WARRIORS WAIT ON DOGS WINGER

NRL.com reports the Warriors are pushing Canterbury to release New Zealand back Dallin Watene-Zelezniak immediately so he can line up on the wing for the remainder of this season.

The Warriors last week released Ken Maumalo to the Tigers mid-season, and want Watene-Zelezniak to take his spot on the wing this year.

In doing so he would have to essentially surrender any chance of wearing a No.1 jumper, given the Warriors have earmarked teenager Reece Walsh as the long-term replacement for outgoing fullback Roger Tuivasa-Sheck.

I'll believe it if it happens. All this talk about DWZ leaving followed on from discussion on here that he's on a heavily back ended contract. So not sure if it's nonsense based on that idea or if it has merit. But I can't see us letting him go at this stage.

It definitely has merit mate. They dont continually run stories like this if there is no merit to it.

Thats not to say it will happen though. It looked over the line with the tigers but the clubs couldnt agree on the freight. Similar situation to Matt Lodge at Brisbane. He was being shopped to Newy but it fell over at the last hurdle.

The important thing to remember is that DWZ has a say in this as well. Even if the clubs agree on the freight he still has to agree to the move.

Make one thing very clear. The club wants DWZ to move on.
But not for his lack of contribution to the team. It's because of the silly contract he was given.
He is on huge money, and it badly affects the salary cap. Hoppa is in the same boat,
but his contribution to the team is the prime factor.

In any potential deal we’re in the box seat.
Warriors have already released Maumolo which is different to both Tigers and Ponies in the examples you gave. How desperate are the Warriors? They can pay more of the freight otherwise no or delayed deal.

DWZ himself shouldn’t be a major factor - he’s a Kiwi and the Warriors are allegedly offering him additional contract time beyond 2022 which the Dogs wouldn’t.

Many have criticised our club for alleged ‘weakness’ in letting players go - let’s see how they handle this one.

Well stop picking him then and he might go early to SL. Perfect place for Hoppa.

DWZ is a major factor. The deal with the tigers also fell through because he wanted additional contract time and they wouldnt give it to to him. So if you are right when you say the Warriors are offering him more contract time then that should seal the deal.

But the player himself still has a say.

It would be interesting what we would do if he did say no. When this has happened at other clubs they normally tell the player he will be in reserve grade if he doesnt take the deal.

With DWZ being suddenly "injured" and Maumolo being released I'd be shocked if the terms haven't already been agreed to last week and its just a matter of time till its official.

I wasn’t suggesting he can he forced out the door, although it seems Maumolo wasn’t the one driving the move to the Tigers either. As I’ve heard it, Warriors are willing to offer DWZ terms until the end of 2023, so 12 months longer than his current deal, but I haven’t seen this absolutely confirmed either.

If that’s the case why delay any announcement?
Maumolo was only on the market for about 3 days…
