SO this is the family club.
The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.
Steeped in intrigue, mystique and a famous “family first” culture, only the “lucky ones” who have ever pulled on the blue and white of the Berries will ever truly understand.
If you have played or ever worked for the Bulldogs, you are part of an extended family which for so long now has been considered the cultural aspiration for every other rival.
How quickly things change.
Hasler was punished for Canterbury’s poor season.
On Tuesday, those same “family members”, including the majority of players and staff, found out that their leader and head coach Des Hasler had been sacked at the same time a press release was landing in the inbox of every media outlet.
No phone call or hook-ups, no request to meet with management or chairman Ray Dib, no conversations about how it will affect them — or, dare we say it, their family.
Unfortunately for the family club, the poor handling of Hasler’s departure — which can’t be disputed following a wasted season — isn’t in isolation.
For the past two months, the only mystique surrounding the family club has been the cloud of uncertainty that has trailed more than 10 football staff members each and every time they have walked through their front door.
Assistant coaches Jim Dymock, David Penna, Steve Georgallis and football manager Alan Thompson are just a few of the 10 who have had no idea what to tell their wives, partners, sons or daughters about whether they will have a job next year.
With five weeks until the players are due back for pre-season training, you’d think they’d have a clue.
It’s that uncertainty which led experienced strength and conditioner Don Singe, as revealed in The Sunday Telegraph last month, to resign before the Dogs’ final match of the season.
Ray Dib’s position has come under question.
Sackings and a company’s decision not to renew a contract happens daily inside Sydney office towers. It will happen again tomorrow.
But when everything you stand for is the family club, there’s a moral obligation to handle decisions which affect more than just the lives of your employees with the same decency and care.
The Bulldogs are at a delicate point in their history. Everything they stood for is crumbling.
And one more thing.
The Bulldogs, who believe that nothing is more important than family, chose to sack Hasler four days before he celebrates his 30th wedding anniversary with wife Christine on Saturday.
Cheers, Dessie.

So first of all if this isn't the most stupid thing ever produced by an Nrl writer then I dont know what is. "Chose to sack Hasler four days before he celebrates his 30th wedding anniversary with wife Christine on Saturday.", surely this is just them taking the piss. Des failed to make the top 8 and was sacked, just like in any other profession if you don't meet standards then your first out the door, unless your a journo of course.
Also surely Im not the only one who is sick of this "family club" crap, the only motto that should surround the club is the "dogs of war" one, none of that PG rated bullshit.
