Where did our attack rank in every title season since 1980?

With Toby Sexton starting at halfback this season:

Attack = 25.6 ppg.
Defense = 14.7 ppg.

Over a whole season that would rank us:

Attack = 6th.
Defense = 1st.

We still play against 2 bad defenses so our attack stats can get better.

He had no Plan B against the short 10m 7m that game.
He was out-coached/out-reffed.

Or against Chambers rushing up on Morris every single play. Put a kick behind Chambers ffs.

Hasler never has a Plan B... he has one plan, he convinces himself that is the right plan and he sticks with it no matter what. His is reasonably successful because of the quality of his plan, not his ability to adapt. He is like a fish out of water when it doesn;t work. Remember the ole conversations about completions...mumble mumble completions too low nose whistle..

2012 was a title we should have won.

The Barba trick-shot was worked out before the GF and Hasler had no alternative. Moreover, he had no answer to Melbourne's up and in defence on the day.

Archer & Cummins let them get away with the endless wrestle to slow our play down and they were so far offside it was a farkin joke. There were more chicken wings than found at an Ingram’s chicken farm.

It was so bad that after that game the NRL started to really crack down on the Melbourne shit like the grapple, rolling pin, crusher etc. Plus they were still benefitting from the 2 contracts rort, lost only Inglis, the rest of $big cheats were still there in 2012.

Team First

People worrying about our attack need not worry.

In the 6 times that we won the title since 1980 only once did we have the best attack & that was in 2004.

No other time did we even have a top 3 attack.

1980: Attack = 5th & Defense = 6th.
1984: Attack = 4th & Defense = 1st.
1985: Attack = 6th & Defense = 2nd.
1988: Attack = 6th & Defense = 2nd.
1995: Attack = 11th & Defense = 5th.
2004: Attack = 1st & Defense = 3rd.

In 1995 we won the title from outside the top 4 & our first finals opponent were the Dragons. Will history repeat in 2024?
And we had cowboys as well in the last round of the season in 95, right?

That's some jack Gibson motivational shit right there. Those kids better listen up. Lol
Always been massive on defence. I'm trying to mold my boy into a JJ clone.

Majority of coaches pick man of the match based on scoring, I award it it for the best defender, plus 20 bucks with the MoM trophy motivates them too lol

In this 5 game streak we’d be averaging close to 30 a game. Not worried about attack at all. Errors/discipline is our biggest issue

I believe 2004 Dragons were the best defensive team too.

If I could give a fuck I would love to go back and dig up all the bullshit posts about our attack being the problem over the last 8 years or so..

Defence has always been our problem when we are not competing at the top. Our club and its successes have always been on the back of brutal effective defence. Even the “Entertainers” had the day in the sun because of our scrambling pack mentality.

Canterbury is famous and proud because of the legend of our hurtful defence. And thankfully history is repeating itself.

Agreed,
The 2014 season, we over achieved in the finals, much like our 1998 season.
I am never happy to lose any grandfinal.

But I can cop 1998 and 2014 alot better than I could the 2012 grandfinal.
I was so pissed

One of the jurnos at the time on the lead up to the grand final highlighted our block plays that had worked so well for us that year, and basically exposed technicalities.

So therefore on the biggest day of the year, we were reffed differently that we were the entire season.

And was to late to adjust.

And Bellamy knew this,

As someone else said, we were out coached and out reffed that game.

The1986 Grand Final loss burns me the most still but 2012 would be second. It was a miserable afternoon.

1979 and 1998 losses were easier to stomach because the team performed miracles to get to both deciders and we went into both with a ton of heart but no real expectations. 2014 was a similar story.

In 1994 we came up against a great Canberra side but we got off to a poor start and never recovered. It gets on the podium for our worst grand final efforts.

Attack in the last third of 2024 is a different bulldogs team.
You make a good point. Stats leading into finals that averaged out attack/defence in the last 10 games would be more accurate info.

There's heaps of teams (historically) who have had slow starts to the season and then caught fire in the back end of the season.

From memory the first few games of the season we scored only 8 points or less and obviously that's changed now...

Lately, we're scoring about 4 tries and letting in 2 or 3. So we must be averaging about 22PPG

I think this is what has attracted fringe players like Braith, Sonny and Willie Mason, Jammer and that crowd able to stand up in media and re own the Dogs. We always had good cross section in media but no one wanted a bar of it. Loving the D, its really who the dogs were and have returned.

Des just had no plan b for when the refs cracked down on those plays, barba the rat went missing, we just had no answers.

Historically we were never leading with attack as our main weapon - it was always defence. The one thing I do regret is that our attack did not flow like other teams, yet we did manage to win so many games with our grit.

I am hoping we turn on our attack and keep improving our defence so we get to put many teams to the sword without needing a pacemaker lol
Ryan instilled the defence under glossop it was attack attack attack 79-83 we were the entertainers 84 onwards we became dogs of war historically speaking
