So he is going to be on a extended bench list without playing a NSW Cup game all year
:tearsofjoy: No! the Nsw cup game isnt until 3pm on Sunday so im assuming he will just travel with the team.
It will be good for Karl to just be around the team on game day to get him ready.

They roam in comparison to Burton. Burton plays down the same narrow corridor all game that there's barely even room to have a fullback sweeping behind him, even if there is he fucks up the pass anyway. A lot for other 5/8's don't just do this. Look at Munster, he will get in at first receiver to the right of the ruck when the balls on his side and then either linkup up with Hughes or go on one of his typical marauding runs. Burton just doesn't do this.
It's a continual problem for Burton.. That he is limited to the narrowest channel on the left that leaves no margin for error or room to create as the sideline acts as an extra defender..

Burton needs to address this himself. But also what are the coaches doing to move him more infield, and to get him playing both sides more often? Surely they see this and can address it? Burton needs to take ownership, no doubt, but what are the coaches doing to rectify it?

Yeah nah, this is bullshit. Burton’s problem isn’t his lack of “roaming”, it’s simply decision making and working with his outside men. Once he gets used to working with Kiks and Alamoti, he should do much better. People say he played with Kikau before, but he was outside him then, not inside. Big difference and now he’s tasked with setting up everything on that edge. Apparently his preseason was limited because of WC and injury, so he probably hasn’t had enough reps with those guys, and very little in actual games. Once they work out their timing etc. they should be far more effective.

Also, I haven’t seen it mentioned but I noticed late in the round 1 match Burton was quickly switching from left of the ruck to the right. It looked a bit weird really, but he was trying to open up the right side I suppose.

A 5/8th can play down one side and still be effective. It’s all to do with how they link with their inside and outside men. Reality is that when you’re not making many linebreaks, they don’t get the opportunity to do much. He needs more from the forwards, quicker ptb’s etc to really make an impact.

Mason basically said we didn't follow the game plan so that could be it. I noticed in the first few minutes Burton was getting his hands on the ball a bit more and looking to do more with it but after he fucked up a pass for Kikau he just reverted to his usual self.

It's meh. I tried to listen to the whole thing but gave up and just went back to it when our match review was timestamped.

What Burton needs to do is set down with Ciro and honestly tell him how and where he wants to play.
What he was trying to do in the first round he didn't seem to be ready for, he needs a creative halfback.
Unfortunately Flanagan looks reasonable when everything is going good.

No, precisely the opposite.
CIRALDO needs to sit down with Burton and tell him how and where he wants him to play.
Burton is talented enough to be able to implement what Ciraldo wants.
And whatever that style is, it must unlock the talent around him - he cannot just play a style that he finds "comfortable", it needs to benefit the team and (positively) influence results.
After that, he needs to practice it, live and breathe it, become an expert in the execution of it, and finally live up to the promise he is being paid on.

Natural instincts aren't just words...
Burton is a natural running 5/8 with an amazing long kicking game, placing him under pressure to play as an organising half especially know will fail miserably and his game against Manly is a fine example...
JMK who we bought as a half turned him into a hooker and even when he performed well he still failed as a hooker !
Successful coaches work with and enhance the natural abilities of a player !

Maybe Ciro needed a game to work out things in the flesh, I think Burton will have more of a license to thrill.
