Michael Maguire's reign as South Sydney NRL coach has ended with immediate effect.

The Rabbitohs issued a statement after a Tuesday board meeting, saying Souths and the 2014 premiership-winning coach had agreed to part company.

Maguire piloted Souths to that long-awaited premiership, while also collecting the 2015 World Club Challenge and 2015 Auckland Nines since joining the club in 2012.

But the Rabbitohs have stagnated since, finishing the 2017 campaign with just nine wins and well off finals pace.

Rabbitohs general manager of football Shane Richardson said the decision was in the best interests of both parties.

"We feel it's time for the club to go along a different path in terms of the leadership of the team and the direction the team is taking, and they are the responsibilities of the head coach," Richardson said.

"Michael also feels it's in his best interest to head in a different direction in his coaching career."

Maguire's release adds weight to a possible move to Gold Coast, the Titans chasing a coach since sacking Neil Henry with two games remaining in the season.

"Michael is a great head coach and we believe he will go on to do a good job at another club but, as I said, it's time for a change here at South Sydney," Richardson said.

"On behalf of the club's members, we sincerely thank Michael for his efforts over the past six years ... and we wish him and his family the best of luck for what lies ahead in his career and his family's future."

The week isnt up. Souths had their review tonight. We have it Thursday. I'd say by Friday Des will be gone
Presentation Night is Thursday, no idea when the review is.

Lol.
Souffs board have more spine than ours.
McGuire brought them their first premiership in.....forever and they still dumped him after a couple of lean seasons.
Our board would've given him an upgrade and a 2 year extension.

So that's what it means when you are told you have a job for life when you win a premiership at Souths! Or was it a gifted premiership as an apology for axing the club from the comp.

It's possible Crowe and Maguire have clashed again, as it's happened before over the Keary saga.

Maybe Madge has been offered the NSW job and Souths were happy to release him, though it does sound sudden and unexpected.

No one has a chance at Souths with Crowe throwing his massive weight around all the time.

It's Crowe's way or the highway.

Not sure why everyone surprised by his sacking. There was talk about in pre-season. They have been shambolic the last two seasons as well. Well outside of the 8 on both occasions.

Just goes to show who puts on the best show in town regarding the press, the Dogs or the Bunnies?
Theyve been clutching at straws for 2 years regarding Des' tenure. They spent 5 minutes at Souths.

That appears to be the case here. Heard on the radio that a lot of the decisions re players etc. had been taken out of Maguire's hands. That leaves only one other to have a big say in it all. I know that the guy has bankrolled the club but honestly he has no coaching qualifications. Needs to stick to acting though I have never rated him myself. Your highlighted comment is quite true...have you seen him lately???

Souths got their premiership in 2014 and Maguire has on the one hand been lauded for that, but they have pretty much turned to crap over the last few years. It is like nearly every other club over the last decade or so that wins a premiership; the window of opportunity is open for a short while, then as players age and form suffers it closes.

Fans of Souths have been saying things like the twins needed to be dropped completely, Reynolds form has nosedived, Cook should have been first choice hooker rather than giving Farah a run, players that should have been retained were let go and vice versa....gee that sounds familiar, lol.

Well Dib has to call in a board of enquiry, start a useless survey, get an outside opinion, hold a referendum, ask the prime minister, the Queen, the Pope, Donald Trump and even the North Korean Dictator. That way if it all goes chit faced he can blame everyone bar himself because he wouldn't have made the decision. He should have been in politics because politicians do the same thing.

Ricky Stuart got the punt at the Roosters after he failed to make the finals 2 years in a row despite winning a GF and taking them to 3 GFs in a row.

Des is only still here because this is the first year he's missed the finals, he could be gone though hopefully.

Looks hard done by, a year with no GI and the assistant is supposed to be better, never head of him.

GI is useless anyway.. knees are completely fucked.

He should just retire as it's not something they can fix.

From 7th September, Massoud reckons Maguire got a $4m payout...WTAF?

If true, makes the Dogs look sensible

He had been signed in October last year until the end of 2019, so yes another two.

Hard to see where he comes up with that figure.
