Paraguay footballer Salvador Cabanas shot in head
Cabanas celebrates after scoring for America against San Luis on 17 January
Cabanas is a key player for Paraguay

Paraguayan international footballer Salvador Cabanas has been shot in the head in a bar in Mexico City.

Cabanas, 29, who plays for the Mexican club America, is said to be in a critical condition in a local hospital.

Mexican officials said two suspects had been arrested but the motive for the attack was unclear.

Cabanas was expected to play for Paraguay at this year's World Cup in South Africa. He was also linked to English Premier League side Sunderland.

His international team-mate Paulo da Silva already plays for Sunderland, who are managed by Steve Bruce.

Gunned-down Paraguay World Cup star Salvador Cabanas fighting for his life

From correspondents in Cabanas, Mexico
January 28, 2010

Paraguay FIFA World Cup star Salvador Cabanas, who was shot in the head in the toilet of a trendy Mexico City bar, remains fighting for his life in hospital.
The 29-year-old, who plays his club football with Mexican league team Club America, remains in a serious condition following Monday's shooting, which saw his attacker flee the scene.

"His condition remains serious,'' Dr Ernesto Martinez said, the chief of surgeons at the hospital where the player, who is under sedation, underwent emergency surgery.

Martinez added that Cabanas, the 2007 South American footballer of the year, had been fed and had already received some physical therapy.

But the bullet has yet to be removed from the player's skull, with doctors wary of aggravating the damage.

Paraguay will face defending champions Italy, Slovakia and New Zealand in the opening round of the FIFA World Cup 2010, which begins on June 11 in South Africa.

While Cabanas has played in Mexico since 2003, Barclays Premier League Sunderland had shown interest in obtaining him earlier this month.

He has scored 125 goals in 218 games in Mexico and 10 goals in 44 international appearances.

Even if he recovers from the shooting, he has little chance of playing in the World Cup, said Carlos Codas, the former head of the Paraguayan neurological society.
