Yet again there is a lot of angst over referees blowing their whistles and whether or not a team gets a fair opportunity to win the game on merit. In other words many games winning or losing is at the discretion of the referees. Why is this so? And what changes to the rules can help bring the result back to the playing contest. I open this to the brains trust.

To start off, my biggest gripe is the wrestling instead of tackling that has come into the game. It is no longer in the interest of the defending team to put the ball carrier to ground quickly. A good one person tackle around the legs bringing the ball carrier to ground results in not enough time for the tackler’s team mates to retreat the now required 10 metres. The ball player can get to his feet to play the ball and the defenders are now all offside. A penalty invariably results. Unfairly in my view because the good defensive tackling technique is not rewarded. Hence the object now is to keep the ball carrier off the ground by wrestling techniques involving multiple defenders. And to make matters worse, as so often happens, the tackled player proceeds to take two or 3 steps forward before playing the ball.

So my idea is to change the rules to give a reward for a good around the legs tackle. If a ball carrier is tackled by one person and below the waist, the defending players only need to retreat 5 metres instead of 10.

I look forward to other suggested rule changes which I will then compile and send to the club, the media and the NRL.

Get rid of the 7 tackle set if you kick the ball goes dead. It is way to big of a punishment for something as simple as over hitting a grubber.

The whole momentum in games swings on it sometimes.

7th tackle restart. I hate that rule and should be amended to kicks from outside the 40m.
Far too often it changes the momentum of a game by piggy backing a team up the field when a field goal is missed or a grubber goes dead.

7 tackle set as above.
Double movement, make it like Union.

Coaches can say whatever the Fk they want about a Ref in Post Game Interview without a fine, and Refs have to do one aswell.

Make a naughty **** box behind the dead ball line and players that commit a foul within the final 10m are sent there until their team regains possession.

The ref should just give a automatic 6 again when they commit a foul and if they dont score or make an error they get the choice to kick for goal at the end of the tackle count.

The strip rule. You should only be able to do it defending in your own half not defending in the oppositions half. That'll clean it up a bit more. Teams would be doing it at their own risk in their own half. 7 tackle rule as well. That killed the game.

1. Clock stops when the ball is out.

As a game we are wasting 10 minutes a game on the ball not being in play. Stop the clock, extend the coverage for each game by 15 minutes.

2. Shot clock for goal kicks

You have 30 seconds to kick it from the minute the ref blows try. You don't kick it, you don't get the conversion. Teams are taking well over a minute to kick the thing, it's too long.

3. Obstruction.

Come up with a black and white rule, it's a dead set lottery whether one is obstruction and one isn't. Be consistent.

4. Seven tackle sets

Just get rid of it, was a silly rule to begin with.

5. Kicks from tries

Controversial here but if you kick the ball during the try scoring play you don't get a shot at goal (4 point try).

6. Running try

If the ball isn't kicked, your conversion is taken 5 metres closer from where it was scored. (6 point try)

7. Sin bins

If a player is taken out through foul play, it is an automatic 5 minute sin bin. During this time an official will make a call on whether this is deemed high enough for a sending off.

if a team loses a player through foul play, or reportable offence like a high high shot , the offender is also off for the duration of game, and the team who lost player free interchange

no questioning if offender should be sent make it a rule, if its an offence that costs a team a player, then the offending team has that player sent off for remainder of game

An incorrect play the ball shouldn't be a penalty. Nor should a kick out on the full from a dropout or kick off. It should be a tap instead.

A team shouldn't get the ball back off a kick off if they miss a penalty.

Knock ons should be handovers. The only scrums should be from kicks into touch.

Trainers need to get off the field and aside from obvious injuries, play should continue with a restart a few metres away.

Penalty on half way is ridiculous for kick off.

- ONE REFEREE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- In-Goal sin-bin for one or two sets for repeated infringements
- I would actually like to see escorting/protecting wingers legalised and then we wouldn't see so many bombs for the corners. They do it on every kick anyway. Too difficult to police
- 7 Tackle sets don't bother me too much, I don't think you should get a 7 tackle set for a missed field goal.
- In-Goal Touch Judges have a better view than the bunker. Bring them back
- Not only should there be a 40/20, what about any kick that gains 40 metres. a 20/40 early in a set might open the field up when you're coming out of your own end.
- Unlimited number of players on the bench but you can only make the 8 changes. This means if your halfback is taken out by illegal play, there's a halfback on the bench to replace him.
- Try-Scoring team has the choice if they would like to kick off after their conversion.
- Captains Challenge per half

7 tackle sets are rubbish. If a team decides to kick it dead to nullify an opposition fullback then good on them.

NEW RULE

If a team has 50 or more points scored against them and if that team has at any stage that year have been beaten by the team coming last, they automatically get relegated to last position on the ladder.

i.e. The tigers are currently last - as they got 50 put on them and were previously beaten by us who are last.

2 for me. Bring corner post back into play. Now if a player is trying to score in the corner it is near impossible to stop them with no more shoulder charge so make them have to stay within the field of play to score tries
Second if play has to stop for a player to receive treatment of any kind they either have to be replaced or stay off the field for 5 minutes for player safely reasons. I am sick and tired of players collapsing a meter out from the try line when their team need to do a drop out for cramp or something or play being held up because a player needs to get a cut seen to. We were told this year unless it was a serious injury play would not be stopped but when McDonald fractures and dislocated his ankle play continued for a whole set

1. Only 1 ref.
2. Get rid of 7 tackle sets. You still hget the advantage of a 20m tap which is more than enough.
3. Get rid of scrums. They are just for forwards getting a breather. Just make it a play the ball.
4. Get rid of golden point.
5. If you give away a penalty in your defensive 20m you sit out until your team gets the ball back.
