I've known 2am infomercial shoppers who make less regret buys than Gus. He really has lost the plot lol
As for Ray, he gets a bad rap. Has been injury plagued most of his career, and this year he just completely lost interest under a coach who never had the playing group's back and set out from the start to put a wrecking ball through this place and rebuild it with a squad of old Penrith faves on overs, bit part journeymen and an alarming over-abundance of utilities. Can't blame him for not wanting to play for that turnip. Hope he gets another crack at NRL one day so he can show what he's capable and stick it to Ciraldo.
Good luck, Ray.
You are pissed off that CC has put a broom through the playing group, that contains players who have downed tools on their last 3 coaches?
They obviously quit on Barrett, Potter had a little bounce before normal service was resumed and last season showed some promise initially, only to tank once again.
CC is fair but hard as fucking nails and KNEW after a few weeks of PRE-SEASON that many of our squad couldn't hack the training required let alone playing actual NRL footy. He was especially alarmed at the players defensive skills and poor mentalities .... We were light years off the top squads ... FACTS.
Hence, the only player re-signed from that lot is Morrin .... and we have a stack of departures.
The aim is to have a bunch of kids come through who only know one way of doing things ... hard-nosed with 100% commitment ... those that do not have it will be quickly found out.
Every Penrith player interviewed talk endlessly about hard work, needing to improve .... it has been drilled into them from a young age.
CC is the coach most responsible for the development of Penrith's current squad .... 10 YEARS involvement in some cases.
He laid the foundations for their machine-like defensive systems.
Kiks and Critta LOVE him ... they both had multiple clubs to choose from but neither had any hesitation in joining us.
Our new signings have been identified as being able to help with culture, training, attitude as well as being versatile to help with depth (more bang for your bucks if players can fill multiple positions). Critta who is also versatile, is admired as a model pro and leader. His brother Christen is a former clubman of the year at The Dogs and loved by all ... they come from a great family. Xerri is an X factor type with a ceiling as high as it gets.
Peter Moore always said that Kevin Ryan and Bob Mcarthy both brought MORE to the club on the training field than through their playing deeds.
Intangibles play a huge role in the scheme of things but are always overlooked.
The Bulldogs had most of the qualities mentioned above in bucket loads, but over time and for various reasons they were lost ... Unless DRASTIC changes to the culture were made the club was going nowhere ... enter Gus and CC.
Winning Flegg and Matts is proof that good things are finally happening again.
Patience is needed for the NRL team because we were starting from such a low base and the market is tough at present. We are sticking to our plan of picking up top talents as they become available .... the jig saw will eventually become complete.
To be going off on CC after one season at a club with a sub-par roster, loosing mentality, poor culture and a ton of injuries in important positions is very short sighted. He wasn't responsible for the first five or six years of The Dogs Decline.
