Drinkwater Actually plays FB at an NRL team. There is no way Gus would sign him. He prefers people who have never played in a key role to start in the spine for the Bulldogs

Hayward - Never played Hooker at any level starts for the Bulldogs.
Salmon - Never played lock before the bulldogs. Starting Lock
Galvin - Never played HB at any level. starts for the Bulldogs at HB
Burton - 1 or 2 games at 5/8. Full time starter at 5/8 for the Bulldogs.
Tracey - Played 7,6 centre, wing maybe a game at FB. Now full time FB for the dogs.

So next time you think we are signing a specialist for the spine think again. Gus has other plans

Its pretty obvious (by its actions) that the club has no intention of buying quality spine players.
So the focus must be breeding them.
Not looking too flash so far.

We've basically had a few years now where we've been in a position to adjust our roster. We spent quite a while tied down by the bad decisions of previous boards with regards to spending. And during the recruitment phase last year we bought a young promising #1 and someone who's potentially a gun #1 if he can overcome bad luck with injury in Puru and Dykes. But people seem super keen to see the club jump back into a phase where we're tied up with new bad decisions.

Managing the salary cap isn't a matter of just jumping on in demand players and hoping that in 2 years we'll be able to shuffle the roster. There are potentially 16 other clubs who might've had a million or more set aside to throw at specific positions like Fullback. So maybe we've enquired about Drinkwater and thought 'sweet Jesus, who's offering him 1.2 million a season?'

I don't think the club was overly confident that this year was going to be the year we broke our premiership drought. Maybe in a couple of years Woods, Conti, Burton and Galvin will have shuffled themselves into a better quality halves pairing that'll offer us a premiership run. And I don't think they wanted to tie up ridiculous amounts of salary cap now which might've meant we can't adjust the roster moving forward. If Woods or Conti push into the starting team and kill it, we'll need to upgrade them and I'm sure the club want contingency money for that.

There's fans getting the shits when we don't splash huge money on every player they think would be an improvement on our current starting side. And while I'm impatient for more premierships, I know that if we mess up our salary cap by making the wrong impulse buys, it can lead to 5 or 6 years where we're a complete mess.
Fair points…. But on the other hand, I counted a total of Zero Clubs chasing Connor Tracey, Salmon, Kikau & good old Gus gave each them a decent contract to keep each of them for another 2yrs.

You can’t have it both ways!

Anyways…

Well good luck with that idea if that’s the “plan”

we have gus moneyball, remember lol?

Because he’s shit and not worth the money? We have more than enough players like that in this team.

Another 5/8

Like the bloke but doesn’t solve our issues at 7. Plus off an ACL which makes me nervous when his best asset was his speed
He told his manager he sees himself as a 7 and that’s where he wants to play. Apparently he’s in talks with a Sydney club, probably us or the Dragons

6. Galvin
7. Metcalf

Not too shabby

Why?
What's he proven that you want to throw the kitchen sink at?

It's this ideology of paying overs on "potential" that has fucked us for 20 years.....
Just a feeling about him. He is an amazing player with a few in front of him at the Cowboys.
However there is no way we would sign a fullback with lighting speed and ball skills. Hasn't even filled out yet so yes potential but FMD he is clearly a star.

Problem is what happens when Conti/Woods come good in a year or 2?

Would he move to 6 and Galvin 13?

Didn't realise he was in his late 20's

Dragons are a basket case
They have to in their current state.
Remember when Corey Waddel was considered a ‘great signing’ for the dogs? :disrelieved:

Not every player does negotiations through the media though. Certain managers seem incapable of doing deals without trying to publicly generate interest in their players. So as well as those three mentioned there's probably about 90% of players that negotiate deals that get offers from other clubs that the don't send you memos about.

Another bloke who THINKS he’s a halfback. There’s the problem right there. Please no you need an organiser in your halves. I like Metcalf and he’s better than both our halves but he’s not a 7.
