Updated OP due to Okunbor re-signing, we now have 22 players signed for 2022.
This was pretty inevitable really, he is a local junior, has a bit of X factor about him, young still got potential. He will be on not much, he is of course on notice because of the stuff just before 2020 season kicked off.
Interesting to see that within days of Gus being signed, two local junior depth options have been signed. We are now at 22 for next years squad. Part of the effect of reducing the number of spots available is it can create a bit of FOMO for players looking for a contract, hoping to be re-signed, or who we have approached as being interested in. Some players might crack under the pressure, some might turn their form around, and others might accept an offer that is on the table when they had previously been thinking they could get more.
I'd not be surprised to see 3 or 4 more signings in the next few weeks, even if they are just depth signings. The message is clear, we are actively finalising our 2022 squad, so it makes sense to get over the line with the players we are probably going to keep for the time being anyway. If we don't have a player we are pursuing for a squad spot that is realistic and active, then re-sign a depth option on minimum or close to minimum, preferably local junior.
No doubt the club will keep 1 or 2 spots open as long as it can. But for those out there who are attracted to the thought of playing alongside Burton, JAC, Cotric, Thompson, etc, next season, in an organisation that includes Gus Gould and Steve Hansen, better start making up your mind.
