Preliminary scans have cleared North Queensland captain Johnathan Thurston of a break in his ankle but an MRI later on Saturday is almost certain to determine he's out for the rest of the NRL season anyway.

The Queensland and Test halfback was carried from the field in agony 18 minutes into the Cowboys' 34-26 loss to Brisbane at Dairy Farmers Stadium.

Team medical staff suspected ligament damage, but Thurston `heard a snap' which sparked fears of a break in the joint.

Coach Neil Henry said the fact he had been cleared of a break was small solace, with substantial ligament damage almost certain to rule him out for the rest of the 2010 campaign.

"He's seen our physio Steve Sartori this morning and had the x-ray which shows there is no break," Henry said.

"The MRI scan will show the extent of the ligament damage.

"His foot's quite swollen and he's wearing a (moon) boot.

"There will be some ligament damage.

"If you rupture a couple of ligaments it can be as bad as a break and you're still out for six to eight weeks."

The latest injury blow comes after Thurston was twice rested this season for shoulder troubles and he has been playing through pain from nerve damage in his feet in recent weeks.

Should the MRI deliver the worst case scenario, it is highly likely he will have surgery to fix that damage which would raise a question mark over his availability for the end of season Four Nations tournament against England, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

"It's showing no broken bones so we'll just have to see, if he's got substantial ligament damage it will be four to six weeks regardless and he'll be out for the season," Henry said.

"If he's out for the season and he's going to get a bit of surgery on those nerves, we'll probably get that done as well.

"I had a quick chat with him and he's not in terrible spirits.

"He's very disappointed, obviously coming off at the 18 minute mark has been a real disappointment for him but you can't do too much about that."

In better news for the Cowboys, the rest of the casualty ward is not as bad, with Dally M prop of the year candidate Matt Scott (hamstring) and Luke O'Donnell (hyper-extended knee) firming to be fit to play in round 23.

`"(Scott) has got a bit of a hamstring tear but he's OK,'' Henry said.

"I was with (O'Donnell), we just had a promotion at the leagues club, he's icing the knee and he seems to think he'll be OK.

"He's a bit sore but it should settle down.

"We've got the extra day's turnaround to Saturday night (against the Titans) as well.

Good news for us if we can come away with a win tomorrow.

Thurston at the Cowboys IMO is a one of the biggest waste.

This will make the final rounds tough for the team and their fans.

+1 to that.
He's such a good player waste in such a horrible team/club.

This years final series is going to be missing a lot of big name players - Thurston, Inglis, Hayne, Smith, Slater etc.

Hasnt happened in a while and I bet the NRL are a bit worried about it too.

True, however there are still people like Lockyer, Marshall, Folou, Carney, Prince, Watmough.
