TODD Carney will abandon nights out for the remainder of his stay in Atherton after being bashed at the weekend.

The exiled NRL star was left with a black eye and bruises when about half a dozen men pounced on him in a local street about 2am on Sunday.

Carney last night told The Daily Telegraph the attack occurred as he left a 21st birthday party with older sister Krysten and her husband, who both travelled from Goulburn to watch the former Raider play for North Queensland local side Atherton Roosters just hours earlier.

It is understood one of the group took exception to a woman approaching Carney at the party.

"A few guys were having a go at me, trying to get me to fight," the 22-year-old said. "I made up my mind to leave and took my sister with me. But they followed us out the front. I was just walking down the road when they pounced on me.

"One of them hit me in the eye straight away and I couldn't really see.

"All I could do was pull my head in close and try to stay on my feet.

"Had I fallen down I reckon they would've stuck the boot in. There was at least six of them - maybe more. In the end, I'm very lucky to have escaped with only a black eye."

Nearby police broke up the scuffle and arrested several men. Detectives yesterday charged four men - aged 19, 21, 23 and 25 - with public nuisance. They will face court on June 2.

Carney, however, revealed he preferred no charges were laid or any "fuss" about the incident. "I was a bit shaken up on Sunday by it, but I'm OK now," he said.

"I've copped a bit of stick in Goulburn before but nothing like this.

"The bad thing was my sister had to watch it happen and she just couldn't do anything.

"I'd just like to leave it in the past and get on with things.

"The locals have been great since I arrived and from what I can gather these blokes weren't from Atherton."

But despite his determination to move on, Carney has vowed not to socialise outside the Barron Valley Hotel, where he has worked and slept since arriving in Atherton last month. Carney now regrets moving on to the Atherton Stump Hotel, where the 21st party was held.

"I'm just going to stay at Barron Valley from now on," he said.

"When the other boys move on, I'll just stay back.

"It's just not worth it."

Hotel owner Mick Nasser agreed that Carney's best option was to stay put.

"I said to him you can't afford to go to another venue because there are fools out there. They are the minority in the community and they'll have a cheap shot if they can.

"All the girls want him and all the smart arses want to punch him," Nasser said.

Carney will return from Atherton once his NRL future is finalised. It is expected that a four-year deal with the Sydney Roosters will be announced soon.

With this being Carney you just really don't know what the real story is and what the motivations behind the attack were. You don't give him the benefit of the doubt. He's a bit like the boy who cried wolf.

Carney - abandon nights out? - I highly doubt it. He still gets himself into sht in little Atherton.

There was 6 of them - no, only one laid you out Carney. The others that were arrested were in hysterical fits of laughter & wouldn't move along.
