That's about the 10th fullback we have tried to convert from another position....what is the definition of insanity again? FMD

I have a job mate but I am allowed to take breaks and even take days off. You're not ?

When you sign duds like Flanagan, DWZ, Allan and Elliott for big money backended deals are the only way out quickly. I've shown how we could do this but be in $1M surplus by 2024. Can you see us improving by 2022 in the positions we need fixed and being ahead financially within 2 years any other way ?
The answer is yes, backended contracts are a disaster waiting to happen, the nrl has warned clubs against it,for a reason.

Burton's contract is back ended, and has a PO for the 3rd year. When you're desperate sometimes you don't have a choice. I still stand by there's nothing wrong with back ended contracts if done correctly.

Having a player option doesn’t make it back ended.

That wasn't my point, year 2 is back ended (year 3 might as well be back ended too because he's going to be getting an upgrade if he's the player we think he is). I'm just saying putting a PO in a contract is desperate.

We start a new thread
You're underselling the potential here. It's worth creating 4-6 threads if a rumored player signing breaks down or was never in the works outside of the forum or in the minds of the media.

He signed to play under Baz. Baz contract ends in 23 so he may want to assess his options and see if Baz is still the coach is in 24.
The club is mad if they don’t offer an upgrade and extension the moment he walks into Belmore for pre-season training.

He needs to be extended before November next year, that's when other clubs can start negotiating with him (legally).

Yes 830K for next year but in place of DWZ, Allan, Flanagan and Elliott we upgrade for Dufty, Johnson, B.Smith and Afoa. By 2024 we end up with over 1M in the bank with this plan.

If anyone else can work out a better way for us to upgrade in the 4 positions (3 spine + prop) we need so quickly and be out of debt so quickly I'm happy to hear it.

Yes we need a new hooker but we also need a prop (not many on the market if you look), but we also need a halfback, but we also need a speedy fullback with a passing game and a step. This covers all.

1 Dufty
2 JAC
3 Naden
4 Cotric
5 Okunbor
6 Burton
7 Johnson
8 Afoa
9 Smith
10 Hetherington
11 RFM
12 Jackson
13 Thompson

14 Averillo
15 Atoni
16 Seumanufagai
17 Topine / Doorey
Yes yes yes we need all those things. You my friend need to get out more !! Spending all that time working out all that is not normal behaviour!

I think the issue isn’t just pure maths though.
It’s not as simple as saying ‘Sell Elliott’, ‘Sell Allen’, ‘Buy Dufty’. First of all you need buyers who need not only players in those positions but believe those individuals are what they need and then have the appropriate cap space to work out deals where both clubs are happy with what they’re paying until the end of the existing contract. That last part is often the stumbling block because every club wants to pay less in player trades. If it were easy, we’d be seeing a lot more mid contract transfers, but what we mostly see are end of contract exits to other clubs or releases.

Don’t know I’d call that back-ended - it’s not a Foran/Eastwood scenario where long established players get large pay rises to sign/re-sign purely by kicking the can down the road - that’s truly back-ended. With Burton he’s only signed for 2 years with a PO for year 3 and the second year a pay rise likely represents the acknowledgment of a young player improving and maturing. I think it’s a bit different.

Yes you might not agree with the exact figures I've quoted but I've got as close as I can.

If we did something like this we could potentially afford all the players above for 2022 and beyond

Main points are

- Sell DWZ to the Tigers or whoever. If he's on 800K for next year as they say, we pay 50/50 at 400K and the Tigers pay 400K for 2022
- Sell Flanagan. He's on around 450K reportedly. If someone (Sharks) will sign him for 250K we have to throw in 200K a year for 2022 and 23. He might fetch a little more hopefully.
- Sell Elliott (480K). If he gets 350K we contribute 130K for 2022 and 23
- Sell Corey Allan (400K). He should be able to get at least 300K a season elsewhere. We contribute 100K per year for 2022 and 23

We offer the Storm first pick of the 4 players above at the discounted rates for B.Smith for 2022.

We need to tie up Smith NOW for 3 years at least before the new Brisbane team come into negotiations. They'll offer him close to a MIL a season. We can upgrade him now (600K) for 2022 (extra couple of hundred Ks in his pocket) plus pay probably slightly more than what the new team would offer for 2023 and 24. (1M a season) We badly need to get this deal done now for 2022 or we'll be without a decent hooker all next year then offering him 900Ka season for 2023 and 24 (which may not be enough) and we'll have missed the incentive of the extra 200K for 2022. We also have his mate JAC as an incentive remember.

B. Smith 600K for 2022. and 1M a season for 2023 and 2024 (average of 866K a season for 3 years)
Johnson 450K a season for 3 years
Dufty 300K for 2022, 450K a year for 2023 and 24 (average of 400K a season)
Bunty Afoa 340K for 2022, 360K a year for 2023 and 24
2 x minimum wage BIG props at 120K a season each. Consider islanders currently playing Super League or young props currently in Canterbury Cup / Qld comp

Don't re-sign RFM at the end of 2022. Good player but injury prone. Let Jackson go to UK hopefully at the end of 2023. He'll be worn out. Shop Stimson early also.

Surplus of around 140K for 2023 and over 1M surplus for 2024 (more if the cap rises). For 2024 we could buy the best prop in the comp or 2 very decent props. We can use this money for upgrades too IF needed hopefully.

Please see the breakdown below (rough guide) Yes not 100% accurate I KNOW but it's a ballpark figure

The NRKL doesn't allow back ended contracts, so these wouldn't be allowed;
Brandon Smith 600,000 1,000,000 1,000,000
Matt Dufty 300,000 450,000 450,000

The latest I've heard on this is the NRL actually does allow back ended deals, they just advise clubs to not do it. I think front loading (especially) and back ending deals is actually the way for the bottom clubs to catch up (maybe a couple of extra years of pain salary cap/results wise, but can be beneficial in the long run)

Good chance we will have to upgrade Burton quickly also, if he is as good in the halves as we hope.

There's nothing wrong with them for star players where the increase is in line with % increase in the cap.
