Kikau is the ultimate pro so he is also a top candidate.

Brining in an experienced pro can work, look at Cowboys with Townsend this year. Even if they are new to the club you know exactly what they can bring. Kikau has done it consistently for years at the top level.

1. JAC, close 2nd Kikau. JAC is inspirational and we saw it in games where things did not go for us.
the thing that is also In Kiks favour is that CC knows he works well with him.

JAC only an option if he moves to fb imo. Wingers aren't in a great position to captain, unable to communicate with half the team on the other side. Can't have him out of position all the time.
That's a pretty good point.. can't have him out of position to often either.

Thommo had it last year and u would expect this bloke to put in a good year.. don't k ow how much he can talk though.

Need smart.

Mahoney in frame for Bulldogs captaincy!

He is yet to play a game for the Bulldogs, but new recruit Reed Mahoney has emerged as a captaincy contender following the shock retirement of Josh Jackson.

Jackson has retired despite having a year to run on a contract worth about $600,000. The departure will free up salary-cap space and a top-30 spot that will help Canterbury supremo Phil Gould and new coach Cameron Ciraldo to overhaul the roster.

One of Ciraldo’s first tasks will be to appoint a new skipper and Mahoney will be one of the leading contenders. Other options include Josh Addo-Carr, Luke Thompson and Matt Burton.

Former Eels hooker Mahoney and Panthers star Viliame Kikau are the two big off-season recruits, but the club will be now able to again go to market before the 2023 season begins.

Having missed out on Jayden Sullivan after the Dragons playmaker opted to withdraw his release request, the Bulldogs are still finalising their spine. Jackson will remain at the club in an off-field capacity as a new leader is sought.

Jackson has been one of Belmore’s favourite sons and has made all 241 of his NRL appearances for the “Family Club”. The former NSW and Australian forward is considered one of the most selfless players in the game and once offered to take a pay cut to help the Bulldogs assemble a competitive side.

Realising he was struggling to keep up with the speed of the game and keen not to tarnish his legacy, he has sacrificed a big payday by slipping into an early retirement.

“Josh has long been at the heart of the Bulldogs,” said Bulldogs chairman John Khoury.

“He has led this great club with pride. He has bled blue and white, and played for his state and for his country. We know this decision has not been an easy one and while it is a sad day, there is no doubt that despite not lacing up the boots and running out in 2023, he will continue to inspire the Bulldogs team and our community for many more years to come.

“We cannot thank him enough for everything he has done for our club, but now it is time to reflect on and celebrate his wonderful career.”

Jackson – like club legends Hazem El Masri, Steve Mortimer, Terry Lamb, Chris Anderson, Andrew Ryan and Aiden Tolman – is one of a select few to have worn the blue and white jersey on more than 200 occasions. The 31-year-old has played 11 seasons of top-flight rugby league for the Bulldogs and scored 24 tries.

On top of his appearances at the club level, Jackson has also represented his state and country, collected the Brad Fittler Medal, been named Dally M second-rower of the year twice, won the Provan Summons Medal and has been an inspiring captain to the club that gave him the opportunity to live out a childhood dream.

Jackson, who hails from Gulgong, NSW, made his NRL debut in round 16, 2012, and has remained a loyal member of the Bulldogs team since.

He was a member of the 2014 grand final team and was appointed captain in an emotional announcement during the pre-season of 2018, following the departure of fellow Bulldogs great James Graham.

Since 2018, he has captained the team through some tough times and earned great respect as a leader in the game.

“Josh has always epitomised what this club is about. He’s tough. He’s resilient. He leaves everything on the footy field,” said assistant coach Mick Potter.

“He is, and always will be, the epitome of a Bulldog.

“His efforts and professionalism are unparalleled, and it will be hard to fill that void in the team.

“Josh’s actions have always been about doing the best for the team and the club, and that is what he has done.”Image1667087931.825965.jpg

It was even worse. The ref called Jackson over to chat him about repeat infringements by the team and then played on when he was less than halfway back to position. One of the worst I have seen. The apology was really nice though
Yep happened right in front of us, cheating prick.

Mahoney has to be captain. It's actually a no brainer. He's in the perfect position on the field to be captain(hooker, in the middle), he'll be 25 next year so it's a good age for captaincy(not too young), he's played in big games and he originally came from the dogs.

Burton will be a future captain, Addo Carr is up there but a little crazy though our rep super star.
Believe it or not I think Jake Averillo should be considered due to seniority length of time at the club

Can't see Averillo ever being able to fill a leadership role. Burton is not a big talker but Averillo is on another level. This is the biggest thing holding him back in the FB position. also the few times I have seen him interviewed he looks like he'd prefer to have his balls in a vice then answer another question.

Little doubt that Burton will be the captain at some stage, but not just yet. I still think the best candidate is Luke Thompson.
