The Penrith Panthers have left the door slightly ajar for NSW State of Origin hero Matt Burton to return to the foot of the mountains.
The 22-year-old Canterbury star is free to talk to rival clubs from November and will join Melbourne Storm superstar Cameron Munster as the most sought after players in the NRL.

Panthers group CEO Brian Fletcher refuses to rule out making a play for the boom five-eighth/centre.

“Sure we’d love to have him back,” Fletcher said. “But how do you fit him in the salary cap? That’s the problem. He’s a good bush kid who came through our system. We’re not saying we’re not going to look at it.”

Much will depend on talks with Origin stars Stephen Crichton and Brian To’o who, like Burton, are off contract at the end of next season.

If they were to leave for better money, it would open the cap space for Burton.

“We’ve already lost Api (Koroisau) and Billy Kikau for next year,” Fletcher said.

“We’d like to keep all of them but you can’t. With Matt Burton, I think he only signed at Canterbury for two years knowing he might want to come back at some stage.”

Burton renewed his combination with last year’s premiership-winning Penrith teammates with a stunning performance for NSW in Perth. He looked happy and at home with his old buddies.

Yet he is in no hurry to make a call. Burton wants to know of Canterbury’s coaching plans before making any decision, according to his agent David Riolo.

“My first question to Canterbury will be who’s going to be coaching,” Riolo said. “You can’t really move forward until that decision has been made. We haven’t heard anything.

“It’s no secret he went to the Bulldogs because of his relationship with Trent Barrett.

“That was the main factor. Trent’s not there, which is fine, that’s footy. You can’t lock yourself to a coach for your whole career.”

Riolo insists there is no urgency.

“I’ll sit down with Burto at the end of the season and go through all the options,” Riolo said. “He’s played himself into a really good position but there’s nothing urgent at the moment.

“He’s just a good country kid who’s pretty laid back

“He’s debuted really well in Origin but he’s got a decider in a couple of weeks.”

BAHAHAHA Burtons all about the money. He left the Panthers for more coin and he's not about to regress, especially when his manager would be sending Matt naked selfies everyday with dollar sign captions.

Why would panthers get him back. The bloke is full of shit. IZACK TAGO is their new left centre and just resigned till the end of 2025. LUAI is their 5/8 and Burton won't be chosen over him. I don't get why he is saying they want him back. What other position will he play over there?

Buzz is living rent free in way too many Bulldogs fans heads.
Everyone knows that Buzz has copped a few too many blows to the head - likely caused by stumbling after sniffing petrol or drinking metho, and we all know he has the mental capacity of an ostrich, but my question isn’t about him, it’s about why people on this forum keep bringing up his opinion when it’s about as useful as a burnt out match stick.

He probably has one of those 1800 numbers..you know the ones they advertise at 2 o’clock in the morning.. Or maybe he’s on eharmony under Buy me a drink and I’m yours..

Burton won't be returning for less money to play centre. Not at all.

Plus of course Issac you know with your inside connection that Freddy once was a Panfer before he disowned them to become a latte sipping Yoga poof, so Burton is safe eh??…
Well you have to look at it this way. Which coach can mentor Burton into the best number 6 in the game and can have a massive influence on him being extended.
1. Flanagan
2.Fittler
3.Green
4. Ciraldo

They left the door open last year and he left anyway. Pretty sure he doesnt want to go back, probably on less money, to play centre.

Ciraldo is out of the picture (thankfully), Fittler isnt a fg coach. Flanagan then Green are choices if Potter doesnt work out. Im still watching Potter to see what our form is like rest of the year. You probably should have made Potter an option.

Rothfield is like a fart after a dodgy kebab.

You really want to let it rip (read his article), but aren't sure if you'll shit yourself (aka regret reading it immediately after stating).

Nobody nows his true age, infact it's entirely possible he's an ageless fossil for eras gone by. I suspect he is early to mid 60s, hence not at the age he's likely to kick the bucket anytime soon.

Lmao, what money does panthers have. They will have to pay $750 k to play burton in the centres. That’s more then Lua’s salary. Fucking stupid article. Burton will extend with the dogs. He one a premiership with panthers already and why would he get a low salary to play in the centres.
And he wants to play under Fittler who will be coaching the Bulldogs, which is locked in :-).
