At least one of the people involved in the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy in Sydney's west knew the victim, police say.

Police are hunting for three or four males who fled the scene of the killing at Greenfield Park by car on Wednesday morning.

The teenager died after he was shot in the chest and neck outside his home in Smithfield Road shortly before 5am (AEDT) on Wednesday.

Police said three or four males, possibly teenagers, had knocked on the door of the house.

Superintendent Murray Johnstone told reporters the boy came to the door with his parents and his younger brother, and an argument broke out.

A number of shots were fired, and the boy was gunned down outside the front door.

The teenager died from his wounds at the scene.

"At least one of the offenders knew of the victim," Supt Johnstone said.

They knew each other through "conversations", he said, adding he was unable to give any more details.

Police are appealing for information on any incidents in the preceding week that may have led to the shooting.

"Any little detail that may seem insignificant can actually be the final piece of the puzzle that police put together," Supt Johnstone said.

Friends of the boy, whose name has not been officially released, say he was friendly and outgoing.

A small group of teenage girls was gathered near the house on Wednesday morning to pay their respects.

"He was really nice, really friendly and outgoing," said a former girlfriend, 17-year-old Arlette Salas.

"I don't know how this could have happened to him. We just can't believe it."

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, told AAP his young daughter had woken up to the sound of three gunshots.

"We didn't know what was going on. It was frightening," he said.

Another resident, Tania Cilia, said she had lived in the area all her life and had never seen anything like it.

"We have never had any problems. It's usually very quiet," she said.

"The poor boy was so young. He never had a chance to live."

Smithfield Road remained cordoned off between Canley Vale and Mimosa roads on Wednesday afternoon while police continued their inquiries.

Doesn't someone on here live near Greenfield Park?
