Would you be homophobic for calling your straight mates gay? Or only when directed at gay people?

Using the term gay in a derogatory fashion whether it’s directed at straight or gay people, even objects, actions etc is considered as homophobic. I do it subconsciously sometimes because growing up it was the term me and my mates would use to negatively describe something, but I am trying snap out of it these days. I’m used to hearing it used and am not offended by the term, but if it’s isolating a certain part of society then I feel it’s worth it for me to try and stop using it.

I'd say using the word in any fashion is off limits these days. The outrage brigade etc just have to scream offence these days, despite how obscure an offence complaint might be and everything is off limits, people are then censored into silence.
