He surely must only sign a contract that allows him to have Sundays off. Otherwise he has made a mockery of his own beliefs. I doubt very much he has had a little chat with God who said "it's ok Will...You can't play Sundays for 2016 and 2017 but its cool for 2018 and beyond"
If you can't commit fully to a professional footbal team then you aren't really part of the team. I agree he can play really well but I would rather pay more for an actual fullback who plays every game they are fit and realises a first grade spot is something to cherish and something worth fighting for.
Hoppa has not said he can not play on Sundays only that if Club allows him to not play Sundays it is worth a lot to him. His church has come out and said that he can play on Sundays.....
I think you are missing the point. The club could have said no to the Sundays Off, and then he would have only agreed on a competitive contract. If the dogs could afford lets say 200K but another club offered him 500K its pretty obvious he would have gone for the 500K.
Also lets say no club offers him a contract with Sundays off, consider it too much of a risk. Also worried about the fan back lash considering what happened at the Dogs... Does Hoppa just retire. No .
Lets say your wife or child has a medical problem, you take a job somewhere that the pay isn't great but it gives you the flexibility that makes your life much easier to manage with all your responsibilities. Lets say the company can no longer offer that flexibility, do you quit your job and not have another one simply so you can be there for your family, and have no money for medical bills?
Or do you do what you need to do for that job, but maybe you pay someone to help you to make you feel a little less stressed and help out around the home. Paying someone to do that is costly and you feel you should be compensated so either your job needs to pay you more for that loss of flexibility or you'll look for a job that gives you more or that flexibility back.
The amount of that compensation all depends on how much it is worth to the individual. if Hoppa was playing for the reported ~150K he probably values it quite a lot.
