Forget the Ennis theories..forget the loss of some players..forget the lack of spark in attack (partly)..forget the denied tries or refs crap decsion.. It all comes down to retention of the ball and completion rates.. Last night it was a woeful 25 from 48 sets..that's only 62.5%.. Against the Tigers it was 72% but the Dogs only had the ball 22 times in 80 minutes.. In the Cowboys game it was 72% as well... However, the recent games against Manly and Melbourne the combined completion rate was a staggering 91%.. And there it is boys..for the Doggies to win they got to hold on to the freaking ball because granted their attack isn't on par with some of the other NRL sides..let's be honest they are a grinding team.. If they get enough sets and complete roughly over 80% of em they generally win..

I guess at this time of year, AND in semi final football, you build your season towards playing this type of footy consistently..we know the Doggies can do this..they've proven it..they've just got to get back to it..and quick!

In simplest terms....we lost because they scored more points than us.

How and when did we turn into a dumb and boring team?

Des agrees with the OP:

Irate Bulldogs coach Des Hasler said his side showed a "total disrespect" for the ball in their 22-16 defeat to Penrith at ANZ Stadium on Friday night.

Even though the Belmore side were denied four tries in the first half by the video referees – including a controversial overrule by the video referees on a Tim Lafai grounding – Hasler refused to blame them for the loss.

"It was one of those nights where we couldn't get one, couldn't get two, couldn't get three, so we probably weren't going to get the fourth one. It was just one of those nights with the rub of the green," he said.

"The [James] Segeyaro first try was pretty contentious as well, but when the referee calls a try, the video referee's got to find a reason not to award it. It just didn't happen. But, regardless of those, we still had the game within our grasp."
Hasler instead took aim at his team who, despite spending almost 20 more minutes in the opposition half than their counterparts, completed just 25 of 40 sets.

"For the uneducated out there, without any ball you don't build any pressure, you don't build any field possession," he said.

"All you do is tackle, all you do is come off your line. Sure (the refs)... they were poor. But they weren't the reason why we didn't win the game."

While Hasler admitted the team's effort was there, he expressed dismay at their alarming issues with ball control.

"Pretty disappointed with the way we played, got to be honest. [I'm] disappointed with the total disrespect with the ball," he said.

"Not going to blame the four disallowed tries. Fifteen unforced errors, four disallowed tries – they should've won the contest.

"[It] probably turned out to be 44 per cent possession in the second half there. First 23 minutes we had four completed sets. It's not good enough.

"So we need to get our focus with the ball. We need to get it pretty quickly. Not much more can be said about it. The number will tell the rest.

"Yeah, the effort's there, 22-16. But at this stage of the competition, it's disappointing considering we were really in the game last week as well."

The series of calls against them in the first half infuriated a number of Bulldogs, including skipper Michael Ennis, who raucously applauded referee Matt Cecchin's decision to call the Lafai try before he was overruled.

"We're playing a highly competitive sport at a very important part of the season so blokes care, that's all it is," he said.

"Blokes care about the result and at times, when they're competing hard and they feel like things are going against them, they get frustrated. That's natural. Again, sometimes you get them sometimes you don't and we just didn't get them."

Winger Chase Stanley is believed to have re-aggravated a shoulder injury after attempting to plant the ball down in the 22nd minute, and could be out for the season.

Canterbury-Bankstown's third straight loss could see them drop as low as sixth spot by the end of the round.

It's a shame that we played so poorly.
It makes it impossible to call the refs out on their ineptness.
If we were competitive, hasler would've racked up a massive fine in last nights presser, but after that performance, it would've looked like sour grapes.
Kasiano needs a kick in the ass too, he was atrocious last night.

I think the no tries led to frustration and that sent us off the rails in the second half after a few dodgy penalties went their way early in it. Some of the players got angry and you could see it in their play. They were rushing out the line like they were wanting to kill someone every tackle and getting caught out of position which helped Penrith score.

If Des thinks the disallowed tries werent the reason he is wrong. They affected the team mentality to the point they were frustrated and thinking we would never have a try allowed, and it showed in their play. We were the better team in the first half easily, and had no points to show for it.

Kasiano was the other major cause. He let in 2 tries because he cant bend or get down low to catch the ball or tackle people, and penalties he gave away put them in good position a few times and they scored. I love Kasiano and love him running the ball, but something needs to change with his defence. People wil be targetting him. It will get around that if you dive at the feet of Kas when near the line, he cant get down to tackle you and you will score. They may also try kicking low at him more. Maybe some other players need to cover him in that respect.

Kas is nothing but an impact player, he can't start a game and can't play longer than 10 mins at a time.

No coincidence he started going ok the last 10 mins of the game.

Des in training should just make the boys play with balls dipped in soap

We are failing to dominate the middle, thus giving the opposition great confidence. Greater intensity and much faster line speed puts pressure on the other side and they end up being the one to make mistakes and chase the ball. And, to me, it's simply a mental thing. Des has got to turn it around immediately.

From what I am seeing, our forwards try to plow up the middle, then wave the ball around one-handed in the hope someone will come through. There is no attempt to break tackles through speed or hit and spin - we just bulldoze. Without structure in attack any attempt at an offload is done in hope rather than planned. I think this is the reason we have such poor ball control.

Absolutely boring football with a lack of enthusiasm, creativity and a game plan tbh. The game plan needs to be revised very quickly because if we are going into the finals (The way we are travelling at the moment this doesn't even look like its going to happen) with this sort of predictability we will have no chance of getting passed the first week.

Des is overusing Kas and Graham, and that's due to Tolman being missing.

Kas, playing bigger minutes and not being used as an impact player, is getting tired in defense and making lazy offloads.

Graham, covering for Tolman, is running out of steam quicker.

We need Tolman back.

I don't usually blame the referees for a loss but that is why we lost, yes we made mistakes, gave away penalties and didn't convert other chances but we technically scored more points than the Panthers and they weren't on the end of all the shit calls that led to our boys being frustrated and nearly giving up.

Imagine how our players would of been feeling mid game after those decisions, and the Panthers getting a no try called a try and etc

We did well to only loose by 6 points after that shit, we beat the referees against Melbourne a few weeks back but not this week.

Something that really irritates me is when our forwards do have an arm free and could make a nice offload they have no support what so ever! That is the only area where we do still miss barba.
