as to whether it is going to be my position.
"I know that there are a lot of good young players here that have played fullback as well.
"We have some good depth at the club, i just have to do my best job and hope I can improve as much as I can."
Canterbury's attack was ineffective at times without Barba but representative playmaker Josh Reynolds said he doesn't feel under any added pressure with the former Dally M medalist gone, ahead of Monday's round two clash against Cronulla.
"That is definitely the indication that everyone seems to get that I have been asked to do more but the boys are really going to share the load," Reynolds said.
"I know that for a fact the load is just not on my shoulders to come up with things all the time.
"We have forwards that are like backs that can come up with things like those little half breaks.
"It's up to myself to be there when the boys need me but there is no extra pressure that's for sure.
"No one has come up and said you have to step into those shoes.
"I know for a fact I just have to do my job and that is what I am focusing on."
