Tottenham scored two extra-time goals to reach Carling Cup final

January 22, 2009

STRIKERS Roman Pavlyuchenko and Jermain Defoe have spared Tottenham from one of the most humiliating defeats in their history in the Carling Cup semi-final against Burnley.
Having won the first leg 4-1 at White Hart Lane, the holders were on the verge of going out of the competition after the Championship side led 3-0, to tie the scores on aggregate after 90 minutes, and take the game to extra time.

With under three minutes remaining at Turf Moor, Burnley were on course to go through to a March 1 meeting at Wembley with Manchester United on the away goals rule after goals from Robbie Blake, Chris McCann and Jay Rodridguez.

However, Pavlyuchenko edged Spurs in front after 118th minute before Defoe's 120th-minute effort ensured Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp, who won the FA Cup with Portsmouth last season, would be heading back to Wembley.

13.5 In the Semi-Final ties, if the aggregate score is level at the end of the second game an extra half-hour shall be played. If the aggregate scores are still level at the end of extra time the tie shall be decided by goals scored away from home counting twice. If the teams remain equal after this procedure the tie shall be determined by the taking of kicks from the penalty mark in accordance with the Laws of Association Football.
