If this is true it appears the 26 year old has not learned his lesson. He has been in trouble for off field incidents over the years which have not endeared him to the ARU or fellow players alike.

Toulon must attract troubled players like a magnet, but only talented ones.

Former Queensland Reds and Wallabies international James O'Connor has spent the night in a Paris cell after being arrested on suspicion of attempting to buy cocaine.

O'Connor was apprehended by plain-clothed officers from the French Anti-Crime Brigade along with former All Blacks star Ali Williams after they were allegedly caught handing over cash to a drug dealer outside a nightclub in the French capital in the early hours of Saturday morning local time.

A judicial source said both players were drunk at the time of their arrest and were not carrying identification papers.

The source added that they were attempting to buy drugs worth about $200 and that the two sellers were also arrested.
  • According to a report on the French outlet lci.fr, the former Toulon teammates were arrested just after 3am (local time) on Saturday outside a famous nightclub near the Avenue des Champs-Élysées.

The pair were allegedly caught handing €200 ($275) to two men, suspected of dealing drugs.

Retired former Blues and Crusaders forward Williams is alleged to have attempted to discreetly discard three packets containing the suspected illicit substance, the report said. The packets were retrieved by investigators.

The suspected dealers were allegedly found to be in possession of MDMA and cocaine.

Williams, 35, currently plays with French club Racing 92, while O'Connor, 26, still plays for Toulon.

Racing 92 said in a statement on Saturday that it had suspended Williams over the incident.

"It was decided to temporarily suspend Ali Williams," the club said in a statement.

"If the investigation confirmed the possession of cocaine and the transaction, it would not only be against the law but also a serious breach of our ethics."

Fairfax Media has asked O'Connor for comment.

O'Connor made his debut for the Wallabies at the age of 18 after a stunning start to his Super Rugby career at the Western Force.

By the tender age of 21, he had 37 Tests to his name and was on course for a long career in the Wallabies jumper.

After some time in Britain, O'Connor returned to Australia with the Queensland Reds in 2015 on a two-year deal but by the end of the year was out the door, citing personal issues as the reason why he ended up at Toulon.

In an exclusive interview with Fairfax Media in November, O'Connor said he had never been more motivated to represent the Wallabies, despite his chequered past.

His last game for the Wallabies in 2013 against Argentina, one he would rather forget.

The following day, O'Connor's ARU contract was torn up as a result of an alcohol-related incident at Perth airport and the fact he had been warned a number of times about his drinking.

Williams, a 77-cap All Black, retired from the game at the end of the 2015 French rugby season, before coming out of retirement this year to represent reigning Top 14 champions Racing 92.
