I would add to that, the general sporting media in Melbourne that dares to give any coverage to NRL (or Soccer) gets ostracised by the AFL. Any negative media coverage is heavily frowned upon by the AFL. They cut them off, they cancel their AFL media accreditation, they are removed from any invited media lists and the AFL contacts their managing editors and informs them that they are persona non grata. Schools are similar, any that even consider playing league get no AFL support, no player visits, no guest coaching, no funding, are cut off completely. Similar treatment for councils that consider building square football grounds or heaven forbid put up non AFL goal posts. They have a legal team with part of their responsibility to challenge any attempts to build, buy or convert facilities that in any way advantage league or soccer. They fought the construction of AAMI Park for 6 years using every legal tactic available.I lived in Melbourne and country Victoria for 15 years

There is no interest for league.
State of origin games as soon as the final whistle was blown, that was the end of the coverage.
Everyone I worked with winged cause why the fuck do they have to put up with that shit rugby league 8pm on a Wednesday night on their TV. Im talking SOO, so called pinacle of NRL. They simply don't want any of it.
I remember living country VIC Id have to stay up late till after the AFL games were done to watch the delayed NRL matches on free to air.
Kids don't play league in the parks. Newspapers rarely have NRL content. The media aren't interested because why would they be, there is simply no demand.
People just aren't interested, mostly they hate the sport.
The AFL are ruthless in protecting their turf, they will and do take action against anyone who threatens their monopoly.
