Heinze set for OT exit?

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Gabriel Heinze could soon be heading for the Old Trafford exit door after indicating his desire to call time on his Reds' career.

The Argentine defender has been linked with moves to Real Madrid and Liverpool in recent weeks and the United boss revealed the defender is almost certain to leave.

"Gaby's agent has advised us that he wants to move on," explained Sir Alex at a press conference in Tokyo. "I am not too sure about that and we do not have a concrete offer from any particular club.

"But there is some momentum regarding the player's next move in terms of through his agent, even if nothing is close at this moment in time."

Heinze was on the losing side in the Copa America final on Sunday as Argentina went down 3-0 to Brazil.

Reds' trio nearing comeback

United have been boosted by the news that long term injury trio Gary Neville, Louis Saha and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should all be back in training next month.

Neville has been out of action since 17 March will an ankle problem, while the two strikers have both undergone knee surgery over the summer.

Although absent from United's four-game Asia tour, Sir Alex has hinted that the trio could yet feature in United's domestic pre-season programme on their return from the Far East.

"Gary Neville will be joining in training with us when we get back, I am confident about that," confirmed the Reds' boss. "Same with Ole, if not, definitely the week afterwards.

"Louis Saha is looking at the middle of August, so the situation is not so bad.

"We've got quite a hectic spell [of games] when we return to the UK, but those later matches will be great for the likes of Gary, Ole, possibly Louis and Anderson who will all need games. That period will be of great benefit for us.

"The big disappointments are Ji-sung Park [out until December or January] and Ben Foster, who is out until March. His injury was a surprising one - he did his cruciate in his last game for Watford. But hopefully with the squad we have this season we will be able to cope.

"We've brought the new players in and the young lads who went out on loan last season are back with us as well. We're pleased about that because they all did very well during their spells away. That all adds to the strength of the group."

Boss to field full strength side

Sir Alex Ferguson will field a full strength side for United's first Asia tour match against Urawa Reds Diamonds in Tokyo.

The Reds kick-off their pre-season campaign at Saitama Stadium on Tuesday evening local time - 11:05 BST - but fans may have to wait a little longer to see new signings Owen Hargreaves and Nani in action after the United boss confirmed both are suffering with slight knocks.

"I will field a strong team," he confirmed at his pre-match press conference. "It is possible Nani won't play because he is still carrying an injury from the European Under-21 Championships with Portugal. He is a big doubt.

"There is a slight doubt over Owen Hargreaves but hopefully he'll be ready for the game in Korea. Other than that I will have the strongest squad available to me.

"Edwin will be in goal. Wes Brown, Rio, Vidic and Patrice will play at the back. Carrick and Scholes will be in midfield. Ronaldo, Giggs and Rooney will all play; I've just got to decide about one of the wide positions, possibly Darren Fletcher might step in.

"It'll be more or less the side we depended on last season. They'll probably play for just over an hour, then we'll make changes. That'll be the case during the rest of the tour; we'll mix the bunch up so they all get some decent mileage in before we head home."

The United boss was keen to acknowledge the impressive standard of Japanese football and insists the Reds will need to work hard for a result against their opening game opponents.

"I see quite a lot of Japanese football on TV. The quality has improved tremendously," he declared. "Hopefully, we can handle it on Tuesday.

"We played Urawa Red Diamonds two years ago, the stadium was fantastic and the condition of the pitch was marvellous. We had a particularly hard game against Urawa Red Diamonds two years ago and I am expecting exactly the same this time."

Tevez deal close, says Gill

United chief executive David Gill says the Reds are working round the clock to sort out a deal to bring Carlos Tevez to Old Trafford.
Gill says the situation is "overly complicated", but insists that United remain confident of bringing the 23-year-old West Ham forward to Manchester in "the next week or so".
“We are working on it and clearly it’s complicated - overly complicated in my humble opinion,” he told Reuters news agency.
“And we are working, effectively, with four other parties in order to sort it out: the player, West Ham, the companies who own his economic rights and the Premier League.
“The process is going on as we speak. The player is coming over to Manchester and will have a medical some time this week.
"Obviously the deal is subject to sorting out all the paperwork, but we’re very confident that that can be achieved in the course of the next week or so.”
Tevez was on the losing team as Argentina crashed to a 3-0 defeat against Brazil in the Copa America final on Sunday. But, now that the tournament is over, it frees him up to hopefully finalise a move.

Carlos Tevez Man Utd medical 'this week'

By Telegraph Online and agencies

Last Updated: 3:56pm BST 16/07/2007

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has said that Carlos Tevez will have his medical at Old Trafford this week.

Gill, who said that completing the signing of the Argentina striker is proving 'over-complicated', expects to have wrapped up a deal "in the next week or so".
Tevez finished on the losing side in last night's Copa America final as Brazil beat Argentina 3-0, but will now fly to Manchester for a medical which would normally mark the move from West Ham.
However, with the Premier League insisting that any deal must be done directly between United and West Ham rather than Kia Joorabchian, who owns Tevez's economic rights, the move is far from complete.
United's legal expert Maurice Watkins is in England to help resolve the dispute while the rest of the United party have landed in Tokyo for the start of the club's four-match tour to the Far East.
Gill said: "In my opinion, it has become over-complicated. Effectively, we are trying to work with four parties: the player, West Ham, the company who own Carlos' economic rights and the Premier League in order to sort it out.
"The process is ongoing. The player will have a medical at some point this week, then we will take it from there.
"We still have to sort out the paperwork but we are confident that can be achieved in the course of the next week or so."
Tevez is still unlikely to join his new team-mates until they return to England ahead of the Aug 1 friendly with Inter Milan at Old Trafford.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson will be without South Korean midfielder Park Ji-sung, possibly action until January, after a knee operation.
Park, 26, will make a public appearance when United land in Seoul on Wednesday.
"He will not be available until December or January," Ferguson said. "It is very disappointing news but hopefully we have the squad to cover injuries this year."
Of United's other current injuries, Ferguson said that captain Gary Neville and striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should be back in training ahead of the season-opener against Reading on Aug 12.
Louis Saha could have to wait until mid-August before returning to training. However, Gabriel Heinze appears to have played his last game for the club.
The full-back, who played alongside Tevez for Argentina in Venezuela last night, has expressed a desire to leave Old Trafford, with Liverpool among those showing an interest. It remains highly unlikely Heinze will be allowed to move to Anfield, but Ferguson seems resigned to the defender's exit.
"Gaby's agent has advised us that he wants to move on," Ferguson said. "I am not too sure about that and we do not have a concrete offer from any particular club. But there is some momentum regarding the player's next move in terms of through his agent, even if nothing is close at this moment in time."
The weather could overshadow the first leg of United's tour after Tokyo bore the brunt of incessant rainstorms, with five people killed and over 40,000 evacuated. Almost 650 flights in and out of the country were cancelled due to the battering winds.
United launch their tour against Urawa in Saitama before playing FC Seoul in South Korea on Friday and then travelling to Macau to take on Chinese team Shenzhen FC on July 23.
Having been forced to cancel a fixture against a Malaysian XI in Kuala Lumpur on July 27 as a result of Fifa protests against the fixture clashing with the country's joint-hosting of the Asian Cup, United wrap up their tour against Guangzhou Pharmaceutical in China on the same date.
Tour squad
Van der Sar, Kuszczak, Heaton; O'Shea, Ferdinand, Vidic, Silvestre, Evra, Brown, Evans, Simpson, Bardsley; Hargreaves, Nani, Ronaldo, Scholes, Giggs, Carrick, Fletcher, Martin, Gibson, Eagles; Rooney, Smith.

Anderson

Dubbed the new Ronaldinho, Brazilian wonder kid Anderson completed his move to Old Trafford in July 2007.

There is a striking resemblance between Anderson and international superstar Ronaldinho, not only in terms of looks. Like Barcelona's attacking wizard, Anderson is incredibly skilful and his array of talent will surely dazzle the Premiership.

Both Anderson and Ronaldinho started their careers at Gremio in Brazil. Anderson (or Anderson Luis de Abreu Oliveira to give his full name) joined the Porto Alegre club at the age of just five.

He made his first appearance for Gremio in 2004, aged just 16 but with his club side in the Brazilian second tier it was internationally where Anderson made his name.

He shone with Brazil at the 2005 South American U-17 Championship and 2005 U-17 World Cup, winning the Adidas Golden Ball for most valuable player.

An Anderson wonder goal for Gremio against Nautico in November 2005 earned a 1-0 win and promotion back to the top flight. That goal and his impressive showing for Brazil's young side persuaded FC Porto to sign Anderson in January 2006.

He continued his promising displays at Porto. He won many honours including the Portuguese Championship in 2005/06 and 2006/07, although his progress was hampered by a broken leg causing him to miss much of last season.

Sir Alex Ferguson and his right hand man Carlos Queiroz were clearly impressed and fought off interest from Barcelona to get their man. Anderson will battle with fellow new signing Nani, Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs for a place in the starting line-up. His favourite position is wide left but he has also featured in central midfield.

On the international front, Anderson earned his first call up to the Brazilian senior squad in the summer of 2007 and featured in the team’s Copa America campaign.

Anderson has already earned many plaudits, none more so than from Mario Zagallo, the World Cup-winning player and manager.

"Everything suggests he is going to be a superstar, a prodigy, as he has undisputable quality," he said.

If Anderson lives up to the expectations, Premiership and European defenders will be having many sleepless nights working out ways to deal with his trickery

Nani

Highly rated Portuguese winger Luís Carlos Almeida da Cunha ("Nani") will aim to emulate the achievements of compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo when he starts his Old Trafford career in earnest.

Nani officially joined United in July 2007 for an undisclosed fee from Sporting Lisbon after being tracked for some time by Sir Alex Ferguson and his scouting staff.

After making his Sporting Lisbon debut at the age of 18, Nani featured 29 times in the league for Sporting in 2006-07, scoring five times. During his time at Sporting he also featured in the Champions League before winning the 2007 Portuguese Cup.

He played for Portugal during the European Under 21 Championship in Holland during the 2007 close season. The Cape Verde Islands born player also earned five caps for the senior side prior to his move to United, scoring on his debut against Denmark in September 2006.

Primarily a left sided player, Nani can also play in numerous other attacking positions.

There are obvious similarities between Ronaldo and Nani. And Nani is tipped to match the standards of 2006-07's PFA Player of the Year.

"He (Nani) is an amazing player, he's an amazing kid as well, he works very hard and has got a big heart," said Portuguese Under 21 team mate Ricardo Vaz Te. "He got a gift from god which is his talent obviously."

Portugal assistant coach Paulo Sousa is another who is backing Nani to be successful in England. "Nani is very explosive and very strong. He's fast and is going to be a great signing for United," he said. "I think that in the next five or 10 years, he and Cristiano Ronaldo can become the best players in the world."

Nani's move to Old Trafford undoubtedly had something to do with assistant boss Carlos Queiroz. Quieroz is credited with helping Ronaldo settle and improve his game, and he is expected to help out Nani too.

Ronaldo has also promised to help Nani. “I really hope he has the same success as me, or even more, because he’s got the ability to do this," he said. "He’s joining the right club to evolve as a player and as a person.”

Nani is also famed in Portugal for a trademark goal celebration. His back flips graced the pages of the Portuguese tabloids while at Sporting, and United fans will be looking forward to seeing such celebrations many times during the coming seasons.

Owen Hargraves

In his own words, it was “possibly the longest-running transfer saga” in football. But after a several months of prolonged pursuit, United finally signed Owen Hargreaves from Bayern Munich in May 2007.

The Canadian-born, England international midfielder’s stock has risen dramatically in the past year. During the World Cup, one newspaper reported that he was “a shock £7million target” for Sir Alex. His eventual fee was closer to £17million when the transfer finally went through, and Hargreaves had become one of European football’s most highly-thought of defensive midfielders.

Born and raised in Calgary, Canada, where his parents moved from England in the early eighties, Owen left for Germany aged 16 to join Bayern Munich.

After earning his stripes in their youth ranks, a 19-year-old Hargreaves made the step up to first-team football in August 2000 in what was a highly successful season as Bayern claimed the Bundesliga title and Champions League crown. In the semi final against Real Madrid Hargreaves showed he could hold his own against Madrid's "galacticos", and remains one of only two English players to win the European Cup with a non-English club - the other being Steve McManaman.

The following season saw Hargreaves establish himself as a regular and key member of Bayern's first-team and witnessed his breakthrough at international level. Hargreaves was eligible for any one of the home nations, as well as Canada, and, had he delayed his decision, Germany under residency rules. He plumped for England, and after several impressive Under-21 displays, he was called into the senior squad in 2001.

Initially a squad player, it took until the 2006 World Cup in Germany for Hargreaves to truly be seen as a key man. In fact, he was booed in their opening match of the tournament, but went on to be named Man of
the Match in the quarter final defeat to Portugal and was voted England Player of the Year in January 2007.

Not only will Hargreaves add another dimension to United’s midfield with his determined, energetic and enthusiastic style, the 26-year-old also has vast experience. A Champions League winner in 2001 and four-time Bundesliga champion with Bayern, Hargreaves has also experienced two World Cups and a European Championships with England. Partnering Paul Scholes or Michael Carrick – or indeed both – gives a well-balanced feel to United’s engine room.

Gerard Piqué

Gerard Piqué arrived at United in the summer of 2004 with great promise and potential. Highly-regarded at his former hometown club Barcelona where he was nominated as the Catalonia Player of the Year, Piqué opted to relocate to Old Trafford in search of first team chances.

United’s coaches were so impressed with the way Piqué settled in that he was handed an earlier-than-expected senior debut as a substitute for John O’Shea during the Reds’ Carling Cup trip to Crewe. Piqué's 23-minute cameo in the 3-0 victory came barely a week after his first appearance for the Reserves. He looked instantly at ease alongside Wes Brown in the centre of defence, twice snuffing out the threat of then-Crewe striker Dean Ashton.

He made two further first team outings during the 2004/05 campaign, as a sub for Brown in the Reds' 3-0 Champions League defeat away at Fenerbahce and as a starter in the goalless FA Cup stalemate against Exeter at Old Trafford. The young Catalan was also an integral part of the club’s quadruple-winning Reserve side, chipping in with two goals in 24 appearances. Piqué won yet more silverware in his second season at Old Trafford as he helped the Reserves claim the Treble. He was a regular fixture in Rene Meulensteen’s side, playing 26 times and firing two goals.

The Spanish defender made his Premiership debut at the Stadium of Light in October 2005 as United ran out 3-1 winners over Sunderland. He featured in six more league and Cup matches during the remainder of the 2005/06 season including an impressive display at right-back in his first Premiership start against West Ham at OT in March 2006.

With so many senior contenders vying for a regular berth in the Reds' defence, Sir Alex Ferguson decided to send Pique on loan for the entire 2006/07 campaign. He joined Real Zaragoza in La Liga and although opportunities weren't immediately forthcoming, Gerard soon had an impact on the first team and became a regular starter.

Although he scored on his debut at Villarreal and again against Gimnastic and hometown club Barcelona, it was Pique's impressive defensive displays which caught the eye as Zaragoza finished a superb season with a UEFA Cup slot.

Such was Pique's impact at La Romareda that the Spaniards enquired about a permanent transfer for the youngster. However, Sir Alex Ferguson sees his future at United.

Giuseppe Rossi

He may be one of the smallest members of the first team squad, but big things lie ahead for Giuseppe Rossi.

The American-born Italian striker joined United from Serie A side Parma in July 2004. He wasted little time making his mark for the Reserves, netting 13 times in his first 19 starts. He also bagged a further five goals in eight Pontin’s League games and helped the Reserves claim an unprecedented Quadruple in his first season.

Giuseppe’s impressive displays resulted in a call-up to the senior squad in November 2004 just two weeks after signing professional forms with the club. Sir Alex handed Rossi the number 42 shirt and named him on the bench for United’s Carling Cup fourth round clash with Crystal Palace at Old Trafford. Rossi made his Reds’ bow five minutes from time in the 2-0 victory as a substitute for David Bellion.

His involvement with the first team became a more frequent occurrence during the 2005/06 season, as did his goals for the Reserves. He netted an incredible 30 times in as many games as the Reds' second string sealed the Treble (League title, Manchester Senior Cup and Reserve Shield).

The Italian Under 21 international notched four goals in 12 first-team appearances, including his first Premiership strike just nine minutes into his debut at Sunderland. A forward in the mould of Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney, Giuseppe Rossi has both the ability and the attitude to become a top player at Old Trafford in the near future. A new deal until 2010 suggests the club are confident he will fulfil his potential.

Rossi spent the entire 2006/07 season away from Old Trafford in two very different loan deals. The first half of the campaign was a frustrating time at Newcastle United, in which just five starts yielded one goal, before his season took off in Italy.

Four months at relegation-haunted Parma in Serie A gave Giuseppe a regular platform to display his talents, and he took the opportunity with typical style. A debut-day strike against Torino provided a dream start for Rossi, who went on to bag a further eight goals - all of which grabbed vital wins or draws as Claudio Ranieri's side made a sprint finish to the season.

Giuseppe's form with Parma earned him international recognition with the Italian U21 team, and the little man is showing just why he is attracting such big hype around Old Trafford.

Hammers block Tevez Man Utd medical

Manchester United's hopes of Carlos Tevez undergoing a medical on Wednesday are in limbo after they failed to secure permission for the tests from West Ham.

The Argentina striker was due to fly in to Manchester tonight and United had been preparing to put the 23-year-old to go through a series of fitness and medical checks.

However, one club is not allowed to give a player a medical unless his current club agree and although United have made West Ham aware of their wishes, the London side will not give formal permission for a medical until they have been made - and accepted - an offer.

West Ham remain adamant they hold Tevez's registration, that he is contracted to them for another three years and that they have unilaterally terminated all third-party agreements with Tevez's representative Kia Joorabchian.

Joorabchian maintains his company Media Sports Investments (MSI) own the economic rights to the player, who has already agreed personal terms with Manchester United.

United chief executive David Gill, who is in the Far East on the club's tour, insisted yesterday a medical would take place this week but said the deal had become 'over-complicated'.

Gill said: 'Effectively, we are trying to work with four parties - the player, West Ham, the company who own Carlos' economic rights and the Premier League - in order to sort it out.

'The process is ongoing. The player will have a medical at some point this week, then we will take it from there.

'We still have to sort out the paperwork but we are confident that can be achieved in the course of the next week or so.'

United are understood to have agreed an initial loan deal for Tevez with a view to a permanent transfer, a similar deal to that which took Javier Mascherano from West Ham to Liverpool in January.

That hit a stumbling block however because in January, West Ham cancelled Mascherano's registration.

The Premier League are not allowing the club to do the same procedure with Tevez on the basis that such a move would indicate the original agreements with Joorabchian were still binding despite assurances to the contrary.

The Argentina striker last week submitted a written request to West Ham asking to be released from his contract but the Hammers stuck to the Premier League's advice and refused to do so.

The League have made it clear they expect a significant chunk of any transfer fee to remain with West Ham rather than be passed on to Joorabchian as compensation for breaching the contracts he had with the club.

Manchester United and West Ham had held talks at the Premier League's offices in London on Tuesday in an effort to resolve the situation but no agreement was reached. A West Ham spokesman confirmed talks had taken place.

The club spokesman told PA Sport: 'Meetings have taken place between the two clubs but no agreement has been reached in relation to Carlos Tevez.'

Interview: Wayne Rooney

To mark the launch of United's new local language website in Japan, www.manutd.jp, Wayne Rooney spoke exclusively to ManUtd.com during the opening leg of the Reds' Asia tour...

The Reds' striker is looking forward to the start of the new campaign and feels the club's summer signings have turned the current squad into the strongest he's known during his United career...

It’s your second Asia Tour with United, what do you make of the level of support out here?
It's amazing to see the fans out here. The reception we got at the airport was unbelievable. The tour is a great experience for all the players.

What have you made of the tour so far?
It's been good. We want to win all the games but the most important thing about it is getting your fitness up so you're ready for the start of the season.

How much have you enjoyed your second visit to Tokyo?
Very much, it's a great city. Last time I was here [in 2005] we had an afternoon off and I went shopping which was great. It's somewhere I've really enjoyed visiting.

How much are you looking forward to the new season – is there a different feel to it because you’re starting it as champions?
I don't think there is any more pressure on us because we won the league last season, it's just the same as always. We're just concentrating on getting fit for the start of the new campaign. The mood is really good in the squad and hopefully we can do well again and try to win the title again.

How excited are you by the new signings – what have you made of them so far in training?
All the players are excited by their arrival. I know all about Owen Hargreaves from our time with England. You know what you're going to get with Owen - he's a top player and a good lad. I haven't seen too much of Nani and Anderson although I played against Anderson in a friendly once. Nani hasn't been able to train yet but I'm sure both of
them will do really well for us.

How much will you relish playing alongside Carlos Tevez?
It'll be great. Hopefully things will get sorted soon. He did brilliantly for West Ham last season and I think he'll be a great signing for us.

You netted 23 goals last season – your best campaign to date – is the aim to hit 30?
I was pleased with my return last season and I want to continue doing my best. I don't set myself targets but I'll certainly be looking to do even better than I did last season. I haven't got any bets with the manager, but hopefully I can score more goals than last year.

The title was the priority last season. Is it the same again this year or does Europe take on greater importance especially having gone so close last time?
I'm not sure. To be honest I'd take any trophy at the start of the season. The Premier League is the competition you play in week in, week out. For me, it's more important. Nevertheless, the Champions League is a massive tournament and I'd love to win it. The Milan away game still niggles. We know we can play a lot better. It was particularly disappointing to get knocked out having gone into the game with a lead. Hopefully we can do well again throughout the whole campaign especially in the Champions League.

Is the squad the strongest you've ever known it during your time here?
Yes, definitely. There are more players and better quality players as well. There's a good mix of youth and experience which is great for the team. It's definitely the strongest squad I've been involved in.

There will obviously be lots of competition for places next season...
It will be huge given the amount of players in the squad. Everyone is going to have to be on top of their game and try their best to get into the team.

Sir Alex pleased with run-out

Sir Alex Ferguson was pleased with his players after their first run-out in the 2-2 draw with Urawa Red Diamonds at the Saitama Stadium in Tokyo.

United came from a goal down to lead 2-1 with second-half strikes from Darren Fletcher and Cristiano Ronaldo, but Urawa Reds staged a comeback to level at 2-2. But, Reds boss Sir Alex considered a good first run-out.

"We tired a little in the second half," he told MUTV. "That's understandable after a long journey. It's 14 or 15 hours' travel so that's difficult. The players applied themselves well and played some good football at times. We managed to get quite a few of them a good run out, so we're happy with that.

"We came back well," he added. "We started the second half with a bit of speed and we did all right. Towards the end of the game the legs went a bit. But some of the players played very well.

"[Rooney and Ronaldo] were both excellent. You can see the development in their game and the decision-making is getting better. We're very happy with them."

Sir Alex was also praised young defenders Jonny Evans and Danny Simpson, who came on at half time for Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

"Jonny and Danny did okay," he said. "I think Jonny could have maybe done better on the second goal but it was a good start for him. We know his potential, he's a fantastic young player and young Simpson did really well – his energy up and down the line was good."

United are next in action against FC Seoul on Friday (KO 12:00 noon BST) where Owen Hargreaves and Nani could get their first appearances in a red shirt. The match is live on MUTV Online and MUTV.

Tevez deal excites Sir Bobby

Sir Bobby Charlton has described Carlos Tevez as a "tremendous prospect" and hopes he can swiftly complete a move to Old Trafford.

United Chief Executive David Gill revealed on Monday that the Argentine attacker will undergo a medical this week before completing his switch from West Ham.
Sir Bobby feels the 23-year-old will fit in perfectly with the Reds and believes he will thrive on the Old Trafford stage.
"Hopefully, we can complete the signing of Carlos sooner rather than later. He is a tremendous prospect," insisted Sir Bobby at a press conference in Japan to promote the Manchester United Opus.
"Maybe there is a legal process to be gone through before it can all happen but we all hope it is done sooner rather than later."

United already have an exciting array of attacking talent, but Sir Bobby says the acquisition of Tevez would only add to the Reds' potency going forward.
"I have talked before about the exciting players we try to bring to this club, and Carlos Tevez is one of them. He is a marvellous talent and we are always interested in bringing talented players to our club."

Scholes outlines his aims

United may have let a 2-1 lead slip in Tokyo's Saitama Stadium on Monday but Paul Scholes says Reds fans shouldn't be concerned.

"At this stage, winning's not the most important thing," Scholes told MUTV after the final whistle.

"It was nice to get the first game out of the way and we played decent football at times. Right now, it's all about getting our fitness levels up and we're all working towards playing Reading on the first day of the season. We need to be firing on all cylinders for that one."

The midfielder says it's important United get off to another quick start in the league and he believes the Reds' summer signings will aid that objective.

"Every player gets excited when new players come, especially with the quality of players that have joined. They all look impressive and they can only make us better.

"We want to do the same as we did last year [win the league] and maybe win the FA Cup and Champions League as well. I think we've got a squad that's capable of having as good a season as last year, if not better."

Tevez talks stalemated

Talks between Manchester United and West Ham on Carlos Tevez's proposed move to Old Trafford ended in stalemate on Tuesday night.

A delegation led by West Ham chairman Eggert Magnusson met a team led by United lawyer Maurice Watkins at the Premier League's offices in London.

The talks ended in deadlock however with no agreement reached over the 23-year-old Argentina striker, who flew into Manchester with the intention of undergoing a medical on Wednesday.

Those hopes have been left in limbo after United failed to secure permission for the medical and fitness tests from West Ham.

A West Ham spokesman confirmed talks had taken place.

The club spokesman told PA Sport: "Meetings have taken place between the two clubs but no agreement has been reached in relation to Carlos Tevez."

"The process is ongoing. The player will have a medical at some point this week, then we will take it from there.

"We still have to sort out the paperwork but we are confident that can be achieved in the course of the next week or so."

United is understood to have agreed an initial loan deal for Tevez with a view to a permanent transfer, a similar deal to that which took Javier Mascherano from West Ham to Liverpool in January.

That hit a stumbling block however because in January, West Ham cancelled Mascherano's registration. The Premier League is not allowing the club to do the same procedure with Tevez on the basis that such a move would indicate the original agreements with Joorabchian were still binding despite assurances to the contrary.

The Argentina striker last week submitted a written request to West Ham asking to be released from his contract but the Hammers stuck to the Premier League's advice and refused to do so.

The League has made it clear it expects a significant chunk of any transfer fee to remain with West Ham rather than be passed on to Joorabchian as compensation for breaching the contracts he had with the club.
