‘’You didn’t earn your money last season’’

They are the blunt words Souths owner Russell Crowe shouted at Luke Keary to trigger his dramatic exit from The Burrow, and it’s the slap in the face the Roosters are echoing if they sign Cooper Cronk.

Cronk’s signature is a once in a lifetime opportunity, but loyalty to Keary has greater value.

Speaking on Fox Sports' NRL 360, journalist Paul Kent revealed the Roosters are looking to add the Queensland halfback to their list of marquee signingsalongside James Tedesco as Cronk completes his move to Sydney.

The 25-year-old has a year to run on his Roosters contract, so having him feel appreciated and in the best head space to re-sign as opposed to filling in a bench role and questioning his importance - a familiar feeling from his Rabbitohs days - is crucial if you want to lock Keary down long term.

In his mind, he’s just helped reinvigorate the Roosters with a 13-place jump up the NRL ladder in a single season, sparked a lethal attacking edge that piled on a stack of points and proved himself as one of the more dominant five-eighths in the game, yet his club feels the need to find a replacement.

Why try to fix something that isn’t broken?

He could accept the opportunity to learn under one of the game’s greatest ever playmakers with open arms, but find me one NRL player that is happy to play off the bench when he are a top-class first grader in the peak years of his career?

Cronk will no doubt bring immediate success, if not probably push the Roosters into premiership favouritism, but all for one, maybe two seasons. And if it’s the latter, you can kiss Keary goodbye as the conga line of clubs prepare to dip into their savings accounts for the off-contract star.

The Roosters have to ask themselves: Do we want to put all our eggs in one basket for a 2018 premiership that we are already in good shape to claim and put our relationship with Luke Keary on the line? Or do we believe in what we’ve built in just one season of football and put our faith behind our exciting new halves combination?

Rated as one of the top buys of the year, Keary was statistically the second best five-eighth in 2017 under St George-Illawarra’s Gareth Widdop, coming in at second for tries (8), third for try assists (15), second for line breaks (12) and third for line breaks (19) amongst all number sixes in the competition.

In comparison to his suggested Melbourne replacement, he crossed over for two more tries (8 to 6), the pair shared the same amount of try assists (16), topped him in linebreaks with 14 compared to Cronk’s 6 and pipped him by one in linebreak assists (21 to 20). The Storm halfback was only more dominant with the boot as he made over 100 more kicks with Mitchell Pearce taking on most of the kicking duties for the Roosters.

On the surface, Cronk is the unquestionable choice. But you can have Keary, who matched it with one of the game’s premier halves in all attacking areas last season, for less than half the price of a Queensland and Kangaroo great who can command over $1 million as a minimum wage.

Luke, you did earn your money last season.

It’s a bullshit article. Keary has already been spoken too and has been assured that his future is safe. I’ve heard today that should the miracle happen and Cronk is signed, Pearce will be moved on,

Even if he did sign I dont understand why Keary is going and not the dog fuker Pearce.

Keary outplayed Pearce all year and is only going to get better, Pearce is done and dusted and also Keary is a 6 which will compliment Cronk.

Pearce is a good club half. Keary is too hit and miss. Goes missing more than not and is a weak defender. Yes, he can do some good things but he will never be a top drawer half.

They don't care about loyalty they want a premiership and will spend whatever they have to to get it. Perfect example is when they got sbw. Buy him for a year win the comp that year
