The Canterbury Bulldogs have nearly lost the unlosable as they bounced back from their embarrassing defeat last week to the Knights to take a 36-32 win over the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Accor Stadium.

After conceding 66 last week, the Bulldogs wanted improvement and the first five minutes didn't show much for them as Tom Burgess went over from close range through some very soft defence right in the middle of the park.

The Bulldogs took advantage of their first attacking opportunity through some Matt Burton magic when the Canterbury five-eighth ran to the line and threw a lovely floating pass out to Blake Wilson and the winger had his first try in the NRL.

Things didn't go well from the kick-off for the Bulldogs as Ryan Sutton had to be stretchered off after coping a high shoulder from repeat offender Taane Milne which initially was put on report before the officials took further action and put Milne into the sin bin.

Taking advantage of the extra man, things were looking good for the Doggies when Tevita Pangai Junior set things in motion with his charge down before Matt Burton again went left and found Blake Wilson for his second try. The Bulldogs continued to take advantaged as the Souths defence looked lethargic and the shift right then back to the middle opened up things for Reed Mahoney.

Souths were able to regroup and get possession back as Tyrone Munro showed why he is one of the stars of the future as he put on the footwork and speed to beat the Bulldogs defence. Blake Taaffe converted from wide out to close the gap to 18-12.

It was both sides of the park that was on fire for the Bulldogs as they spun the ball to the right and were able to cross in the corner with Jacob Kiraz. Matt Burton added a fourth conversion and the Bulldogs held a 24-12 lead which they took into half time.

The second half could only be described as wild as Canterbury extend their lead not long into the half when Ethan Quai-Ward got on the board as it wasn't conventional but the Bulldogs were able to go left again and get over in the corner.

Despite trailing by 16, Souths showed they weren't out of it as Blake Taaffe put on the speed to beat the Bulldogs defence and score his own try. The conversion was waved away and the Dogs still lead by 12 points.

The Bulldogs added a penalty goal to extend their lead out to 14 but it was another chaotic moment with the Dogs initially going over but denied by a double movement, but with referee Liam Kennedy playing advantage from the scrum, the Rabbitohs were penalised for being offside.

Blake Taaffe added his second try of the game to keep the Rabbitohs in it as he was able to get his way to the line. Dean Hawkins took over the kicking and added the conversion to close the gap down to 8.

Inside the final 10 minutes, the Bulldogs looked like they put the game to bed when Blake Wilson got over for his third after Matt Burton set up the attacking raid swooping on the loose ball.

The Bulldogs lead by 14 and seemingly had the game under control though the Rabbitohs had different ideas scoring two tries within 40 seconds of each other. The first came when Tyrone Munro chased through a grubber kick to get his second. The missed conversion probably hurt the Rabbitohs chances as the score remained 10 points apart.

An unlikely source pulled off a piece of magic when Tallis Duncan put on the skills as he threw a dummy after the Rabbitohs elected to shift the ball from the kick-off but Duncan went through the middle of the field and despite having heavy legs he got to the line.

It was a piece of luck for Toby Sexton that saved the Bulldogs from defeat as a grubber kick from Souths had a Tass try written all over it if it wasn't for the desperate grab from Sexton.

Next weekend, South Sydney have the bye before welcoming back their stars for a clash with the Broncos on the Sunshine Coast. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs also have the Broncos as their next opponents as they host them at Belmore.

Canterbury responded from their thrashing last week at the hands of Newcastle to grab a dramatic 36-32 win over South Sydney in an entertaining clash at Accor Stadium.

New signing Toby Sexton was the star, adding much needed control to the Bulldogs, with his halves partner Matt Burton able to show all his skills off the back of his new partner’s organisation, with a heap of points the result.

“Having Toby there freed Burto up to play his natural game, but even if Toby wasn’t there, I think Burto had a point to prove,” said coach Cameron Ciraldo. “I’m happy with the way he went.

“Toby did a lot of the organising and took the pressure off. He’s had two sessions with us and didn’t look out of place. He’s got that character where you feel like he’s been around a lot longer with us. He’s fit right in.”

This was a game with a bit of everything: a controversial sin bin, a heap of tries, some breakout performances from youngsters and even a laser-pen incident that saw a teenager ejected from the ground.

It was as if the NRL cameras had shown up to cover a NSW Cup game: nine of the 34 on show played on Good Friday when these two met – but in the curtain raiser, rather than the main event.

At times, the tackling did tell that story. The Dogs have been involved in two 60+ point games in a row, but at least this time they came out on top.

Blake Wilson, one of that nine, got a hat trick, while Tyrone Munro, who scored twice, played Jersey Flegg that weekend. Blake Taaffe also scored twice and was Souths’ best player.

The Bunnies were right up against it from the start. They were missing five to Origin – Cam Murray, Cody Walker, Keaon Kolomatangi and Damien Cook – plus Latrell Mitchell to injury.

Ultimately, it was insurmountable: even though this Dogs side have been bang out of form, they had too much for a Souths team with just one member of their starting spine left.

They were aided in that by a confusing, Bunker-assisted sin bin. Ryan Sutton was caught high by Taane Milne, with the contact ending the English forward’s night and seeing the Souths man sent to the bin. Sutton was taken to hospital with a neck injury.

Though there was no doubt that it was a penalty, there was doubt that it was forceful – Milne was retreating – and questions about the process, as the player was put on report, then binned several minutes later while the medicab waited on Sutton.

Whether it was merited or not can be debated, but what is clear that had the game not been delayed for the injury for an extended period, there was no chance that the sin bin would have occurred.

Jason Demetriou was incensed in the post-game press conference.

“We’re finding things to do,” said of the Bunker. “We’re finding ways to get people who aren’t even on the field to make big decisions. The live decision was what it was. For whatever reason, we want to slow it down again and again, manufacture an opinion and send a bloke in the sin bin.

“We’re out there with more than half our cap missing and we can’t get a fair crack. I’d be very surprised if Taane got anything to answer. It’s a collision, it’s unfortunate, but it’s not a head knock.”

“Anyone who watches that can clearly see that the injury doesn’t come from Taane Milne. I’ve got my contacts in, so I’m pretty sure I can see it: there is no way that comes from Taane Milne.”

Is this the new Bulldogs spine?

As soon as Canterbury got any field position, their new-look attack came right to the fore, with a level of inventiveness that has been missing for months.

That creativity came twofold: not only was Sexton exceptional on debut, his move into the halfback role freed Matt Burton up for his best game in a long time, with more licence to play the game as he saw it.

Sexton, while he has not always impressed in first grade, has long possessed one of the best short-kicking games in the comp and did the bulk of the work with the boot here.

His presence allowed Burton, again, to improve: he could pick and choose his moments to unleash the big bomb without the pressure of being in charge of all the other stuff that, patently, is not his strength.

The organisational levels improved, too, and the ability to get outside players involved came with it.

Jake Averillo, back at the back after a season in the centres, was also excellent. It does beg the question of why he hasn’t played there all year, with his finest work in a Bulldogs jersey coming as a fullback and Hayze Perham one dimensional in his stead.

Perham, who has plenty of running but no pass, was shown up by some of the ball-playing on display from his replacement. He scored in reserve grade, where he played in the centres with Khaled Rajab preferred in the 1.

Yeah he is fuckwit this south's coach. Knew he was an idiot when he was so happy when they beat us last time when we had all our injures plus JAC went down at the start of the game. Good thing is Cowboys are finishing strong hopefully they can push them out of the 8. How sweet would it be if both South's and Easts missed the 8. I actually thought the game was reffed pretty well very few penalties and 6 agains just let the teams play. That's probs why he is pissed ref didn't give them enough of a leg up.

Anyone watching that tackle could see a forceful shoulder charge to Sutton's head from Milne. It was done in a forward motion, not from a player backpeddling, otherwise the hit would have been soft, and Sutton would have been able to play on.

Let's not forget how Souths got a questionable decision earlier this year when Preston was sent off, and later exonerated for a "classic hip drop".
They piled on points against a depleted Dogs side, and were happy with the ref that day.

-Really? Sexton saved the day with a clever grab on a kick through. Souths did similar on a few of our short kicks, and weren't labelled "lucky' for defusing our potential tries. You could also say that Wilson was lucky when he took a pass on his fingertips to score.

In the first half they were good and could have easily been 30 -12 up at half time we were all over them
Then half time comes it’s like there being told to play conservative but defence is a major issue especially our middle it’s very soft

Fox post-match guys summed it up very well:
- Big Mal said on Fox, irrespective of what caused the injury there was a shoulder charge to the head and the NRL has a penalty for that offence
- Cronk rhetorically asked did Milne get sent to the sin bin because of the severity of the injury, yes, is it ideal, no, was it the right decision & outcome, yes.

So stop whinging Demetriou, you get the rub of the green nearly every single game Souths play and that sin bin decision was correct anyway. What would be hilarious is if the MRC listened to Demetriou's post match comments and decided that both Milne & Tatola had cases to answer.

For once I thought our game's referee was very good and there was no highly contentious calls that seemed to greatly influence the outcome of the game. He wasn't highly influenced by the vocal crowd either.

Well said.

I think the reason that so many Souths fans were booing at the game was because the ref was not giving them their expected armchair ride.

If an attacking player is falling and the defenders arm hits the attacking players chin is it a penalty? YES

IF an attacking turns his back into the defence and falls awkwardly and the defender landed on his neck, is it a penalty? YES

Both situations accidental but penalised 99.9% of the time.

So irrespective of intent or not shoulder to face causing severe injury is what? Reported and binned so fuck offf with your whining.

I have tried posting a comment in the mainstream media about the laser incident, asking why they haven't made more of this story, but the moderators have refused to post my comments. Why is the media uninterested in something that could have permanently damaged Burton's eyesight?

As I've said, had it been a Bulldog fan, the headlines this morning would have been white hot.

If it was a bulldogs fan ACA, seven news, The project , SBS and Daily telegraph would be be covering it right now. The PM would also have been called in.

I might be wrong here, but the original article posted says Wilson got his first NRL try this week. I thought he scored one on debut though.

I’d suggest because there’s a decent chance the perp will be charged and they might not be allowing public comments on matters that will go before a court. It’s the same when lasers were being pointed at pilots too.

Only thing that concerns me about that is I heard them saying on tv that they (assuming they are security) identified and ejected the person involved. I would be thinking the police would have taken them away to a station to be charged if they were facing more serious consequences. Maybe an underage situation.

If the police don't get involved then it should be all over the media ...... oh wait a second it's not a Dog's supporter, it was just a lovable larrikin Rabbitohs supporter who loves their club and got a little too enthusiastic .... move on nothing to see.
