What's all this talk about Dess being an outsider? Is he not wearing the Bulldog emblem across his heart? Wearing our colours? Flogging our boys at training? Let's not forget Dess was not born with a silver spoon shoved up his rectum and yes he has lived in a fibro home. Dess is a westie with his grass roots in Penrith and with the Bulldogs being his fourth HOME along his career path, with stints at obviously Manly and Wests in between.
The Silvertails enticed him with an open cheque book in 1984 when he was playing with Penrith to join them and he repaid them with 25 years of servitude both as a professional player and coach!!! Amassing four Premierships in total (two as a player and two as a coach) Manly should be singing his praises well into the next century since Dess saved them from the abyss of the Northern Eagles turning both the club and team around into being one of the most consistent teams of the modern era. Well the team at least, the club and board are a joke!!! Who is to say that he won't show us the same level of commitment and professionalism? Why does there have to be an us versus Dess attitude? It is not healthy for our team or for our club. I personally would rather it be us versus the world and backs to the wall kind of s**t with Dess as our steely leader.
Peter "Bullfrog" Moore ruled our club with an iron fist and he was no stranger to controversy!!! Let's not forget that it was Bullfrog that appointed an outsider called Warren Ryan to our club as our head coach after a series of clandestine car park meetings near Belmore Boys High, Ryan agreed to take over the coaching of the Dogs. giving us IMO the most successful period in our clubs history. Ryan had inherited Ted Glossop’s Entertainers and turned them into the Enforcers 'Dogs of War'. Ryan did not accomplish this by sitting on his Loral’s and playing favourites he did it by sweeping changes both to the team and behind the scene, much like Hasler is doing . The only difference between these two great coaches is Warren Ryan immediately started signing players from other clubs like hardmen Peter Kelly from the now defunct Newtown Jets club and Peter Tunks from South Sydney, this front row pairing provide the basis for three Bulldogs' premiership victories, whereas Dess is committed to our current squad mainly because of the salary cap restrictions.
I would love for history to repeat itself and for 2012 to be a premiership year for the Bulldogs as it was in 1984 when Warren Ryan took over but in all fairness the current squad is Kevin Moore’s Legacy and not Hasler’s. On paper the current squad look like a contender but in reality they have NOT delivered where it counts on the field. The past two seasons have been abysmal. Players walking of the field after being humiliated by the opposition laughing and smiling flies in the face of our proud club, our heritage and is a slap to the face of every man, woman and child that love our club. Desmond in you I trust!!! Keep the bustards honest and under the whip.
With that said along with Hasler’s credentials there is no reason not to believe that this current squad of Bulldogs won’t be playing finals footy this coming season. But realistically in my opinion 2013 looms as a breakthrough year for the dogs. That is when Dess will be able to shape and stamp his own team. For now Dess Terminate who you will and drop who you must.
