Trent Barrett has officially agreed to terms with Canterbury on a three-year deal, but won’t be making the shift until the end of the season to ensure there is no disruption to Penrith’s promising premiership campaign.

An official announcement from the club is imminent, ending any suggestion that a late contender - such as former Cowboys coach Paul Green - could come into calculations to replace Dean Pay at the last minute
Steve Georgallis will remain the caretaker coach until the end of the season, giving Barrett a fresh start once he finishes his commitments at the foot of the mountains in October.

The Panthers believe they are in a premiership window and don’t want Barrett’s move to become a distraction. Barrett’s influence on the Penrith attack has been positive and club officials want that to continue before releasing him from the final year of his Panthers contract
The situation is akin to Adam O’Brien’s final year at the Roosters. The tri-colours decided to keep O’Brien in their employ until the end of their 2019 campaign, even after he had signed to take over from Nathan Brown at Newcastle the following year. The decision proved a masterstroke, with the tri-colours going on to win back-to-back titles after a potentially tricky situation was managed expertly by Roosters powerbrokers.

Barrett also realises there is little upside in joining the Bulldogs now. The so-called family club is currently in last position and there is little change he can make to the roster in the short term to improve the side’s fortunes. However, there is scope for him to work on retention and recruitment while still at Penrith.
Barrett is close to Corey Harawira-Naera, who is set to make a call on whether to return to the blue and whites or take up one of a number of rival offers headlined by the Raiders. Panthers playmaker Matt Burton could also follow Barrett from Penrith to Canterbury given his progression to first-grade is currently blocked by Panthers halves Nathan Cleary, Jarome Luai and Tyrone May
Manly assistant John Cartwright, who shares the same manager as Barrett, has also been linked to a potential move to Canterbury next year

Manly assistant John Cartwright, who shares the same manager as Barrett, has also been linked to a potential move to Canterbury next year.

Hopefully the club announce Barrett and Cotric soon as they need to officially confirm the worst kept secret in Rugby League.

I'm excited by what Barrett can bring tactically, in attack and in regards to recruits. If we can sign Burton for next year, it would be huge for the club.

I’ll give him my support but personally I’m far from convinced he’s better than the bloke we ousted

I didn't read the article and just saw Tyrone Peachey and had a mini heart attack. Thought Baz wanted to bring the c*** over :tearsofjoy:
Watch it become the next rumour now. "It is understood that Tyrone Peachey may be interested in a move to a Sydney club"

Good news because we can finally start the recruitment drive for next season.

I am looking forward to seeing some of the coaching changes as well. I will celebrate like we have won the comp when Steve James is shown the door.
