Is the Disneyland classic Snow White next in line to face cancel culture’s wrath?

It seems so, after a backlash over a revamped Snow White ride at Disneyland.

The theme park in California reopened on Friday after a long COVID lockdown, but not everyone was celebrating.

Some critics are arguing for the removal of the famous “true love’s kiss” scene in the beloved fable, which shows the Prince kissing Snow White while she is in a cursed trance.

The Prince’s kiss breaks the curse, bringing her back to life.

But some have argued that this aspect of the tale is problematic because she is unable to consent to the kiss.

An article reviewing the ride for SFGate says the messaging undermines lessons about consent.

“The new grand finale of Snow White’s Enchanted Wish is the moment when the Prince finds Snow White asleep under the Evil Queen’s spell and gives her ‘true love’s kiss’ to release her from the enchantment,” the reviewer writes.

“A kiss he gives to her without her consent, while she’s asleep, which cannot possibly be true love if only one person knows it’s happening.

“Haven’t we already agreed that consent in early Disney movies is a major issue?

“That teaching kids that kissing, when it hasn’t been established if both parties are willing to engage, is not OK?

“It’s hard to understand why the Disneyland of 2021 would choose to add a scene with such old-fashioned ideas of what a man is allowed to do to a woman, especially given the company’s current emphasis on removing problematic scenes from rides like Jungle Cruise and Splash Mountain.

“Why not re-imagine an ending in keeping with the spirit of the movie and Snow White’s place in the Disney canon, but that avoids this problem?”

The reviewer concludes by reminding people that they should look at Snow White as an engaging fairy tale, “not a life lesson.”

It’s not the first time the scene has come under fire.

In 2018, a professor at Osaka University in Japan compared the kissing of a sleeping woman to sexual assault on an unconscious person.

Feminist academic Kazue Mata said stories like Snow White and Sleeping Beauty could be construed as “promoting sexual violence.”

But still. Its pretty creepy. Imagine a man who claimed to be a prince, broke into your mother's house. And kissed her whilst she was sleeping.....

Yeah but it's just a story man. Imagine a chick throwing down her hair from a tower for a prince to climb up. Today, this would be classified as violence against women.

It’s a German fairytale published in 1812, a time when writers and artists had true freedom of artist expression.

For more than 150+ years, it was a timeless masterpiece and even children recognised that Snow White was not to be taken literally, it was to be taken figuratively.

The fact we now have adults who find Snow White ‘creepy’ or ‘offensive’ says a lot about the emotional maturity of some adults in 2021.

I'm not going to do it. But I was tempted to try creating an alternate account called Bill Cosby and dislike the opening post in this thread just for the giggles.
