Supercoach Wayne Bennett is set to be parachuted in to lead the Queensland Maroons’ State of Origin campaign in a move guaranteed to set this year’s series alight.
The Queensland Rugby League is expected to officially announce the appointment on Thursday after Kevin Walters won the race to be the new Brisbane Broncos coach.
One of the most famous coaches in State of Origin history, Bennett has previously coached the Maroons from 1986 to 1988, in 1998 and last coached them from 2001 to 2003.
Newly appointed Broncos coach Walters will remain in a role working alongside Bennett but the current South Sydney coach will assume the role of Maroons head coach.
Bennett, Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga and Cowboys premiership-winner Paul Green were all considered for the Queensland head coaching position.
In 22 games in charge of the Maroons, Bennett has amassed 11 wins, 10 losses and one draw.
In terms of series victories, the supercoach has won five series out of a possible seven including the drawn series of 2002 when the Maroons retained the shield as 2001 winners.
