CANTERBURY Bulldogs senior team trainer Fred Ciraldo* has been given a 12-month good behaviour bond for assaulting his former wife — the latest controversy to hit the NRL team.
The 49-year-old was sentenced in Burwood Local Court yesterday after pleading guilty to common assault and stalking, intimidating and intending to harm his ex-wife in their Lakemba home.
Court documents revealed that, on the morning of November 24 last year, his former wife was making a cup of tea in the kitchen when he demanded she certify a document and said: “You’re going to the police station and you are going to get that paper signed or else.”
He then slammed the paper on the table and pushed her against the wall, cornering her.
He then picked up a timber chair and raised it above his head and yelled words to the effect of “f ... you, f ... you slut, f ... your family”.
Court papers said he put the chair down and picked up a boiling kettle and the pair continued to argue. He then left and later handed himself in to police and was charged.
At the time the pair were still living together while going through divorce proceedings but now no longer reside in the same home.
Magistrate Dominique Burns questioned his remorse after reading a psychiatric report, which stated he had said he “accidentally” bumped into his former wife during the altercation.
“I am wary of allowing you to leave this court without a conviction,” Ms Burns said.
The prosecution said it was hard to give him points for remorse and contrition but his lack of criminal history and his age worked in his favour for a good-behaviour bond.
Ciraldo, who has been with the Bulldogs for 17 years, was pressured to resign in 2012 after abusing the media outside Belmore Sports Ground during Mad Monday celebrations the day after the Bulldogs’ grand final loss to Melbourne Storm but ended up staying with the club.
Only days ago violent Bulldogs supporters were threatened with life bans after bottles were thrown at match officials following the team’s clash against South Sydney at ANZ Stadium. The NRL is continuing in its attempts to identify the Bulldogs fans who threw the bottles.
