In light of the injury to Noddy on the weekend, do you think the NRL should introduce a mandatory headgear rule as part of the oficial club uniform for next year? It will not stop injuries but it will definitely lessen them. Noddy would most likely not even be injured if he was wearing headgear.

Nope, cannot see how that would have stopped what happened.
Perhaps the arguement is that the headgear would have acted as a cushion for Sam Rapira's head, and it wouldn't have broken Noddy's cheek.

No

On the roast a while ago i think it was gus who told a story about sheens coaching at penrith, and he made everyone on their team wear headgear for a match (to confuse the opposition - not for protection mind you).

It didnt work and players started collapsing with heat exhaustion as it was a stinker that day.

Personally i think it should be a players choice. There has just be a freakish amt of head clashes the last month

The side flap of the headgear would have provided a certain amount cushioning. This would have lessened the force of impact which had to be absorbed by the cheekbone.

That may be true, DJ but why should all players be forced to wear it?

Headgear will never become compulsory.

It wouldn't have saved Noddy and it would become a blight on the game. No other footballing code this side of the planet forces players to wear headgear, I'm sure the NRL wouldn't like to be seen as having 'soft' players in these trying times either.

And shouldn't.

Some things are unavoidable.

Both for and against have good cases.

Maybe we come to a middleground and say everyone has to grow hair like Idris or Danny Williams, so it acts as a cushion to others heads.

Rapiras bald head had no such padding.

How many injuries would be partially masked by wearing headgear- allowing a player to continue, thinking the injury is less serious than it is. Cop a good knock without headgear, and you're generally out of the game, but also out of danger as far as secondary concussion goes.

Doctors and specialists already came out and said that it would do very little, if anything to prevent concussions and certain facial injuries.

Darren Smith was forced to wear a head gear after the head injury he copped when colliding with Mark McGaw in 1992.

I disagree... Case in point Jamie Soward.

It contains his brain explosions quite well!
