Brock Jarvis edges closer to world title shot with brutal win over Nort Beauchamp

It's a simple purpose, that of boxing hall of famer Jeff Fenech.

To see Brock Jarvis achieve everything he did and more. Now the legend and the rising star are one step closer towards fulfilling one of their deepest desires.

Jarvis [19-0] edged towards a world title shot with a sixth-round stoppage win over Nort Beauchamp [18-4] at EPIC's Coorong Pavilion on Friday night.

Beauchamp was a willing challenger, aggressive from the outset and determined to take the fight to the much bigger favourite. But Jarvis, though far from the finished product he is tipped to become, would prove a class above.

The Kiwi was perhaps lucky to make it as far as he did against a relentless opponent determined to break Beauchamp's body down. There can certainly be no questioning his heart or durability. But the decision to call it off 59 seconds into the sixth was certainly the right one.

Talks are underway for Jarvis to take on the winner of this weekend's WBO featherweight championship bout between Emanuel Navarrete and Christopher Diaz, should the 23-year-old Sydneysider stay in the division rather than venture to super featherweight.

So it is somewhat fitting he will have Fenech in his corner, a man who rose to boxing's highest heights.

"Jeff and Brock are like a hand in a glove, they're incredibly tight," Jarvis' promoter Dean Lonergan said.

"Brock responds well to Jeff, and Jeff has complete faith in Brock. They're an unbelievable team and I'm looking forward to seeing how they develop.

"Jeff brings to the table years of experience and he knows the boxing game better than anyone I've ever dealt with. Whether it be training, whether it be management, whether it be media and understanding the need for media, he is a valuable asset for Brock.

"Jeff has got nothing but good things to say about Brock. He takes great pride in the progress we've seen over the past two years.

"Unfortunately Brock has had limited opportunities because of injuries, but it's great to be able to go from one fight to the next down here in Canberra."

The next may take place on a bigger stage in Sydney with Top Rank boxing promoter Bob Arum highlighting Jarvis as the next man in line for a shot at a featherweight strap.

Lonergan is keen to tap into Fenech's lineage with a fight at Sydney's Hordern Pavilion but concedes major costs could come with it due to COVID-19 restrictions.

A champion and his team would likely need to quarantine upon arrival unless there are drastic changes on the coronavirus front in the coming months.

"I really like the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney. Jeff Fenech fought there a lot and there is a lot of great Fenech history. It would be pretty damn huge if we can pull this off and get it down there," Lonergan said.

"Quarantine is something the Americans don't like to address, but I figure if you can have multi-millionaire tennis players go through two weeks of quarantine, then it shouldn't be too hard for boxers to do it.

"Bob Arum absolutely loves Sydney and wants to come down. Potentially with the fight being in October, there is plenty of time for a lot of COVID issues to pass."

Jarvis is one of three in Lonergan's promotional stable on the road to the world stage. One part of the trio is Olympic Games gold medal hopeful Justis Huni.

The other is middleweight Issac Hardman, who took one step closer to a shot against WBA champion Ryoto Murata after stopping Mark Lucas in seven rounds in Friday's co-main event.

Lucas retired on his stool after seven rounds, with Hardman retaining his ANBF Australian, WBO Oriental and IBF Australasian titles.

Meanwhile, history repeated as TC Priestley stopped Ben Dencio to claim the ANBF Australian super featherweight title for the second time.

Priestley stopped Dencio to claim the belt in an upset two years ago, and this time around he dropped his rival in the ninth round to become a two-time national champion.
