Sexton to quit Bulldogs

Sexton's fate was sealed by his manager and has nothing to do with his form, as his form has been good

Gus came out and said Sexton's manager leaked BS news to the "media" about Sexton re-signing along with putting pressure on our club through the media

Obviously Sextons manager pissed off Gould, and with Gus' ego, Sexton was never going to be re-signed, not in a million years

Do you have a link where Gould came out & said this ?

I think that the coaching staff had something to do with holding off re signing Sexton. They were allowing him to test the water, and no team in Australia was interested. That sent a message that obviously backed up their own thoughts.

When Galvin announced he was leaving the Tigers, it gave them the opportunity to let Sexton step up, or step down.

fkin jason taylor, the bloke is an absolute fool with the kind of attack he dishes out.
The thing I’m struggling to understand with JT attacking plan is he encourages the long shifts in our own half (20-30m) where we play pretty carefree and offloading yet once we get into good ball area our line attacks become so putrid and conservative and predictable…we just burn through tackles in that set looking for one big play which usually is on the last tackle when we score (left edge block play, out the back)

*if we score cos more often than not we don’t which is why we are one of the worst teams in the league attacking the line

Since 1st November last year, Gus and Ciro its proven that both agreed they saw enough flaws in Toby's game to decide to hang off extending his contract with us. They worked on him with every bit of help offered in good faith to help him progress. Doubtful that many 7's have been given such genuine added coaching by all our coaches and Gus himself.

They have identified that the roster needs more attacking options to be a Finals competitive team now, and in the future.

Hardly surprising that young Galvin has struggled in the team at present with all that has been going on but Gus and Ciro have kinda staked their reputations on getting this guy and he will be given every opportunity at our club to succeed.

Even more weird is some of those shifts are not % plays and sometimes the passes are liable to be dropped or given to Tracey when he's in a worse situation with near on all the defensive line coming thru the centre of the field.

But yeah we risk that play down our end and only seem to provide one out attempted barge overs or similar which are easily defended on the oppositions line.

Surely JT has more trick plays …I recall last year one of those was Burton swinging over to the right and looking like would receive the ball out back but Sexton then rolls one through …I haven’t seen that this season …

Our halves need to learn how to read numbers better and throw long balls to unmarked wingers

Attacking options need to improve most definitely.

JT needs to look at video of Phins/Raiders etc. Their ability to easily transition into try scoring opportunities when they get a turnover is very good. We are cumbersome and have the run back into the defence to try and tire them attitude it seems. Not working tho.

There are so many areas where we can improve its scary good. I hope we eventually get to see a complete team performance showcasing both sides of the ball soon (and for 80 minutes).

Premiership if it happens.

Don't those counter-attacking game plans work better with a bit of speed in the outside backs?

Raiders and fins have a number of outside backs with great pace which allows them far more attacking options and ability to score from anywhere from a quick shift to create an overlap or when they break the line. Their halves are also far more creative.
We have to work far harder and back our structured plays to create scoring opportunities. Rely on players having the ability to backup line breaks and quick play the balls, shifts and resets to catch the defence out going backwards.
Don’t know what our stats would be on long range tries but would guess poor compared to raiders and fins.

Def the reason why we need more agility and speed.

Sexton has been ok BUT he is a very limited threat in attack - if he was anymore than a stop gap another nrl club would have signed him, titans would have kept him - dogs gave him a chance - hasnt gone to the next level. In attack the team has very little running threat at 7/9 - they can pass n exploit lazy/ slow defenders but are not constantly threatening the defence n causing hesitation/compressing the defence like J Hughes/Gant or Metcalf /Egan - as someone else here wrote "rip the band aid"

Ive gotta agree.

Its obvious Gus and Ciro want more from Toby. He's a lovable character and a great guy and team player but this team need something more.

Already discussed that we don't have speed.

Gronkos and Storm have this advantage as well.

Pennies to a lesser extent but they have Cleary and a very professional experienced roster and the best in the business executing our similar gameplan.

Reality is apart from replacing Xerri and Montoya for more speed, and acknowledging Burton is going no where and likely to see out his current contract (at least) our only other option is to get a creative 7.

Gus and Ciro know this and have made that happen.
How it pans out nobody knows but most of us are willing to give it a chance before signing into Buzz' poll to further humiliate Galvin at the very least :grinning:

Where they put him when all our troops are back will largely depend on him and how he fits in with what they want. Up to him.

With Mahony now going to the Cowboys, it looks like Hayward will become our 9.
Looks like some big changes next year.

They'll need another 9 as back up (at least) but they already know that.

I put up a video of the Phins guy others suggested. He is off contract and seems robust enough for us.

He didn't quit anything, bloke was off contract and signed elsewhere. Good on him and I hope he kills it over there, comes back and takes a team the gf !

They play a different style of game over there, and it may suit Sexton well. If it gives him the chance to grow and learn, he will come back better for it and possibly be offered a good deal from an NRL club.

Ironic, if he came back to us.

And I dont think just because reed and sex are not here next year it means he's not going to keep them in their position, now that would a fox sports article I agree with would outrageous! They'll retain their position the remainder of the season, we need a bench of sitilli, mann, hayes and galvin/haywood . And our starters king, dsf and Curran. After the first 25 of hard yakka we'll bring sitili & hayes for dsf & king and they would destroy the opposition defence. Then would also bring at around the same time mann for Curran. And it would be either Haywood or galvin in that jersey, either I'm fine with!
