Sonny Bill blackmail attempt
By IAIN PAYTEN
June 23, 2006
SONNY Bill Williams was the subject of a bizarre blackmail bid last night after a restaurant patron attempted to sell tablecloth doodlings by the Bulldogs star.
Williams' manager and several Sydney newspapers were offered the butchers' paper table cover for sums of up to $3000 by a man alleging it contained sensitive information about the Kiwi's future, dollar figures and the names of several NRL clubs.
The man, who identified himself as Ron, told The Daily Telegraph the information detailed Williams' plans to earn $1 million a season in the wake of the anti-tampering deadline being scrapped.
But after failing to offload the butchers' paper to media, the man then unsuccessfully attempted to sell it back to Williams' manager Gavin Orr.
Orr last night laughed off the backyard blackmailer, saying the only things on the table cover were scribbles and crayon portraits Williams and his brother John Arthur did of each other.
The man waited until the trio left the restaurant before snatching the table cover.
"It is really just bizarre," Orr said. "Some people really are desperate.
"We were at a restaurant in Caringbah where they give you crayons and you draw on the table and there was nothing confidential on it at all."
Orr said the club names and dollar references were the result of ribbing toward Williams, who had been on the TV news earlier in the night described as a future "million dollar" man.
"We were having a joke about it. I told Sonny Bill about this guy and he just laughed," Orr said. "Sonny Bill wants to know if he can do more crayon portraits and sell them on eBay."
Williams had a major injury scare last weekend but travelled to Melbourne with the Bulldogs yesterday in preparation for tonight's clash with the Storm.
Jarred Hickey travelled with the Dogs as shadow player in case Williams is ruled out.
