Gus virtually put a neon sign on Galvins head telling the rest of the NRL, "This is the half you need to sign to win a comp" and while they where all looking at the pretty lights he signed the bloke we wanted fkn lol
This would only be true if Sexton is valued at X and Gus has signed him for 0.7 x X.

If he has signed him for market value, Gus has achieved nothing special.

Dont get me wrong, i dont mind Sexton.
I just dont think he can take us to a premiership and with no X - factors in our spine, i think its not a great direction by the club.

We really need 1 if not 2 topline players in the spine. Ideally FB amd one if the halves.

And please dont mention Burton....

I understand what you are saying but in reality there’s no 7s that will take us closer to a premiership than Toby. Before you say DCE if that’s the case where is Manlys recent premiership?

Hunt is ordinary and looks like he doesn’t even like playing Football.

Reynolds is held together by string and can be injured at any moment

Fogarty has barely ever made a finals series.

Please tell me the 7 we are going to pick up that’s better than a generational school boy talent who is 24 with 50 first grade games and one of the best short kicking games in the nrl

Then if you ind him how do you casually get him over for under 1.3m

⚪️TOBY SEXTON SET TO REJECT NRL RIVALS, RE-SIGN WITH CANTERBURY BULLDOGS ⚪
Via Telegraph Sport
By Peter Badel ✍️

Rejuvenated Canterbury halfback Toby Sexton will reject interest from two NRL rivals and ink a $1 million-plus extension in his burning desire to deliver a premiership to the Bulldogs.
This masthead can reveal Sexton’s management will meet with Bulldogs football boss Phil Gould for further talks on a new deal ahead of Thursday night’s Anzac blockbuster against the Broncos.

Canterbury coach Cameron Ciraldo says he has no plans to lose former Titans discard Sexton, who has mirrored his side’s epic renaissance by firing the unbeaten Dogs of War to the top of the league.

Ruthlessly discarded by the Titans, Sexton was thrown a lifeline by the Bulldogs midway through 2023 and he has flourished under the new regime of Ciraldo and Gould.
Sexton goes into the round 8 showdown at Suncorp Stadium off-contract at season’s end and there were fears for his future at Belmore after the Bulldogs were linked with boom Wests Tigers playmaker Lachlan Galvin.

But the Bulldogs plan to formalise a two or three-year extension for the 24-year-old, who has forged a handy scrumbase alliance with classy five-eighth Matt Burton.

Sexton’s manager Tas Bartlett confirmed Sexton is keen for another term at Belmore as the cool-headed halfback looks to break the Bulldogs’ 21-year premiership drought.
“We’ve got interest from a couple of clubs, but our priority is getting a deal done with the Bulldogs,” said Bartlett of PSM.

“He is loving it at the family club.
“The Bulldogs threw him a lifeline and he appreciates what the club has done for him.
“We’ve had plenty of positive talks and we’re working out what his correct value is.
“Phil Gould has been very honest and transparent and he doesn’t want to short-change Toby.

“I will catch up with Phil in the next week or so to thrash out an extension.”
Sexton was a junior sensation at Gold Coast school Palm Beach Currumbin and was so highly rated he once partnered Roosters whizkid Sam Walker in the halves for the Australian Schoolboys in 2019.

But after being identified as a franchise player at the Titans, the Gold Coast suddenly lost faith in Sexton, cutting him after just 24 games as an NRL shot-caller.
Plucked from the NRL scrapheap by the Bulldogs, Sexton initially had to bide his time in the NSW Cup, but played a handy role in Canterbury’s charge to the NRL finals last year before continuing his eye-catching form this season.

Sexton ran for 125 metres in Canterbury’s 20-0 rout of Newcastle in round five and is averaging 472 kicking metres per game, putting pressure on the opposition with his boot.
Ciraldo praised Sexton’s team-first mentality in the Bulldogs’ best start to a season in 87 years.

“Currently Toby is off-contract and he hasn’t once ever put himself before the team,” the Canterbury coach said.
“He’s been a really big character in the way we’ve turned around our culture and our connectivity.
“He’s played just over 50 games now, so he’s starting to feel more and more like he belongs in the NRL and I’m starting to see that in bits and pieces of his play.

“Toby’s got a really good energy around the group, he’s a really popular member of the team
“He’s always looking to get better and he’s coming in every day and works really hard with the coaches.
“’Gus’ (Gould) and his manager are in constant conversations (about a new deal), but Toby’s only job right now is to focus on getting better every week and my job is to help him do that.”
Bartlett is adamant Sexton has the composure and game management to steer the Bulldogs to their first title since 2004.

“Toby is a wonderful clubman,” he said.
“He went through some tough times at the Titans but he’s really enjoyed the change at the Dogs and he’s been patient in waiting for his opportunity.

“He will be a great retention for the Bulldogs. He is playing great football and he is only going to get better. He suits the way the Dogs play. He is tough, a real competitor and physical in defence, so he is everything they need at the moment.
“The team is connected, he feels connected and he wants to remain a Dog as long as he can.”
Reading this and it sounds like a deal is nowhere near from happening.

The manager is quoted as saying he'll reach out to Gus in nect week or so for some negotiations!

Anyone wanting DCE, Galvin or some other flashy signing isn't factoring in that those signings would disrupt the balance of the team and the salary cap and would mean we'd lose a few gun youngsters we have coming through.

Plus this squad has been built on no egos and a team first mentality, so signing one of the diva halves and the circus that comes with it was never happening.
I disagree with this.

Its not about about bringing young players through. Its about giving yourself the best shot at a premiership.

Once you've achieved that, your focus changes to keeping the squad together or keep the bleeding to as little as possible.

Unfortunately, you just HAVE to accept losing talent.

Penrith have shown how it can be done successfully. They earmarked 5 or 6 players that refused to let go, but bit the bullett and let go of many others.

It worked for them. May not work fir everyone.

But the point is, you have to win a premiership first before you need to look at value in juniors.

I personally think we are definitely 1 key halves player away from a premiership, but realistically also short a gun FB.

I think you dismiss the benefit of someones skill set like DCE too much

Well Penrith brought their spine through the junior grades. They purchased API so it’s certainly possible.

I don’t think DCE makes us into a much different premiership threat than Sexton.

If DCE is a messiah why aren’t Manly winning comps? Their squad on paper is far superior than ours.

Isn’t DCE off with like the whole playing group. Is that someone demanding recruitment.

Im saying that all the smoke and mirrors by Gus on pumping Galvin and DCE's tyres in order to secure Sexton is BS unless he has managed to sign Sexton on 70% of his market value.

If he's about to pay market value, he hasn't achieved anything with pumping those others guys value up.

Who is now assistant at the chooks. I seem to recall people in here being absolutely certain we should grab him, certain to take us to a premiership...

I'm surprised no other club has approached Holbrook for a first grade coaching gig

TBF he would have been way better than the flanges

How much do you think Sexton would get if he went to the current market?

My original post was in response to the smoke amd mirrors on Galvin and DCE, but im glad you understood it.

My point is im not upset at keeping Sexton. I personally think he's a better 7 than Burton is a 6 and has more chance of improving in his position.

But at the end of the day, he'll be a Chad Townsend..chad won a premiership at the Sharks but he couldn't win that premiership on his own. He didnt do anything exceptional for that win or for that finals run. I feel Sexton is the same.

He'll be OK if he had Galvin next to him and a topline FB. But if we have no intention of getting a top FB or replacing Burton at 5/8th, then i don't think Toby can get the team to deliver a premiership.

Even the Sharks 2016 team had x-factors in the spine.

Penrith bought Maloney who got them to a GF and then handed the reigns to Cleary-Luai who in turn won the 4 premierships.

DCE would do the same.

Manly has had a lop-sided SC spread across 3 or 4 players with one of them (Turbo) costing them dearly everytime with his injury problems. Their other issue was shit coaches like Barrett and Des.

If they have Turbo back and Olokoatu doesnt go missing again, theyll be premiership threats.

Its not easy to win a premiership. You need to hit your straps in finals and unfortunately for them, they haven't managed to do so.

That doesnt mean you put a red pen across a top half. Certainly dont do it when comparing him to someone who was a Titans reject....
