The problem was it was over before you even realised it began. There's no doubt if Ryan didn't bring Crocker down we lose that game. It would have been a nightmare.

Speaking of last minute grand final plays, seeing replays of the 1986 Grand Final during the week. Why the fuck didn't Bugden spread the ball to the left on that last play? We would have nailed them on the hooter with a try for sure.

Totally agree on the Bobcat tackle - I’ll also leave a link to the master
A good reminder of Turvey, I like your avatar, in 1974 Garry Dowling from fullback provided most of the attack followed by the pommie Brian Lockwood. Lockwood was incredible that year in the front row, not a big bloke but the ball skills of Beetson and Lyons

Sure, but still a cracker.
Happened right in front of me.
Sorry to see Simonsson get injured (we heard his cries as soon as he hit the ground) but it was still a try saving tackle in a GF and a very good one - Edwards totally deserved the Clive Churchill Medal, great game.
Good tackle indeed.. but Sattlers & Ryans were better IMO as both had the game on the line..

The way that Andrew Ryans GF-tackle is completely lost into oblivion without recognition.

Don't get me wrong - Sattlers tackle in the 2003 Grand Final was amazing to watch live - scores tied up, mid-way through the second half, a lock chasing down a winger... amzing.

Now let's look at Ryan's tackle -

  • Dogs leading by 3 points in a GF.
  • 80th minute of the game
  • Floating ball from the halfback (Finch) finds Crocker in some space.
  • Tonga misses his assignment (nearest defender) as Mick (the dick) Crocker finds space - with support looming.
  • Ryan cuts in behind his defensive line to effect the tackle - not only grounding the ball-carrying player, but also dislodging the ball in the same tackle.
What makes this feat all the more amazing was this was our stand-in captain for the day.

It seems that this play has been lost into history, with only Peter Sterling making such a big deal of it at the time.

It's no flick pass for a try. It's no forward tackling a back into touch to save a try. But it was a tackle that won us our 8th premiership.

Love you Bobcat. Even if those flogs at 9 won't give you the recognition you will always deserve.

The media keep singing praises about 1 great Sattler tackle and deservedly so ...
But why does the media always choose to ignore the 3 great cover tackles in the 1980 grand final by none other than The Greatest one of all Steve Turvey Mortimer ?

1979 GF Stan Cutler tackle on Brian Johnson was a beauty too. Didn't win the game for us but one more first half try from the Dragons would have killed our spirited second half.

Sterlo tried to give it credit at the time but Rabs didn’t want to hear it I’m afraid

Ryan played a crucial part in 2 of our 3 tries and saved the match with that tackle. It’s criminal what the forum did to him later in his career and yet Reynolds was carried off. Pathetic
Correct, he called for the ball for utais try.

Those of us who remember watching Turvey play, he pulled off these type of cover defending tackles week in week out. Funny how no one ever remembers them.
Turvey pulled off at least 3 try saving cover tackles in our 80 GF win over the Chooks and saved even more tries in the year before in the 79 GF loss to St George.

I’ve given up wanting any recognition from ANY of the media pricks. We are the Bulldogs, an unfashionable club. A villian to the media. We will never get recognition.

Turvey WAS the cover defending king. It was what he was known for along with his chop and chase. God forbid the day comes we lose this icon, those scum will join the party and praise him for a day or 2. Get fk’d. He should be an immortal NOW.

Bobcat? One of the greatest and most significant in the modern era when it came to defining a team winning a comp. We are not the Bunnies, not the a Roosters, not the Broncos, so don’t wait for anyone else to love our club like we do.
