if we had the same gun culture and firearms laws in this country our cops would be no different, if you faced the very real prospect of being shot everyday you turned up to work you would quickly develop a shoot first ask questions later mentality as a survival mechanism. Blaming frontline police for the US social issues is hilarious, The NRA has killed and continues to kill hundreds of thousands..
It kinda highlights all their social problems from every angle and every interest group.

All sides are wired for the fight/fright response with the way the gun situation is over there.

Kids frightened to go to school for fear of a mass shooting etc.

The Aussie lady shot by the cop as she approached their car in her PJ's.

It would be just so so bad if it ever got anything like that level of law and order breakdown here.

Geez big call on GOAT Howard lol. Can't go that hard with that glowing enendorsement but he sure did the courageous thing with gun control before it got way out of hand :grinning:

Fair enough, but put the political bullshit to the side for a minute, How many lives do you think have been saved since those reforms where introduced?

Hard to say accurately and I really don't think we would have the constant mass shooting occurrences USA have, but most certainly lives have been saved with his, and Tim Fischer's, decision with the buy back and stricter gun controls. We should all be grateful the legislation was passed through Parliament by all sides.

Weapons of Mass Destruction and Children Overboard are negatives to his legacy IMO but due respect for his legacy of gun control.

You are right @maroondog72
Some will never give credit where it’s due or backhanded compliments but what John Howard did was one of the most important achievements in Australia’s history.
There are unfortunately a lot of Martin Bryants out there and so many innocent lives have been saved by our gun reforms

@maroondog72. and I were discussing whether Howard was the GOAT PM (and various for and against) ..something quite apart from the gun laws which we agreed on as part of Howards kudos,.... until 2 other continual bleaters decided to include their drivel into the discussion as per their usual outraged payback...which was supposed to stop by order of Mods but they just can't help putting in their childish jibes.

We should all go to the Australian political threads to discuss US politics.

Precisely, because other political dribble had to be introduced when the topic was strictly gun control. I care less who did it (it happened to be Howard) but the fact we haven’t had a mass slaughter since Port Arthur is testament to our gun laws. America though…
Great work all those years ago by our government to bring in gun control.
As a nation we can basically not live in constant fear, seeing in particular all those poor kids being set upon and having their lives cut short makes me sick.
