The Kyle Flanagan axing at Canterbury-Bankstown needs some further context.
For the record, Bulldogs coach Trent Barrett spoke to the out-of-form halfback prior to the no. 7 fronting the media to make sure he was in a good head space.
There was no sign Flanagan was on the verge of breaking down and the halfback said he was OK to do media.
The line of questioning put to Flanagan was hardly gruelling or a grilling.
From a football point of view the reason Flanagan has been axed is because of his poor end of sets and his running game.
Both have been below average. The Fox Lab numbers don’t lie in relation to this.
Whereas Melbourne Storm halfback Jahrome Hughes has made 66 runs for 658m in nine NRL games, Flanagan has made 19 runs for 121m.
Flanagan has also only forced three drop outs in comparison to Nathan Cleary’s nine and his defence has led directly to seven try causes.
The Bulldogs intend to give Flanagan all the support he needs to try and improve his game.
Considering Canterbury-Bankstown signed him on a deal worth $450,000 per year until the end of 2023 there’s a big watch on how this unfolds.
