The Wests Tigers have emerged as a left-field contender to sign ex-NSW and Australian flyer Nick Cotric.

Fox Sports has learned Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire and director of football Tim Sheens met with the Canterbury-Bankstown outside back over the weekend and remain in negotiations to orchestrate an immediate release.

Initially the Canberra Raiders were the early favourites for Cotric to return to the national capital but the Tigers interest is now gaining serious momentum.

Tigers director of football Tim Sheens confirmed the club was in negotiations with Cotric’s agent Sam Ayoub.

“It’s certainly nowhere near being done but we’ve met with the lad and Madge likes what he could add to the roster,” Sheens said.

“We’re not the only club at the table so we’ll just have to let it take its course and see how it plays out.”

Tigers recruitment boss Warren McDonnell has spoken to Bulldogs general manager Phil Gould about the prospect of Cotric switching to Concord.

Cotric, 23, joined Canterbury-Bankstown in November of 2020 and has two years remaining on a deal believed to be worth around $650,000-a-season.

But with the Bulldogs looking to reshape the club’s roster for 2023 and beyond the ex-NSW and Australian winger has been given permission to negotiate with rival clubs.

The Canberra Raiders are still in the equation but with the Tigers armed with a $1 million war chest and three spots available in the club’s top 30 for 2022 there’s a view they could blow the Raiders out of the water.

The Tigers are still looking to bolster the club’s outside backs and Sheens confirmed the club likes the appeal of Cotric being able to play in the centres, fullback or wing.

“We’ve obviously got Daine Laurie coming back from injury and the good thing with Nick is he grew up playing fullback, has also played on the wing and can play in the centres,” the Tigers director of football said.

“So from that point of view he could provide us with depth in a number of positions.”

The Tigers outside back stocks at present consist of wingers David Nofoaluma and Ken Maumalo, centres Tommy Talau, James Roberts and Oliver Gildart and fullback Laurie.

Both highly-regarded young guns Talau and Adam Doueihi are expected to miss the beginning of 2022 after sustaining ACL injuries at the end of last season.

With quotes from Sheens confirming talks with Cotric and all the smoke about him being on the move for several months now, it looks like it's only a matter of time til he's released from his contract. The only question is how much of his deal another club will pay..

The Tigers will probably be willing to pay more of Cotric's salary compared to the Raiders. I'm not sure Cotric will want to go there tho... I think we'll be fine without Cotric (Alamoti coming through, Naden can play wing, Okunbor and Burns can also do a job) but he's our 2nd best winger and I'd like to see him in a competitive team (22/23 roster), which doesn't look like is going to happen unfortunately.

That’s shit. If we don’t get Mahoney or kikau over now why?
Gus is probably thinking they can front load some contracts this season, possibly extend Burton and some youngsters while getting more cap space next season for other players. It also gives us flexibility when someone else becomes available mid season.

Maybe they're thinking if they don't move him now when there's this much interest, then there might not be that many clubs interested in taking him at that price next season.

Cotric is a good winger when fit, but he's hardly irreplaceable and not worth what he's on. It's probably a sign that they're confident Alamoti can step in and contribute straight away.. We'd still have Fox and Naden on the wings.

Cotric won’t win you games. We have heaps of options to cover his position. He’s average.
He’s not average at all mate. He’s a quality player.

He was surrounded by trash.

If they don’t get kikau or Mahoney over earlier then keep him and play the season and see how he goes with quality around him.

Then you have more leverage next year with 1 year left and a player with no doubt a far better season behind him.

That’s pretty crap for nicky if thats the case, signing a decent contract for himself and going to club that was struggling to sign players in an underperforming team to 12 months later being shopped, unless he wanted a release its pretty shit for canterbury to do that to him, just like the coach he deserves to perform in a better team to show his talent.
Id rather nicky stay than us get kikau.

I personally think canterbury cant stay quiet on this one, we need to know the reasons ,it’s allready leaving a shit stain on things .

Mate let’s not play it down to make us feel better.

Cotric on the market will attract interest 100%.

The bloke is 23 and quality.

If he was on market next season with 1 year left he would likely be keen to secure his future and any club we had to “chip in” for would be 1 season.

He will do ALOT better with the roster for 22 than 21s pathetic excuse of a squad.

The only reason it makes any sense is like others mentioned maybe kikau trying the kit on is a plan ahead for 22 and cotric is how we do it. Who knows.

I have no doubt we can offload cotric and Allen for 23 especially with the dolphins and Wayne lurking for Allen (probz willing to move up north as a Queenslander) cotric might now be though again I’m Sure he would attract tons of interest.

I can't see the Panthers releasing Kikau early, especially with the bad blood between the clubs and them losing Capewell.

I'm not denying that Cotric is a good winger. But if we can get 650k of cap space to use to extend our best juniors and lock up Burton long term while saving money for someone that becomes available mid season, then that's just good cap management.

Either Cotric or Thompson was always likely to be moved on. I'd rather it was Cotric than Thompson as Thompson is far more important to the team and you can get solid production out of a cheaper outside back like Schoupp last season and Alamoti next season.
