Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs propose $50m Centre of Excellence

A multimillion-dollar vision for a hybrid training and administration complex for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs featuring rehabilitation and outdoor retail spaces could soon become a reality. Read about the plans.

A multimillion-dollar vision for a hybrid training and administration complex for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs featuring rehabilitation and outdoor retail spaces could soon become a reality.

The $50m facility, named the ‘Centre of Excellence’, would transform the Bulldog’s homebase at Belmore Oval Sports Complex on 3B Edison Lane, Belmore.

Canterbury-Bankstown councillors will consider the proposal at tonight’s council meeting and debate on a potential new long-term lease arrangement with the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs currently have a lease with council for 3B Edison Lane and 1C Leylands

Parade on Belmore sports ground from 2014 to 2035.

Planners state the complex would “offer a unique facility that brings together a mix of community and high-performance elements intended to foster excellence in rugby league”.

“The Bulldogs have a longstanding, rich history with Canterbury-Bankstown council, with long held leases for the use of the Belmore Oval Sports Complex and adjacent amenities,” planners state.

The facility would include areas for training and administration, including a gymnasium and training, treatment and rehabilitation facilities and aquatic recovery pools.

The plans also include a lecture theatre, meetings rooms and a public terrace space with outdoor retail and cafes.

The NSW government committed $40m to the project last year and the rugby team will cover the remaining $10m – pending a new lease agreement to “ensure their long term tenure of the site”.

Planners state there is “mutual benefit” in council approving the site as the club could create new junior rugby league teams in a “bespoke” sporting centre.

“The club estimates that developing the Centre for Excellence will potentially increase those participating in these programs by 5,000 people across the local community,” planners state.

“The proposal presents as a unique opportunity for investment into new infrastructure that

Council would not provide as part of its local government obligations.”

The plans will be subject to the State Significant Development pathway for approval.

The Bulldogs have been contacted for comment.

Could that extra $10 million be for upgrading the hill area to include a none covered stand connected to the Centre of Excellence that faces the Petter Moore fields, cafes and other amenities faces the ground ?
Other teams are getting brand new stadiums, the least they could do for us is to upgrade Belmore to make it appropriate for some small home games !!!

I thought this had already been approved? And construction was due to start at some point this season. Or have I dreamed that?
I think the delay is that the club wants the lease extended beyond 2035. I'm guessing if they wait beyond building the upgrades, the council will probably be a holes and up the rent.

Will we find that corporate boxes somehow make their way into the new complex?

When there is a will there is a way !
Furbishing and utilizing the old stand will go a long way to address the issue.

I would buy Canterbury Racecourse, make that our HQ, then demolish BSG and build units to help finance everything.

Simple.
Disgraceful. How can you even suggest to demolish the heart and soul at Belmore??

Belmore needs a refresh. Fans are deluding themselves, most games do not draw more than 25k during the regular season. We do not in any way shape or form need a 30k plus stadium.

Imagine if they something similar to brookvale and our updated seating in front of it. Put small steep stands with corporate facilities at either end we have our stadium. 20k seating we have our home. Could still play Good Friday at Accor etc

Is there any heart or soul left in Belmore? The last 10 games we have played there have been our worst performances. Plus it's the worst venue in the league, glorified training paddock.

Realistically we can't build a proper stadium there, so I'd knock it down, leave the field as a park and build units around it. With that development and the leagues club, we would never have to worry about money again.

The land is council owned, designated park and recreation.
What right would the Bulldogs have to build units on it?
