Measly payout

THE top 25 clubs in NSW raked in close to $1 billion in pre-tax profits from gaming machines alone last year, according to figures released for the first time.
However, the contributions they gave back to the community amounted to less than $25 million - more than half of which was repaid to the clubs in Government rebates.
The release of the figures comes on the back of a new $427 million pokie tax offer which would see the tax rate for clubs making more than $20 million drop from 40 per cent to 36 per cent.
This would, on average, save larger clubs around $1.5 million a year.
Clubs earning under $1 million in gaming profits will pay not tax at all.
The new deal will further eat into the state's already weak budget position.
The gaming profit results and community contribution figures for all clubs have been published on the Department of Gaming and Racing website for the first time, following new laws allowing their release.
The wealthiest club in the state was the Bulldogs League Club which alone made $69 million last year in pre-tax pokie profits.
It gave back $1.14 million to the local community - on top of the $5 million it gives directly to the football club.
Of the non-sporting clubs, Rooty Hill RSL was the greatest money spinner, pulling in $50 million from pokies and making $900,000 in contributions.
The 25 clubs, the majority of which are in Sydney, make up a quarter of all club gaming profits.
However, the clubs claim the figures are misleading because they do not take into account wages paid, subsidised food and beverages and tax.
ClubsNSW said in total, $100 million was paid in community contributions from the state's 1400 clubs.
"The clubs' philosophy is not about making a profit," ClubsNSW spokesman Jeremey Bath said.
"Its about affordable entertainment for the community."
ClubsNSW will seek unilateral endorsement from the clubs to reject the deal at a meeting on Wednesday and threaten to campaign against the Government ahead of the next election.
The Opposition has promised to freeze the pokie tax rate at 2005 levels.
