SO this is the family club.

The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

Steeped in intrigue, mystique and a famous “family first” culture, only the “lucky ones” who have ever pulled on the blue and white of the Berries will ever truly understand.

If you have played or ever worked for the Bulldogs, you are part of an extended family which for so long now has been considered the cultural aspiration for every other rival.

How quickly things change.

Hasler was punished for Canterbury’s poor season.
On Tuesday, those same “family members”, including the majority of players and staff, found out that their leader and head coach Des Hasler had been sacked at the same time a press release was landing in the inbox of every media outlet.

No phone call or hook-ups, no request to meet with management or chairman Ray Dib, no conversations about how it will affect them — or, dare we say it, their family.

Unfortunately for the family club, the poor handling of Hasler’s departure — which can’t be disputed following a wasted season — isn’t in isolation.

For the past two months, the only mystique surrounding the family club has been the cloud of uncertainty that has trailed more than 10 football staff members each and every time they have walked through their front door.

Assistant coaches Jim Dymock, David Penna, Steve Georgallis and football manager Alan Thompson are just a few of the 10 who have had no idea what to tell their wives, partners, sons or daughters about whether they will have a job next year.

With five weeks until the players are due back for pre-season training, you’d think they’d have a clue.

It’s that uncertainty which led experienced strength and conditioner Don Singe, as revealed in The Sunday Telegraph last month, to resign before the Dogs’ final match of the season.

Ray Dib’s position has come under question.
Sackings and a company’s decision not to renew a contract happens daily inside Sydney office towers. It will happen again tomorrow.

But when everything you stand for is the family club, there’s a moral obligation to handle decisions which affect more than just the lives of your employees with the same decency and care.

The Bulldogs are at a delicate point in their history. Everything they stood for is crumbling.

And one more thing.

The Bulldogs, who believe that nothing is more important than family, chose to sack Hasler four days before he celebrates his 30th wedding anniversary with wife Christine on Saturday.

Cheers, Dessie.

So first of all if this isn't the most stupid thing ever produced by an Nrl writer then I dont know what is. "Chose to sack Hasler four days before he celebrates his 30th wedding anniversary with wife Christine on Saturday.", surely this is just them taking the piss. Des failed to make the top 8 and was sacked, just like in any other profession if you don't meet standards then your first out the door, unless your a journo of course.

Also surely Im not the only one who is sick of this "family club" crap, the only motto that should surround the club is the "dogs of war" one, none of that PG rated bullshit.

Poor des. We really should have considered his feelings and sacked him after his 30th wedding anniversary. Geez we are a bunch of ***** at the bulldogs. Shame on us for not giving des until mid next year to prove to us he is still shit, and shame on us fans for not giving des the support he deserves.

Go fuck yourself you stupid media flop!!! First of all you should thank us for the fact that you can keep your job just by mentioning our club in any stupid fucking article you write. Then you should consider the fact that a football club is for its supporters and not its coach. The club represents us and its about fucking time they showed some balls and did what we have wanted them to do for the past 18 months. Des des-erves no sympathy whatsoever for the mess he has left us in. I hope he never finds another coaching job. Unless its with brisbane or melbourne so he can run them into the ground too!!

Rant over, fuck you very much Mr. Journalist.

Just remember who looked after who for the past 6 seasons... where is the thank you to the club for paying him for what he was actually worth, but he didn't keep his end of the bargain and never lived up to the expectations! Should have left him at manly where he was getting $450k! Bulldogs have set him up for life, all he fucken did was come in to work first and leave last!!! What a joke... thanks for the mess you've left our roster in Des!

Article is fake news! True Bulldogs would have waited to their 30th anniversary night and barged into the bedroom and fire him whilst he was in bed with his missus.

It was given the name Family club during an era when the team, staff and their families got along so well they were like a massive family. It became a part of the culture of the club which was very successful and is envied by other clubs. A tight nit club is a successful club.

These misguided ***** have no idea about the bulldogs.
Bullfrog was one of the most ruthless motherfuckers around. We're the family club because of how we treat the people in our inner sanctum. But if you fuck us, we'll bury you.
Hasler had no business being at the bulldogs. He should be happy he made it all the way to his 30th anniversary. Really he should've been sacked before his 28th.

i thought we were known as the family club because of the number of actual families involved at the club and then the current administration just kept that name because it sounds good for marketing or something, for example yay we are the family club so buy tickets and jersies and memberships for the whole family

Yes, there were a few families like the Mortimers and Hughes', but it went deeper than that. Bullfrog recognised the problems affecting young recruits moving from rural homes to Sydney and took them under his care on and off the field. He often put them up in his home, or found places where they had some form of parental guidance. He would reassure their concerned mums that they would be well looked after. That was the family aspect; and it repaid itself tenfold, because those kids would do anything for the club.

I agree it's a rubbish article.... but I'm fine with the family club moniker. I associate that term with Bullfrog and out most successful period in club history.
