‘Need to enforce the rule’: NRL’s shock bunker move means changes for field goals

NRL convert impresses for Tigers | 00:30

The NRL has reportedly given the bunker power to rule on and make decisions regarding field goals in a huge change to the way the game is officiated in crucial moments.

According to AAP, field goals will be analysed by the match review official in the same way tries will be in 2024 to ensure each attempt is legal.

Every field goal attempt will reportedly be reviewed by the bunker before play restarts, with analysis beginning as soon as points are awarded by the on-field referee.

The bunker will reportedly be taking a strict approach to kick blockers, whilst also being able to rule on if the ball passed through the posts and whether it was taken from outside the 40m line.

The bunker official will reportedly inform the on-field referee to delay kick-off until a final decision has been made regarding any foul play.

Should a missed field goal attempt go past the dead ball line, the bunker will also be able to check if markers were square before pressuring the kicker.

Interestingly, the bunker reportedly won’t be able to rule whether the defensive line is offside whilst attempting to stop the field goal attempt.

On-field referees can reportedly also call for bunker reviews on field goal attempts before they award points to the respective teams.

The NRL is reportedly placing emphasis on attacking blockers during a field goal attempt and will be cracking down on those floating around the ruck.

“This is something that has got progressively worse over time, and one where we need to enforce the existing rule,” NRL head of football Graham Annesley said during a midweek video session.

“Players don’t have to be a certain number of metres behind the ruck.

“But there is also a rule which talks about deliberately obstructing another player not in possession of the ball.

“If the players are forming that kind of blocking action ... the referee ... and the bunker can determine that is an obstruction, and penalise for that

So now they'll be able to look through 78 different ways to disallow field goals. This administration needs to be fucked off. Pure and simple they're finding ways to ruin the game that I couldn't dream up.

They just keep finding more ways to manipulate results ... Now when a field goal is kicked to win a game in golden point, we can't celebrate that moment and have to wait for clearance minutes later... Kills the moment really

I mean you could fix the teams being clearly offside for a field goal attempt…..

The ref always puts his whistle away in these situations, especially in golden point and finals, etc so not surprised there.

The issue with giving the refs more power to scrutinize on an existing rule regarding attacking blockers is concerning, it's fluid and the refs can rule whichever way they want.

I'd be more interested if they looked at the attacking side running block to prevent defenders getting to the kicker on the fifth tackle. Some sides have perfected a move where a player runs diagonally across the line of anyone trying to charge down the kick, effectively providing a shepherd for the kicker.

The new(est) interpretation will address that to some extent - defence has to stay behind the ruck until the ball is kicked - fb n wingers will have a little more space - if my understanding is correct anyone in front of the ruck at time the ball is kicked or anyone that causes a defender to change their run in pursuit of the kicker can be penalised straight away. Defenders may be more concerned with staying onside and getting down field rather than blocking.

If this was enforced basically no field goal would be legal as at least one or more players are always in front of the player having the shot. These rule changes are a blight on the game not an improvement. EVERY year one or more rules changed to "Improve" the game:tearsofjoy: but seem to only suit or help certain sides....and don't even get me started on the way the rules are going to be with tackles. Watching the ESL and the number of binning's and send offs due to perceived high shots the officials will be rubbing their hands together with absolute glee at the way they can swing a game on these rulings.

Yes player protection paramount but the number of these high shots which are purely accidental due to what happens at the time (players ducking, slipping etc.) will lead to the game being unrecognizable.

All they have to do is use the touch judge, why even have them if they can’t make calls?
Agree. It seems the sideline officials are there just to look pretty with their flags...half the time a clear cut decision visible to those a hundred yards away in the crowd can't be made by the guys who are practically in the players pockets. There are useless at helping mark the ten and miss plenty in tackles that everyone else can see. Yep, they are just assistants but can't perform the tasks which that description covers. Wired for sound but no communication..

More ways to introduce stoppages, so they can promote their sponsors

Small problem they are even worse than the refs lol! Masters of missing everything and pulling up something that's wrong.

Your not wrong lol.
Miss the one that's a metre forward, pull up the one that's a foot backwards...and people wonder why fans get the you know whats. The quicker ball technology is implemented the better.

Bunker can't even rule on defensive players being offside lol. Even if they are 5 metres in front.
What a joke our code has become.
