After waiting three years, Bulldogs coach Des Hasler finally got his man in Michael Lichaa. Credit: Bulldogs media. Copyright: Bulldogs media.
The heart wants what the heart wants. And Des Hasler's heart has been set on talented hooker Michael Lichaa for more than three years now which, in rugby league-speak, is a lifetime.

"I was only 18 I think, I might've just finished SG Ball. It was a while ago when I first met him [but] I re-signed with the Sharks then," Lichaa recalled to NRL.com.

"We had talks [about him signing me] but it didn't happen. I was happy where I was.

"This time around I didn't want to let the opportunity slip again."

We couldn't say whether his wooing of the Sharks prodigy was as a future replacement for the never-ending engine that is Matt Ballin at Manly or the aging skipper that was Michael Ennis at the Bulldogs, given Hasler took his clipboard from Brookvale to Belmore not long after Lichaa decided to stay in the Shire in 2011.

But this much we do know: Hasler has been swooning to Lichaa's undeniable talent for a fair while now. And the next time Lichaa became a free man, he melted at the supercoach's advances.

"I know what he's done with a lot of players. When I was 17 or 18, I didn't want to look at it like that. I had just got an opportunity to train with first grade at the Sharks and that was a big thing for me," he explained.

"When I got a bit older, I realised what Des had done with every player he's had from Manly then to the Bulldogs now. He's turned the halves into State of Origin halves at Manly, and he's done it here [at the Bulldogs]. I want to have that opportunity."

The pages of Lichaa's resume already read like that of a long-serving veteran. Only 21 years of age, the Yarrawarra product has already represented NSW at under-18s and under-20s level; he was named at hooker for the 2012 and 2013 NYC Team of the Year; and was also selected for the Junior Kangaroos over the same period.

So you can see why Hasler was prepared to bypass a career-year from the heart of the Bulldogs' grand final side for one that's got younger lungs.

Asked whether he expected to last 80 minutes in his first gig as a bona fide starter, Lichaa said:

"Definitely. That's how Des seems to play his teams. I knew signing here that it was going to be a goal. It's been in the back of my head. And if we keep going like the way we have this pre-season, I should be able to do that."

Despite his obvious affinity for Lichaa three years ago, Hasler already had at his disposal for 2015 an experienced skipper and dummy-half who knew how to toe the line on a rugby league field.

Competitiveness was arguably Ennis' best attribute and, in many ways, it characterised the Bulldogs' run to the decider this year.

"I'm not trying to be Mick Ennis," Lichaa said. "We're totally different players. He was really good for this club for five or six years, but it's my turn now. People will have their opinions and compare us over the next three years that I'm here. But I'm just going to worry about myself. I'm really happy Des put a lot of trust in me over the next years. I'm looking forward to it."

We're sure Des is too.

Thanks Vlasnik.

Interesting comments on him playing 80 minutes next season, wonder where M'bye fits? I know many saw as a utility option for next season however this article seems to suggest otherwise.

Cannot wait to see him direct our pack around next year. In limited exposure to first grade he looked very good, minimal missed tackles and fast on his feet when he ran from dummy half.

I expect a big year from Lichaa in 2015.

Yep. Mbye will definitely be in the halves. The question is, which player will partner him in the NSW Cup.
Both our current halves are stuck in the rehab group for pre season, Moses will train all off season as no.1 half. Then there is Frawley, Graham and McGrady who will be behind him. Out of our current halves it is extremely likely one will cop some suspensions and the other has a good chance of injury. It has already been talked about within the club and media that Lichaa and Moses will build up a strong combination together. Moses will cement his first grade spot by the end of this season.

So Mbye at halfback in for Hodkinson? :D
Tbh i really don't care who he takes over from, aslong as he is theret. We will never win a comp with out current halves pairing and i fail to see how anyone could think otherwise.

Our halfs combination wont change unless they decide not to resign hodko after 2015. At least we have decent backups though

I hope Lichaa lives up to the hype that has built around him. Ennis may not have been as creative as Farah or Smith nor did he possess the speed from dummy half of Luke or Segeyaro etc. What he did do was allow our forward pack to play to their potential by focusing on his role. I hope that Lichaa adds some flair to our attack but not if it means he makes life harder for our forwards. Our world class forward pack can quickly turn to crap if they aren't receiving good service from the hooker. We saw how they lost all momentum with Mbye playing his first game at #9 in the GF (no disrespect to Mbye he was playing a specialist position with minimal training). As long as Lichaa can get the basics right i'll be happy if he slowly adds flair. Some people seem to think he will be the next Cameron Smith by the time Hasler has had a pre-season with him. I'll be happy if we aren't saying we miss Ennis when the finals roll up.

Assuming one or both of Hokko and Reynolds are unfit for kickoff Mbye will get his chance to impress. He has shown plenty of potential. Comparing him at this stage to where Reynolds was when he debuted and i would say that Mbye in his rookie season showed a better kicking game and seemed more relaxed in the playmaking role. His support play has not impressed me yet while Reynolds was a jack in the box when he started in the NRL, you never knew where he would pop up and cut through gaps at will. At this stage i still think Reynolds has shown enough improvement in key areas to warrant keeping his spot. His main asset for a long time was his support play, but his kicking and positional play in attack improved this season. Mbye is a work in progress in my mind and will compete for a spot if his form is good this season and Reynolds doesn't cut down on the brain snaps. I like Reynolds but he really needs to learn some composure. Every week he spends sidelined for suspension is a week when Mbye will be hoping to steal his position

Alternatively if we compare Mbye to Hodkinson i'd say that Mbye is far better on his feet. Hokko seems like a thinker to me. He doesn't have much pace but when he runs the ball he usually runs into a gap. He is smart with his kicking game or is able to stick with Haslers plan at least (kick for depth and tire the opposition forwards). I think that his greatest asset is his calm under pressure. The thing that worries me is that he seemed pretty tentative about playing hard when his knee was injured in the finals. When he plays confidently he shows touches of brilliance at times. If he has no confidence in his knee i get the feeling it will limit his game in a big way. If he has fear about his future in the back of his mind he could decide he is happy to be a passenger. I hope he's back to his confident best again by kickoff. I haven't seen enough of Mbye to say how well he organizes a team but if we promote him over Hokko i'd hope he's got the confidence, foresight and ability to tell the players where he expects them to be during the game and execute a game plan (not by beheading the plan with poor decisions). I think he could rival Hodkinsons kicking game but will need a lot of game time to develop the kind of confidence under pressure that Hodkinson shows. For all the speed and agility people credit to him he hasn't really shown the quality in his running game i was expecting from what i had read about him. I see that he is quick but he doesn't pick his gaps all that well yet. Again i think that Hodkinson should still be ahead of Mbye in the pecking order until Mbye has shown more at the top level.

I saw this year that we could execute a solid game plan for the current interpretation of NRL rules with our current halves. Our forward pack is vieing to be the best every week and was our main strength last year. Our halves worked off that by letting them grind teams down all day and only looked to spread the ball late in the set. With an attacking fullback on the end of our forwards passing game we would have been a bigger force last year and i think Morris will probably provide that spark. We recruited some players that can be weapons in the backline so hopefully it allows both Hodkinson and Reynolds to show confidence enough to break away from the grinding game plan when opportunities rise. If Mbye breaks into the top 17 permanently then congrats but i know we have plenty of success with our current halves. Mbye looks like a quality player but has not shown anything outstanding in the NRL yet. I think he'll find a spot there sooner or later but he has good competition ahead of him.

I saw an article on foxsports that rated the 5/8ths in the comp. I pissed myself whenni saw Reynolds was fourth, i then saw all the other players in the list and struggled to place him lower than 6. Halves development this last couple of years has been horrible in rugby league, way to focused on big powerfull players instead of smart lil players.
