In 1967 (it could have been 1968?) I attended a game with my father at Belmore, sitting next to the player's box, where before half time Kevin Ryan (Captain Coach) pulled the team off the field. We were getting hammered, really hammered, in the penalties and the ref kept waving him away like an Under 10's player. Anyone who knows KL (lawyer, barrister and MP) will tell you, he didn't appreciate being treated like a primary school kid. The crowd was incensed and back in those days we were allowed onto the field straight after the game and it felt like the crowd wasn't going to wait for the whistle. Obviously it created quite a stir at the time, but I haven't been able to find any news articles on it on line.

I have a vague recollection that the referee was Keith Page, but I could be wrong, and for the life of me I can't remember who we were playing. So Kennelers with long memories, please fill in the gaps.

Vaguest of memories it was Keith Page.
I recall a game or an incident in a North Sydney game when the North side did actually walk off - 1970 i think - wasnt at the game but listening on the radio.

Yep, that was us playing the Bears at Belmore Oval, I was there, I recall Keith Page was the referee involved again. Ken Irvine was sent off by Page for back chat. Then a group of players walked off and Roy Francis. who was the Bear's coach. and their Captain (name avoids me) talked them back on.

Page had a well deserved reputation for talking down to players, treating them like infants. He was dropped the next weekend if I remember rightly.

Separate occurrences, same ref, the Bears walk off was a couple of years later though. Hence why I think 1967/68 and KR had a running dispute with Page up close to half time. Vague memory, it may have been that the KR refused to bring the team back out after oranges.

Sorry can't remember, started following the club that year but it was after the club knocked St George out of the comp.

Not sure about the 1968 incident but the 1970 incident with Ken Irvine and North's was definitely Keith Page. Irvine led a walk off at the behest of North's coach Roy Francis. John McDonell who played for us later in his career had been sent off earlier so North's had 11 men when Irvine got his marching orders for disputing the McDonell send off. They very nearly beat us and would have if it wasn't for some Les John's Magic.

Just as an aside I once had Keith Page in my group playing golf at the now defunct East Hills course. I asked him for some refereeing tips on scrums and he virtually brushed me aside. Probably the most arrogant person I have ever come across and that includes a certain referee who presided over the 89 GF. Most golfers are nice people. Didn't find KP that nice.

1968 - vs Parramatta, where both Kevin Ryan and Barry Smith were marched by Keith Page resulting in him requiring a police escort?

Great story TT. My Dad always said Kevin Ryan was one of the toughest players he had ever seen including when he was at the Dragons. Kevin Ryan was one of the foundations of the greatest era of the Club's history from 70's, 80's, 90's and early 2000's. Those days are becoming a distant memory and don't see signs of them re- emerging. Again thanks TT for the story.
