Just had a thought. Sam Burgess basically retired because he was told he needed about 12 months for his shoulder to get stronger then have the operation and then recover from that so just under 2 years all up. Brad Fittler believes Sam may return in future also. Maybe the announcement was due to insurance payout etc. Sam is only 30 now. If he recovers, gets plates inserted etc it's possible he could return to the NRL at age 32 for a couple more years.
Just say he does., he'll have already been paid in advance for the 2 years off and possibly for 1 year of playing (I think he had 3 years of his contract to go). You would think he'd definitely play for Souths and repay them by playing for virtually nothing as far as a new contract goes. Will the NRL then allow him to be minimum wage as far as the salary cap goes ? I think there may be a slightly increased minimum wage for former rep players but anyway Souths would get a double advantage wouldn't they ?
