Smith leaves Man U for Newcastle
Fri Aug 3, 2007 2:16PM BST

England forward Alan Smith joined Newcastle United from Premier League champions Manchester United on Friday in a five-year deal.

Smith, whose fee was estimated by the British media to be 6 million pounds, ended a three-year spell at Old Trafford, having joined from Leeds for 7 million.

Though popular with the fans, the 26-year-old failed to establish himself as a first-team regular and was at one stage deployed as a defensive midfielder.

He made 93 appearances for United, scoring 12 goals, and will link up with two other former Leeds players on Tyneside -- James Milner and Australia striker Mark Viduka, another new recruit.

Smith could make his debut in a friendly against Italian club Sampdoria on Sunday at St James' Park, Newcastle said on their Web site (www.nufc.co.uk).

The striker is new manager Sam Allardyce's fifth pre-season signing after Viduka, midfielders Joey Barton and Cameroon's Geremi, and Czech defender David Rozenhal.

Looks like it's a Done Deal for Alan Smith & Newcastle United. I still don';t know why Alan Snmith was Infact Signed by Manchester United In the Firts Place. I reckon if He and Kewell, Viduka, Okon & Blake stuck themselves into Leeds United, they wouldn't be where they are Now{Football League One}

Tevez set for Red Devils debut next week

Carlos Tevez trained with his new Manchester United team-mates for the first time today -- and Sir Alex Ferguson has pencilled him in for a big night in Belfast or Dunfermline next week. With the Premier League ratifying a deal which releases Tevez from his West Ham contract, United got the 23-year-old through his medical this morning before Ferguson put him through his paces at Carrington.

The Argentina striker will have another session tomorrow, leaving Ferguson to decide whether to send Tevez to Glentoran or Dunfermline on Wednesday for pre-arranged friendlies with a split squad.

'We are delighted,'' Ferguson told MUTV.

'Carlos trained with us this morning and he did very well.

'He was very enthusiastic about the situation, so he will train again tomorrow.

'Then, we have a couple of games on Wednesday; in Belfast and Dunfermline. He will be involved in one of those and play the full game.'

Tevez's debut will mark the start of a two-year loan period, which gives United the option to complete a permanent transfer at the end.

It will also mark the end of a long-running saga which Ferguson expected to complete a month ago, only to find his hopes stall amid the row over Tevez's third-party ownership.

Providing Tevez suffers no adverse reaction to his debut, he should be involved when United open their Premier League title defence against Reading on August 12, his first appearance at Old Trafford since scoring the goal on the final day of last season which kept West Ham up.

The two-year loan deal is likely to cost United around £5million a year and a statement from Tevez's representative said: 'Carlos is looking forward to being a Manchester United player and his ambition is close to being achieved.

'We would like to thank Manchester United for all their patience and support throughout.'

United are looking at the same sort of loan package that saw Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano move to Liverpool last season.

That took some weeks before it was signed off by the Premier League but with that transfer having already been picked over by the lawyers, a similar deal for Tevez should go through much quicker but not in time for Sunday's Community Shield game against Chelsea at Wembley.

West Ham emphasised the settlement confirmed they had held the player's contract and registration.

The Hammers said in a statement: 'The settlement ends the current litigation taking place between the respective parties and provides for a £2million fee to be paid to West Ham.

'The agreement confirms that West Ham do have a valid player's contract with Carlos Tevez and hold the registration of the player. This will be released once the agreed fee has been paid to the club.'

West Ham chairman Eggert Magnusson was relieved the affair has finally been concluded.

He said: 'I am obviously pleased that we have finally reached the end of this saga through agreement and common sense.

'All parties involved can now move on and truly focus on the new season.

'I wish Carlos Tevez well for the next stage of his playing career. He is a fine player and I am sure he will be successful wherever he plays football.'

The Premier League said they were satisfied that West Ham had behaved in line with their undertakings when they terminated the third-part deals with Joorabchian in April.

That led to a High Court law suit from Joorabchian but did allow Tevez to play the last three games of the season in which he had a crucial role in their escape from relegation.

A statement from the league said: 'The Premier League can confirm that its board has received and considered a proposal for the settlement of the dispute between Carlos Tevez and West Ham United.

'The decision of the board, having received leading counsel's opinion, is that the agreement reached is compliant with the rules of the Premier League and consistent with the undertakings given by West Ham United to the Premier League board at various times since April 27, 2007.

'This will lead to the cancellation of Tevez's registration, thereby releasing him to join another club in due course.'

United win on penalties...

Edwin van der Sar was the shoot-out hero as Manchester United clinched a Community Shield triumph over Chelsea at Wembley.

Marginally better than a drab FA Cup final in May, England's top two remained level at 1-1 at full-time after Florent Malouda had levelled Ryan Giggs' first-half opener.

But then came the real drama as Van der Sar pulled off three successive saves, denying David Pizarro, Frank Lampard and Shaun Wright-Phillips, offering Wayne Rooney the chance to step up and win the trophy as he maintained United's 100 percent record.

The victory will probably mean little in the nine-month slog that lies ahead but at least the Premier League champions have another trophy to sit alongside the big one, and gained some measure of revenge for their defeat three months ago.

In a sense, the early exchanges were more about who was not playing than who was.

John Terry, reportedly for a month, Andriy Shevchenko and Didier Drogba were absent from the blue corner, while Owen Hargreaves, Anderson and Gary Neville were among those missing from the red.

In the absence of so many star names, Wright-Phillips shone for a while, beating both Mikael Silvestre and Patrice Evra during one mazy right-wing raid.

With David Beckham almost certain to miss England's August 22 friendly against Germany, Wright-Phillips has a big incentive to start the campaign well. But it was his flank partner Maluoda who had the most telling impact.

It was the Frenchman's free-kick that Michael Essien got a head to as United's goal was threatened for the first time. Jon Obi Mikel, sold by the Red Devils to Chelsea for £12million a year ago after an acrimonious dispute, flung himself forward at the far post but was unable to prevent the ball floating wide.

Malouda also had a fierce shot saved by Van der Sar before he did manage to find the net a minute before half-time, showing impressive speed and strength to first beat Rio Ferdinand, then resist the defender's illegal attempts to hold him back.

By that point, Giggs had already put United in front, marking his 10th Community Shield appearance in style.

Wright-Phillips failed to follow Patrice Evra's off-the-ball run after the Frenchman had laid off a short pass to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Evra collected Ronaldo's through ball, raced to the by-line, then cut a superb pass back which invited Giggs' clinical finish; amazingly his first goal at Wembley since his days as an England Schoolboy.

As Giggs had already given Petr Cech the chance to save a low shot when the Welshman had found himself clear on goal, his successful effort was adequate compensation and came at a time when United were well on top.

Malouda's leveller put a different slant on the respective half-time team-talks of Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho, although the on-going feud between Rooney and Tal Ben Haim was another topic for discussion in the stands.

Three years ago, the FA slapped a three-match ban on Rooney after the striker shoved Ben Haim in the face during his Bolton days.

Rooney has clearly not forgotten the perceived injustice and, after referee Mark Halsey had booked Ben Haim for a clear foul on Rooney, the United man sought retribution with a lunge at the Israeli in first-half stoppage time.

Unfortunately for Rooney, Ben Haim saw it coming, nudging him away, a move which resulted in the England forward clashing with Petr Cech instead, triggering a booking.

While a prolonged absence for Terry would be a concern to Mourinho, unlike last season, at least Cech is fully fit.

The Czech keeper came to Chelsea's rescue again just after the break when he denied Ronaldo, Glen Johnson flying in to block Giggs' follow-up.

Substitute Pizarro flashed a shot wide not long after Ferguson had introduced Nani for his first game in a United shirt on English soil.

Just to prove he is human after all, Cech made a rare mistake in failing to make any contact with Nani's inswinging corner, although neither Ronaldo nor Nemanja Vidic could profit as Steve Sidwell booted clear to spare his team-mate's blushes.

It was the last meaningful chance either side had until the lottery of penalties.

Ferguson's record in such contests is so bad, he must have felt like giving Chelsea the trophy there and then.

This time though, there was a happy ending for the Scot, with Van der Sar and Rooney the United matchwinners.

'Exceptional' Tevez excites Fergie

SIR Alex Ferguson confiremd today (AEST) that Argentina striker Carlos Tevez, who has "something exceptional about him", will make his Manchester United debut on Thursday (AEST).

Ferguson expressed excitement at the arrival of Tevez, who is set to complete a move to Old Trafford from West Ham United this week following a prolonged transfer saga which centred on who owned the striker.

On Friday, West Ham reached a £2 million ($4.76 million) settlement with Tevez's representatives, paving the way for the player to join the English Premier League champion.

"I think the boy's got something exceptional in him," said Ferguson.

"We experienced it in the last game against him at Old Trafford when he was a real handful to us."

United send squads to face both Northern Ireland's Glentoran and Scottish Division One Dunfermline Athletic on Thursday (AEST), with Tevez set to appear four days before United open their league title defence against Reading.

"He's playing on Wednesday. I don't know where - either Belfast or Dunfermline, that'll be his first game," said Ferguson.

"It would be nice to think I could have him for the Reading game, if not I'm sure the following week."

Ferguson was quick to point out that the menacing attacking qualities Tevez shares with England striker Wayne Rooney will not stop the pair lining up together this season.

"Both are of a similar physique, both are two-footed, both are quickish, both can beat a man - I don't think it's a bad thing to have these similarities."

That enthusiasm was shared by Rio Ferdinand, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs who scored United's goal in their Community Shield triumph over Chelsea today. The match was drawn 1-1 with United winning a penalty shootout 3-0.

"Everyone's been very eager for him to come in," said England defender Ferdinand.

"But this is a very easy squad to integrate into because we've got a very open mentality and attitude ... We want to do the same thing which is win."

Noting the arrival of Owen Hargreaves, Nani and Anderson, Ronaldo added: "The new players are good and now with Tevez, these four players are great and it's good for the team".

Giggs was more cautionary. "He brings an extra dimension. We've got plenty of attacking options but we don't want to get carried away ... defences win championships.

"It won us the championship last year and that gives the platform for these players to go on and produce the skills they have."

Petit: Man Utd signing Tevez Premiership's most exciting
tribalfooball.com - August 06, 2007

Former Arsenal and Chelsea star Manu Petit believes Manchester United have landed the hottest player in the Premiership - Carlos Tevez.

Petit told the Guardian: "Amid all the controversy the guy's footballing talent has been completely overshadowed. If any other player had rescued his club like he did, we would all be shouting from the rooftops. In addition to his skills he has passion, positive anger, an amazing attitude and, at 23, he is yet to reach his peak.

"What I love most, though, is the way he can change a game by himself. I was at West Ham's match against Bolton in May. As West Ham's only likely saviour Tevez was under extraordinary pressure to perform. He scored two goals and created the third in a 3-1 win. He was undoubtedly the Premiership's finest performer in the second half of last season and there is no one I would rather watch this time around."
The World Cup winner also had praise for Arsenal teenager Theo Walcott. "The circumstances of Theo's move to Arsenal and inclusion in England's World Cup squad ensured he spent last season under huge pressure. I've seen the boy train and I can tell you he is something special. At times last season he reminded me of a wild horse - amazing speed but unsure of his direction. This campaign he must have the direction, the confidence and, above all else, an ability to score goals for his team."

Report: Glentoran 0 United 3

Nani was the star of the show in Northern Ireland as United beat Glentoran 3-0 at The Oval on Wednesday night, dazzling with his skill, impressing with his tireless work-rate and scoring the best goal on the night.

The 20-year-old completed the full 90 minutes and looks ready for the start of the new season. He scored United’s third, adding to goals from Fraizer Campbell and Patrice Evra.

With Sir Alex Ferguson absent as he moves house (it seems strange even writing that), Carlos Queiroz took charge of the team in Belfast, where United were afforded a warm welcome, with more red shirts than green among the 14,000-strong crowd, and the offer of the home dressing room at The Oval.

All eyes were on United’s young signings Nani and Anderson as the match kicked off, but it was two other youthful starlets that engineered an early breakthrough.

Livewire winger Lee Martin had already proved a persistent nuisance down the left flank in the first four minutes. He showed determination to win back possession in the penalty area, skill and pace to beat his marker and awareness to pick out young striker Campbell, whose acrobatic volley from close range gave Glentoran goalkeeper Michael Dougherty no chance.

United’s slick movement brought a second goal after thirteen minutes, this time from a speedy counterattack. Nani, Anderson and Campbell all played their part in a swift move that finished up with Evra cracking a low shot into the bottom right corner.

Nani’s pace was ever threatening and, once he had settled, Anderson too showed some neat touches in his role as a deep-lying striker. He went close with a low shot on the 16-minute mark, then teed-up a Campbell volley with a clever one-two on the edge of the area.

In recent years, United fans have become accustomed to a Portuguese No.7 running at defenders, cutting inside and rifling a shot past the keeper. But, Cristiano Ronaldo had remained in Manchester for treatment on a minor ankle injury. The architect of United’s third, an unstoppable thunderbolt into the top corner, was Nani – with Ronaldo’s shirt temporarily on loan – and he appears sharp, ready for the new season and potentially as explosive as his fellow countryman.

Glentoran made nine changes at the break, whereas United made stuck with the same eleven. The Reds continued to controll the game without ever really overexerting themselves.

Half-chances came and went for Martin, Evra, Anderson and Nani. But, late on, the Irish Premier League side went close to what would have been a memorable goal to mark their 125th anniversary. First United’s Lee Martin had to clear a shot off the line following a goalmouth scramble from a corner with 15 minutes remaining, then BJ McMenamin fluffed his chance to blast home a volley.

All in all it was a good workout for the Reds, and not just for Nani and Anderson. Youngsters Martin and Campbell both impressed, and Michael Lea, Darron Gibson and Dong Fangzhuo all got run-outs as substitutes. But, now the real football begins and the Reds' focus now turns to Reading's visit to Old Trafford on Sunday for the start of United’s title defence.

Team Line-up

United: Heaton, Simpson (Gibson, 61), Ferdinand, Vidic (Lea, 69), Evra; Martin, Carrick, O’Shea, Nani; Anderson, Campbell (Dong, 61).

Report: Dunfermline 0 United 4

United notched a comfortable victory over Dunfermline in Scott Thomson’s testimonial, winning 4-0 through goals from Chris Eagles, Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney (2).
First team coach Mike Phelan guided a strong Reds side to victory at East End Park, with one of the highlights being a 90-minute appearance from midfielder Paul Scholes.
Scholes’ surprise run-out came just two weeks after a knee operation, and is a massive boost ahead of the new season. So too, was the 65-minute appearance of Owen Hargreaves, who turned in a solid display on his first United start.
Chris Eagles was within inches of putting United ahead after 13 minutes, only for Ryan Giggs’ inswinging cross to be deflected away from the youngster just before he could head home.
Pars winger Morrison fired a neat volley over Tomasz Kuszcak’s crossbar seven minutes later to underline that the hosts were not simply making up the numbers against their more illustrious opponents.
The Reds’ class told as they moved ahead after 23 minutes, however, and sadly man of the hour Thomson was involved, missing Giggs’ slotted through-ball and allowing Eagles time to clip home a calm finish.
Wayne Rooney was proving a constant thorn in the hosts’ side, and it was his inch-perfect pass which gave Giggs the chance to double United’s advantage in the 35th minute with an impudent chip over goalkeeper Murdoch.
It was the Welsh veteran’s second goal in successive pre-season outings after his Community Shield strike, and he was involved again just before half-time as he released Fletcher, only for the Scot to drag his shot wide.
Rooney drove a shot wide just before the interval, but he had to wait only 15 minutes of the second period before getting his goal. The England striker coolly slotted home a penalty after Fletcher had been brought down by Murdoch.
A second was almost forthcoming shortly afterwards as Rooney brilliantly diverted Sean Evans’ cross goalwards, only for a super one-handed save from substitute keeper McKenzie.
The game continued at an energetic pace before Rooney wrapped up the victory three minutes from time, racing through and clipping home after being inexplicably gifted possession by McManus.
The evening’s final highlight came in the final minute as Thomson was substituted in order to receive a rousing ovation, which was duly forthcoming.
While the Pars veteran was the undoubted man of the hour, United can be more than happy with the added bonus of a decent workout ahead of Sunday’s season opener against Reading.

Team Line-ups

Dunfermline Athletic: Murdoch (McKenzie, 65); McGuire (Shields, 46), Bamba (Wilson, 57), Thomson (Burchill, 90), Woods (Muirhead, 46); Williamson (Harper, 46), Phinn, Simmons (Young, 46), O. Morrison (McManus, 46); Crawford, Hamilton (Glass, 65).
Manchester United: Kuszczak; Bardsley, Brown (A Eckersley, 46), Pique, Silvestre; Eagles, Fletcher, Scholes, Hargreaves (S Evans, 65); Rooney, Giggs (Eikrem, 79).
Subs not used: van der Sar.

The omission of Cristiano Ronaldo from United's squad to face Glentoran on Wednesday is merely a precautionary measure against a minor ankle injury.

The Portuguese winger had been expected to line up against the Glens at the Oval, but was conspicuous by his absence as the Reds flew to Belfast on Wednesday morning.

A Club spokesman told ManUtd.com: "Cristiano has been left out of tonight’s friendly against Glentoran with a slight ankle knock. He was left in Manchester as a precaution.

"He will train on Friday and is expected to be fit for Sunday’s game against Reading."

The news is a further boost to Sir Alex Ferguson, who was able to include knee injury victim Paul Scholes in the squad for Wednesday's other friendly - the Scott Thomson testimonial against Dunfermline, which is live on MUTV Online.
